We present results from our high-resolution, high-contrast imaging campaign targeting the circumstellar environments of young, nearby stars of different masses. The observations have been conducted using the ALFA/CA 3.5m and NACO UT4/VLT adaptive optics systems. In order to enhance the contrast we applied the methods PSF-subtraction and polarimetric differential imaging (PDI). The observations of young stars yielded the identification of numerous new companion candidates, the most interesting one being rv 0.5" from FU Ori. We also obtained high-resolution near-infrared imaging of the circumstellar envelope of SU Aur and AB Aur. Our PDI of the TW Hya circumstellar disk traced back the disk emission as close as 0.1" ~ 6 AU from the star, the closest yet. Our results demonstrate the potential of the adaptive optics systems in achieving high-resolution and high-contrast imaging and thus in the study of circumstellar disks, envelopes and companions. 1. Introduction Young, nearby stars are our prime source of information to study the circum- stellar disk structure and evolution. They are also the ideal targets for adaptive optics (AO) observations, as they are usually bright enough to provide excellent wavefront reference. -

Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society Annual Report: 2008-2009 J. Todd Hoeksema, SPD Chair May, 2009 The Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society works to advance the study of the Sun and to promote the coordination of solar research with other branches of science. Our 550+ members span the full range of solar physics research. This year the Sun was extremely quiet. We witnessed the deepest solar minima in the last century with the greatest number of spotless days. Solar Cycle 23, just completed, lasted at least a year longer than average and much longer than recent cycles. Why remains a mystery. The discipline continues to be dynamic and productive with major progress in understanding the solar interior, the mechanisms of solar activity and variability, solar flares, the dynamic corona, and the heliosphere. The joint meeting of the SPD with the American Geophysical Union in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in May, 2008 was very well attended and featured a Union session celebrating the 50th anniversary of Gene Parkerʼs seminal paper describing the solar wind. In June, 2009 the SPD will meet independently in Boulder, CO. Members look forward to the launch of the Solar Dynamics Observatory, SDO, later in 2009. Welcome news came in late spring that ARRA 2009 stimulus package funds will allow construction to begin on the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST), a major research equipment and facilities construction (MREFC) project administered by the National Science Foundation. The SPD was led in 2008-2009 by J. Todd Hoeksema, chair, and a new vice- chair Shadia Habbal. -

Knowledge of galaxies beyond our own and the understanding that our universe is expanding were only about twenty years of age in the human consciousness. The planet Pluto was seventeen. Quasars, black holes, gravitational lenses, and detection of the Big Bang were still in the future--together with much of what constitutes our current un- derstanding of the solar system and the cosmos beyond it. In I993, forty- seven years after it was conceived in a forgotten milieu of thought, the Hubble Space Telescope is a reality. Today, the science of the Hubble attests to the forward momentum of astronomical exploration from ancient times. The qualities of motion and drive for knowledge it exemplifies are not fixed in an epoch or a generation: most of the astronomers using Hubble today were not born when the idea of it was first advanced, and many were in the early stages of their education when the glass for its mirror was cast, The commitments we make today to the future of the Hubble observatory will equip a new genera- tion of young men and women to explore the astro- nomical frontier at the start of the 2I st century. -

Full details are provided in the body of the report below, but it is worth highlighting several major milestones. These include: In October 2008, Prof. Neil Turok officially became Director of Perimeter Institute. Dr. Turok brings outstanding credentials both as a scientist and as a visionary leader, with the ability and ambition to position PI among the best theoretical physics research institutes in the world. Throughout the last year, Perimeter Institute‘s growing reputation and targeted recruitment activities led to an increased number of scientific visitors, and rapid growth of its research community. Biographical Memoir COPYRIGHT 1970 NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES WASHINGTON D.C. DIRK BROUWER September 1, 1902-January 31, 1966 BY G. M. CLEMENCE IRK BROUWER, who contributed more to dynamical astron- D omy than any other astronomer of his time, died on January 31, 1966, after a week in hospital; his death was occa- sioned by an acute disorder of the heart. He is survived by his widow and an only son, James. Brouwer was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on September 1, 1902, the son of a civil service employee. As a stu- dent in the University of Leiden he studied mathematics and astronomy, coming under the influence of Willem de Sitter, who in his own day was the dean of that branch of astronomy in which Brouwer was to do most of his work. Receiving the Ph.D. degree in 1927 under de Sitter, Brouwer came to the United States as a fellow of the International Education Board, spending a year at the University of California in Berkeley and at Yale University, where he was to remain the rest of his life. His initial appointment at Yale was in 1928 as research as- sistant to Ernest W. Brown, who was then the greatest living authority on the motion of the moon. -

These magnetograms portray the polarity and distribution of the magnetism in the solar photosphere. They were made with the Vacuum Tower Telescope of the National Solar Observatory at Kitt Peak from 8 January 1992, at a maximum in the sunspot cycle (lower left) to 25 July 1999, well into the next maximum (lower right). Each magnetogram shows opposite polarities as darker and brighter than average tint. When the Sun is most active, the number of sunspots is at a maximum, with large bipolar sunspots that are oriented in the east–west (left–right) direction within two parallel bands. At times of low activity (top middle), there are no large sunspots and tiny magnetic fields of different magnetic polarity can be observed all over the photosphere.
