American Council of Learned Societies Individual Giving Report, 2003-2004 September 30, 2004 Dear Friends, It is my great pleasure to share with you the list of individuals who have contributed to the ACLS in fiscal year 2004. Having just completed my first year as President, I could not be more mindful of the crucial role our fellowship program plays in supporting outstanding scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. I am deeply grateful to those of you whose names appear here for having recognized how crucial individual giving has become in sus- taining that mission. With your help we were able, in 2003-04, to make 79 awards from our core endowment for a total of over $2.6 million. You may, as I was, be interested to view the ACLS fellowship program from a longer historical perspective. Since 1957, almost $81 million in support has been awarded to approximately 7,200 individuals across the institutional spec- trum of American higher education. This is a record of which we are justly proud. Equally impressive has been the impact of those grants. Taking only one possible measure—prizes garnered by fellows whose work had been at least partially supported by the ACLS—we were delighted to see the numbers: 13 Pulitzers, 22 Bancrofts, and 14 National Book Awards, not to speak of the numerous awards given by our constituent societies. While we don’t presume to take full credit for the recognized accomplishments of these distinguished scholars, we are pleased that our program played an important part in what they have achieved. Our fellowship program will continue to support the very best scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. To that end our college and university Associates are making critically important annual contributions, and I’m espe- cially happy to report that a total of 31 leading research universities have now agreed to make a substantial supplementary commitment to our endowment. Foundations remain responsive to the significance of our mission as well. No one, however, appreciates the value of an ACLS fellowship more than the awardees themselves, and I’m delighted that the efforts of the Fellows’ Development Committee have been able to tap the generosity of that “alumni” community again this year. This committee of 17 distinguished ACLS fellows has raised over $81,000 in gifts from other awardees, and I thank them for their good work. For the many contributions from fellows and friends of the ACLS to the endowment we should all be deeply grateful. Since its inception this campaign has raised almost $1.25 million in spite of a recent downward trend, one that is both cause for concern and susceptible to many explanations. Whatever the reasons, however, I hope that with your help we’ll be able to reverse that course! Please accept my warmest thanks for your continuing support. Yours sincerely, Pauline Yu ACLS President 633 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017-6795 Tel: 212-697-1505 Fax: 212-949-8058 www.acls.org American Council of Learned Societies Individual Giving, 2003-2004 The ACLS gratefully acknowledges the contributions of the following donors who, along with foundations and the institutional Associates of the ACLS (primarily colleges and univer- sities, but also research libraries and other scholarly institutions), are helping to make possi- ble the reinvigoration of the ACLS Fellowship Program. This listing includes contributions to the John H. D’Arms Fund, restricted to support for the ACLS Fellowship Program and initiatives identified with John H. D’Arms’ leadership of the humanities. Also included are contributions to the ACLS/Oscar Handlin Fellowships in American History. This list reflects donations received from October 1, 2003 through September 30, 2004.
