This plan was prepared and will be implemented at no cost to Pennsylvania taxpayers. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is an independently-funded agency, relying on license sales, State Game Land timber, mineral, and oil/gas revenues, and federal excise taxes on sporting arms and ammunition. The Game Commission does not receive any state general fund money collected through taxes. For more than 115 years, sportsmen and women have funded game, non-game, and endangered species programs involving birds and mammals in Pennsylvania. Hunters and trappers continue to financially support all of Pennsylvania’s wildlife programs including beaver management. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Native Americans maintained a well-calculated balance between beaver populations and man for centuries. The importance of beavers to the livelihood and culture of native North Americans was paramount. When western civilization nearly wiped out beavers in Europe, then successfully proceeded to do the same in North America, the existence of beavers was seriously endangered across the continent. Native American respect for beavers was replaced by European greed over a 300-year period. Conservation-minded individuals and state agencies began beaver recovery efforts during the early 1900s. The return of beavers to most of North America was a miraculous wildlife management achievement. -

Spaulding Date Dean, Graduate School ii ABSTRACT The North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a highly mobile, generalist species with an extensive geographical distribution in North America. The porcupine was first documented in southwestern Texas in the early 20th century, but today occurs in most of the western two-thirds of the state. This species is relatively unstudied within the Great Plains ecoregion of North America, with no genetic studies having been conducted for this species in Texas. The objectives of this study were to describe population genetic metrics of porcupines across 3 ecoregions in western Texas by examining variation in 17 polymorphic microsatellites, and to confirm the applicability of the zinc finger protein sequencing method to identify sex in a population of North American porcupines. Tissue samples from 106 porcupines were collected from the High Plains, Rolling Plains, and Edwards Plateau ecoregions of western Texas. Sex was accurately identified for 92 porcupine tissue samples by directly sequencing a short portion (195 base pairs) of the zinc finger protein gene. Sixteen base pair substitutions between Zfx and Zfy chromosomes denoted the sex of individuals; heterozygous sequence for males (Zfx and Zfy), homozygous sequence for females (Zfx only). -

Among rodents, the phylogenetic position of the Published: 03 March 2017 beaver has always attracted special interest. The arrangement of the beaver’s masseter (jaw-closer) muscle once suggested a strong affinity to some sciurid rodents (e.g., squirrels), placing them in the Sciuromorpha suborder. Modern molecular data, however, suggested a closer relationship of beaver to the representatives of the mouse-related clade, but significant data from virtually homoplasy- free markers (for example retroposon insertions) for the exact position of the beaver have not been available. We derived a gross genome assembly from deposited genomic Illumina paired-end reads and extracted thousands of potential phylogenetically informative retroposon markers using the new bioinformatics coordinate extractor fastCOEX, enabling us to evaluate different hypotheses for the phylogenetic position of the beaver. Comparative results provided significant support for a clear relationship between beavers (Castoridae) and kangaroo rat-related species (Geomyoidea) (p < 0.0015, six markers, no conflicting data) within a significantly supported mouse-related clade (including Myodonta, Anomaluromorpha, and Castorimorpha) (p < 0.0015, six markers, no conflicting data). Most of an organism’s phylogenetic history is fossilized in their heritable genomic material. Using data from genome sequencing projects, particularly informative regions of this material can be extracted in sufficient num- bers to resolve the deepest history of speciation. -

North American Beaver (Castor Canadensis)
Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Wildlife Notebook Series No. 24 North American Beaver (Castor canadensis) Beaver are thought to have once numbered 60-400 million throughout North America before European settlement. Prior to 1825, explorers in Utah noted beaver in abundance throughout the state. Highly prized for their lustrous pelts, beaver populations were decimated by fur trapping during the 1700s and 1800s to supply a worldwide demand for warm and fashionable accessories. By the end of the decade they were considered rare and in Utah, their harvest was closed in 1899. Beaver have since recolonized a large portion of their former range, however loss of habitat due largely to competing land uses, has severely limited populations in many areas through- out Utah. DESCRIPTION Beaver are the largest rodents in North America. Their soft pelts range in color from nearly black, brown, reddish brown to blonde. Adults can grow to over four feet in length and up to 60 pounds or more in weight. They can live to be 20 years old. The most distinctive feature of beaver is their broad paddle-like tail, which they use like a rudder to navigate their watery environment and to balance upon as they stand on their hind legs gnawing on trees and various woody plants they harvest and use for food. While generally clumsy on land, beaver are incredibly grace- ful in the water, where they use their webbed rear feet to propel them and their tail to steer. This large tail is also used as a defense mechanism. When beaver are threatened, they will slap their tail on the surface of the water to alert family members of potential danger and to startle potential preda- tors such as bears, bobcats or otters. -

Beaver Castor Canadensis
Beaver Castor canadensis Other common names North American Beaver, Canadian Beaver Introduction The beaver (Castor canadensis) is New York’s official state mammal, and there happen to be a few family groups living in the Dyken Pond wetlands. Beavers are the second largest rodent in the world, only the capybara is larger, and they’re the largest rodent in North America. A semi- aquatic species, they spend time both on land and in the water. They’re also known as nature’s engineers and aquatic architects for their dam-building activities. Particularly industrious people are often described as being “busy as a beaver”. Physical Description and Anatomy Beavers are large, plump, aquatic rodents, with rounded ears. They are 40 – 52 inches (101.6 – 132 cm) long and anywhere from 22 – 75 lbs (10 – 34 kg). They have rich, dense fur, from yellow-brown to almost black. This made them a prime target for the fur trade when Europeans settled America. The fur is composed of two types of hair: long coarse outer hairs, and short fine inner hairs. This fur, combined with a thick layer of fat, provides insulation from cold temperatures. Their eyes have a second, transparent inner eyelid called a nictitating membrane that protects the eye while allowing them to see under water. Other adaptations to aquatic life include a valvular nose and ears that can be closed to keep out water, as well as flexible inner lips that close behind the large incisors, which allows them to carry sticks while swimming without swallowing water. They can make their fur water repellant using grease produced in their anal glands. -

North American Beaver Castor canadensis Often to people’s surprise, the Chicago River system is home to beavers. Their presence is a good sign of health for our improving waterway and an amazing sight to see, considering an adult beaver typically weighs 44 pounds and can be four feet long including its tail. The beaver is the largest rodent in North America and the second-largest in the world, after the South American capybara. This makes them one of the biggest mammals to be found in the Chicago River system. The beaver is semi-aquatic and is suited to life on land, although it prefers the water. It has a large, flat tail and webbed hind feet for swimming. Excellent swimmers, a beaver may remain submerged up to 15 minutes. Its eyes are covered by a third eyelid (called a nictitating membrane) which allows for underwater sight, and the nostrils and ears close when the animal is submerged. Beavers are nocturnal and are active mainly at night. The beaver’s fur is very warm, consisting of dual layers of long, thick outer hairs and short, soft inner hairs. The beaver waterproofs its fur in an oily substance produced by its own body. Beavers were very common throughout the region several hundred years ago. They were prized for their thick, warm fur, and by 1860, had all but disappeared from over-hunting. In 1950, the Cook County Forest Preserves began reintroducing beavers and, today, sightings are again common. “I’ve seen trees chewed, north and south of River City as well as along Bubbly Creek and near Diversey,” said Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River.
