Lieber Title: House of Cards Advisor: Sheila Schroeder Degree Date: November 2013 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to approach adapting a comic book into a film in a unique way. With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. The screenplay, House of Cards, follows the original character of Miranda Greene as she attempts to understand insanity in Gotham’s most famous criminal, the Joker. The research for this project includes a detailed look at the comic book’s publication history, as well as previous film adaptations of Batman, and Batman in other relevant media.

  • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Scott Snyder | 304 pages | 12 Mar 2013 | DC Comics | 9781401232078 | English | United States Batman: The Black Mirror PDF Book It's difficult for books with as much acclaim as The Black Mirror to live up to the hype, and although I wouldn't say it was truly special, I still have plenty of praise to give. That is not to say that this is not a great work in itself. Having said that, Dick is a good Batman. All's I'm saying is that I've been thinking about what the DC reboot really means for all the long-running superheroes it affected last year. The secondary key character for the other half of the issues is Commissioner Jim Gordon. None of the characters were appealing. As if Gotham isn't full of enough darkness and sickness of the soul. One thing he does extremely well here is write colorful villains in the gangster-plus mode of the best Bat-villains, some of whom are familiar The Joker, Man-Bat and Killer Croc variants , but many of whom are new The Dealer of Mirror House, Roadrunner, Tiger Shark , and come up with scenarios to provide his artists with cool, fantastical, somewhat creepy and off imagery For example, the release of an aviary of exotic birds, filling the city scape with huge, strange birds that don't belong there; Tiger Shark, meanwhile, keeps orcas with him, and the body of one murder victim is found in the belly of a dead orca, found in the lobby of a bank.

  • Superheroes in Gotham,” the Exhibition of Comic Book New York… Gotham City… Metropolis… at the New-York
By James D. Balestrieri NEW YORK CITY — Disclosure: I still have my comic book collection, books from the early 1970s for the most part, from what is referred to as the Silver Age of Comics, silver calling to mind the silver bullets that plagued the Werewolf By Night, calling to mind the Silver Surfer, that most cerebral and cosmic of the superheroes, calling to mind the Fantastic Four and the silver temples of their leader, Reed Richards (mine are silver, too, though my ability to stretch, as opposed to his, seems to be on the wane). My children marvel at my Marvel Comics and Classics Illustrated — now bagged and boarded in acid-free Mylar. Batman (No.1, Spring 1940), Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Published by Detective Comics, Inc, New York. Serial and Government Publications Division, Library of Congress, Washington D.C. Full disclosure: you may well see, somewhere in this essay, a photo of attendees at the 2012 Comic Con in New York. I was there, with my family, and was in a kind of makeshift getup as the Shadow, that 1930s pulp hero — “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men…” — who was the inspiration for Batman. Deep disclosure: the brief bio that closes my writing in Antiques and The Arts Weekly alludes to the plays, screenplays and stories I write. It doesn’t mention the graphic novel I’ve been composing for the past three years. So I come at “Superheroes in Gotham,” the exhibition of comic book New York… Gotham City… Metropolis… at the New-York Ms.

William Uricchio The Batman’s Gotham City™: Story, Ideology, Performance The trademark affixed to Batman’s Gotham City™ suggests something of its special status. Plastered across games, amusement park rides, toys, and other collectables, Gotham City as brand is a highly valued asset not only of the Batman franchise, but of the larger corporate entities of DC Comics and Warner Bros. As a place marker and invocation of urban space, Gotham City’s protected legal status in fact extends to little more than a ten-letter sequence. It lacks borders, elected officials, citizens – none of which is surprising given its fictional status. But it does have a history and a raison d’être, and with them an accretion of representational strategies, icons, and of course, characters. This essay will side-step the value of Gotham City as intellectual property and generator of profits, looking at it instead as a generative element in the production of Batman narratives and related ideological value systems, both of which offer an opportunity to rethink urban cartographies as enacted rather than objective spaces. As the Riddler once put it, “When is a man a city?” “When it’s Batman or when it’s Gotham…. It’s huge and contradictory and dark and funny and threatening.” (Gaiman 1989) It is difficult to argue with this broad spectrum of descriptors. And yet the Riddler’s remarks regarding the mutual definition of the character and the city bring with them a crucial implication. 6 “I’ll Be Whatever Gotham Needs Me to Be” Batman, the Gothic and Popular Culture Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet Batman fi rst appeared in 1939, close on the heels of the recently created and hugely successful Superman. The young comic book industry, just emerg- ing as a separate medium from the newspaper comic strip, and hitherto mainly defi ned by men in suits, now demanded more visually appealing (i.e. costumed) characters. Batman was born as a darker and more com- plex variation on the red-caped superhero: he is Superman’s Gothic dou- ble.1 Although many superheroes were created in the 1940s and since then, Batman has remained the darkest and most problematic, not least because his powers come not from a magical source but from the brooding inten- sity of a childhood trauma. Over seventy years later, Batman has grown to become bigger than ever, eclipsing even Superman in recent decades. Why has this been the case? And how did this happen? In addressing these ques- tions, I want to suggest that the main reason for the success of Batman in the twenty-fi rst century—a multi-billion dollar Batman industry—has been Christopher Nolan’s return to the darker roots of the Batman story. Like any enduring Gothic fi gure, Batman’s regenerative cultural power depends on his ambivalence, his ethical complexity and moral ambiguity. On a formal level, this ambivalence plays itself out in the tension between Bat- man’s camp aesthetics and the Gothic characteristics of the fi gure; that is, between the campy smirk of the “Caped Crusader” and the furrowed brow of the brooding “Dark Knight.” Historically, whenever Batman is camped to its limit, the Gothic creeps in, returning the character to a darker and more complicated fi gure within the narrative.
