Supply List Heirloom Sergery Hanger Cover www.portlandsewing.com [email protected] Supplies: Serger ¼ yd. taffeta 1¼ yd. narrow ribbon 2 yds. flat lace with one scalloped edge, 2¼ "- 3" wide ¼ yd. flat lace not scalloped 2" wide 1 spool 40 wt rayon thread (to coordinate with ribbon) 4 cones serger thread (to coordinate with fabric) Blue water-soluble marking pen Seam sealant Havel double-eyed needle (You can find all items at Portland Sewing.) Notes: -- Check to make sure the pattern fits the hanger you want to cover. -- Always sew from right side of fabric unless otherwise specified. -- You'll see tension settings below; check your machine's manual to see what they recommend. Back. Fold fabric in half, and cut in half. Use pattern to cut one hanger cover back on fold. Cut remaining fabric into a rectangle. Serge the following stitches, then cut the front. Attach lace and ribbon Stitch: Three thread flatlock narrow (right needle) Tension Settings: Needle-0, Upper Looper-3, Lower Looper-9; Babylock Stitch Selector: D Thread: Upper Looper-Rayon thread. Needle and Lower Lower-Serger thread Stitch Length: 2.5 Stitch Width: 4 Blade: Disengaged 1. Mark center of fabric piece for front with marking pen. 2. Center lace on right side. 3. Create a fold along edge of lace by folding fabric wrong sides together. SKBlair-Portland Sewing © May 2002 4. Serge. Guide fold next to edge of machine’s platform through all thicknesses from top to bottom. 5. Repeat on other side from top to bottom. Open and flatten. 6. Mark a line 1-1/2" from right edge of lace. 7. Fold fabric wrong sides together and place ribbon along folded edge. 8. Sew ribbon to fabric from top to bottom, open, and flatten. 9. Repeat to serge another piece of ribbon on other side of lace. Add pintucks Stitch: 3-Thread Narrow (right needle) Tension Settings: All on Neutral (typically 3-5). Babylock Stitch Selector: B Thread: Upper Looper-Rayon Thread. Needle and Lower Lower-Serger thread Stitch Length: 2.5 Stitch Width: 3.0 Blade: Disengaged 10. Mark a line 1½ " from ribbon. 11. To create pintucks, fold fabric wrong sides together. 12. Serge. 13. Serge two more pintucks ⅝" apart. 14. Repeat on other side. 15. Press pintucks to outside edge. 16. Using pattern included, cut out front. Fold fabric down middle of lace. Place fold of pattern on fold of fabric. Gather lace Stitch: 4-Thread (both needles) Tension Settings: All on Neutral (typically 3-5). Babylock Stitch Selector: A Thread: Serger thread Stitch Length: 4 Stitch Width: 7.5 Blade: Engaged Differential Feed: 1.3 17. Gather lace: Serge flat edge of lace, guiding it carefully. Put it all together Stitch settings and blade same as above except Stitch Length: 2.5 Thread: Serger thread 18. Place front and back right sides together and sew up one side seam. Serge around top edge. Don’t serge top edge closed! 19. With right sides together serge flat edge of gathered lace to bottom edge of hanger cover. Pull down and flatten so scallops hang down. 20. Serge remaining side seam together, starting at bottom of lace. 21. Secure threads with seam sealant or wrap start, flip finish technique or Havel double-eyed needle. 22. Use Havel double-eyed needle to weave remaining ribbon through threads around top edge of cover and tie in a bow. SKBlair-Portland Sewing © May 2002 .
