    The Practice and Poetics of Fieldwork: Hugh Cott and the study of camouflage. Journal of Historical Geography Abstract This paper examines the practice and poetics of the British zoologist Hugh Cott’s fieldwork in order to explore the hybrid nature of developments in biological and military camouflage. Specifically focusing on two fieldtrips conducted in the 1920s to the Amazon and the Zambesi, and by examining how Cott communicated his scientific findings through photography and art this paper reveals that the performance of scientific knowledge production is spatially contingent; born of embodied, creative and demanding experiences and through multiple human and nonhuman engagements. Finally, it examines how this knowledge was transferred and utilised to develop mid-twentieth military camouflage. Thus, this paper considers how the craft and aesthetics of fieldwork shapes how nature is observed, recorded and communicated as scientific knowledge and military technology. Keywords: fieldwork, biography, camouflage, science, art, observation 1 Hugh Cott (1900-1987) was a British zoologist, dedicated to the study of adaptive coloration in nature (or camouflage); he was also a proficient wildlife photographer, gifted technical illustrator and influential Second World War camoufleur. The relationship between Cott’s scientific-self and these other diverse and seemingly discrete aspects of his character raises interesting questions surrounding the cultural nature of knowledge production and the performance of science. In particular, Cott’s combined use of the scientific and the aesthetic to communicate the uses of biology to the military is a useful means through which to narrate the history of camouflage as an entanglement of science, art and militarism.

    THE TIGER THE NEWSLETTER OF THE LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND BRANCH OF THE WESTERN FRONT ASSOCIATION ISSUE 40 - JANUARY 2015 EDITORIAL Welcome again, Ladies and Gentlemen, to the latest edition of “The Tiger”. 1915 was the first full calendar year of the Great War and as such was a year of many “firsts” as far as that conflict was concerned. It would be a year in which the theatres of War would multiply, with the campaign in Gallipoli commencing in the April and the beginning of the multitudinous battles along the Isonzo River between Italian and Aus- trian forces in the June. In October, Bulgaria joined the Central Powers and sent its troops into Serbia, with the Serbian Army retreating through Montenegro and Albania to reach the Adriatic Coast and evacuation to Corfu. Technology developed too. Underground mining was employed by all belligerents on the Western Front, whilst Poison Gas and Flamethrowers also joined an ever-growing ar- moury of weapons. At sea, unrestricted attacks commenced on merchant shipping by German submarines, whilst in the air, the first Victoria Cross was awarded to pilots of both the R.F.C. and the R.N.A.S. and the citizens of Britain came under aerial attack from German Zeppelins. The continued contribution of the Em- pire must not be forgotten either. Cana- dian troops, answering the call to arms shown opposite, first saw action at St Eloi, just south of Ypres in March 1915, whilst the involvement of Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli has passed into legend. As I write, a new ini- tiative to trace the descendants of those who fought on that inhospitable Penin- sula has been announced, and one can only hope the appeal is met with enthu- siasm.

    JULIAN TREVELYAN RA Julian Otto Trevelyan RA (20 February 1910 – 12 July 1988) An English Artist and Poet. EARLY LIFE Trevelyan was the only child to survive to adulthood of Robert Calverley Trevelyan and his wife Elizabeth van der Hoeven. His grandfather was the liberal politician Sir George Trevelyan, 2nd Baronet, and his uncle the historian George Macaulay Trevelyan; he is the great-uncle of his namesake, Julian Trevelyan the pianist. Julian Trevelyan was educated at Bedales School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read English Literature. ARTISTIC CAREER He moved to Paris to become an artist, enrolling at Atelier Dix-Sept, Stanley William Hayter's engraving school, where he learned etching. He worked alongside artists including Max Ernst, Oskar Kokoschka, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. In 1935, Trevelyan bought Durham Wharf, beside the River Thames in Hammersmith, London. This became his home and studio for the rest of his life and was a source of artistic inspiration to him. He became a confirmed Surrealist and exhibited at the International Surrealist Exhibition, held at the New Burlington Galleries in London. From 1950 to 1955, Trevelyan taught history of art and etching at the Chelsea School of Art. From 1955–63, Trevelyan worked at the Royal College of Art and became Head of the Etching Department. Because of his enthusiasm in his work and the desire to share it with others, Trevelyan became a highly influential teacher, with students including David Hockney, Ron Kitaj and Norman Ackroyd. He was an important leader of modern print techniques and today is regarded as a silent driving force behind the etching revolution of the 1960s.
