ABSTRACT The first part of this thesis offers a study of the phenomenon of fascination as it was understood in early modern England—specifically in its relation to magic, demonology and witchcraft. It examines fascination’s place within cultural traditions, and its operation within perception theory and the psychophysiology of the early modern medical understanding. It also examines some ways in which fascination operates within a theatrical context, and encounters the discourse of early modern “anti-theatricalists.” The second part of the thesis is an analysis of the Shakespearean tragic hero’s encounter with elements of fascinating bewitchment, and the problems of discerning reality through the mesmeric pull of misperception. The specific subjects of the dramatic analysis are Othello and Macbeth. KEN CLARKE - MY PROFESSIONAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY When I left junior school at the age of twelve my plastering career started at the well known building Arts & Craft Secondary School, ‘Christopher Wren’, and from this early age I was particularly interested in fibrous plastering. It was a known fact that, of a class of 16, two of the pupils, after four years of schooling, would start their training at a major film studio. I passed my GCE in Building Craft, Paintwork and Plasterwork (copy 1 attached) and was one of the lucky two to be chosen to start training at Shepperton Studios. This was my first achievement (copy 2 – letter of engagement, 9 June 1964, attached). I started Shepperton Studios in the plastering Dept on 22 June 1964 under conditions of a six-month probationary period and a further 4 and half years. During this five-year apprenticeship, I was to do through the block release system, eight weeks at work and two weeks at Art & Craft College ‘Lime Grove’. At the end of five years I was awarded my basic and final City and Guilds in plastering (basic June 1966 and final June 1968 – copies 3 and 4 attached). This was a big achievement for any young man – for me; it was the beginning of a big career. After my five years I was presented with one of the very last certificates of apprenticeship offered by the ‘Film Industry Training Apprenticeship Council’. Thus, my apprenticeship came to an end. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

Further reading Which edition if Shakespeare should I buy? This is not usually a problem as most often you will be told which par ticular edition of an individual play you should use. If you are free to choose your edition, you will obviously want to ensure that it is both reliable and as helpful as possible. The following series all have good notes, sound critical introductions, and are fully annotated: the Arden Shakespeare (a new, revised series will start appearing in 1995), the New Cambridge Shakespeare, the New O'fford Shakespeare (being published in paperback by World's Classics), and the New Penguin Shakespeare. In addition, you will find it useful to have a copy of Shakespeare's com plete works both for further reading and for reference. The standard Complete Works is that edited by Peter Alexander for Collins (we have taken our quotations from this); the Oxford edition of the Complete Works edited by Gary Taylor and Stanley Wells has many non-standard features; the Riverside Shakespeare (edited by G.B. Evans) has useful intro ductions to the plays. What critical books should I read? If you have read the play you have been set to study, but cannot see what it is about, what you need is a book that gives you an idea of the significance of the play. An introductory volume in this respect is Mar guerite Alexander's An Introduction to Shakespeare and his Contemporaries (1979). Similarly Philip Edwards's Shakespeare: A Writer's Progress (1986) will provide some starting-points, as will Richard Dutton's William Sha kespeare: A Literary Lifo (1989). -

Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative. -
