With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. The screenplay, House of Cards, follows the original character of Miranda Greene as she attempts to understand insanity in Gotham’s most famous criminal, the Joker. The research for this project includes a detailed look at the comic book’s publication history, as well as previous film adaptations of Batman, and Batman in other relevant media. -

“Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. Batman Year One Proprosal by Larry and Andy
BATMAN YEAR ONE PROPROSAL BY LARRY AND ANDY WACHOWSKI The scene is Gotham City, in the past. A party is going on and from it descends Thomas Wayne with his wife Martha, and son Bruce. They are talking, with Bruce chatting away about how he wants to see The Mark of Zorro again. Obviously they have just come from a movie premiere. As they turn a corner to their car, they are met by a hooded gunman who tries holding them up. There is a struggle and the Wayne parents are murdered in a bloodbath. Bruce is left there, when he is met by a police officer. There is a screech and a bat flies overhead... Twenty years have passed. Bruce is now twenty‐eight and quite dynamic. The main character has been travelling the world, training for a war on crime, to avenge his parents' deaths. He is at the Ludlow International Airport, where his butler Alfred picks him up. The two drive to Wayne Manor, just outside of Gotham. Bruce watches the city from the distance. The scene moves to downtown Gotham, where Bruce is wearing a hockey mask and black clothes. A fight breaks out between him and a pimp which leads to Bruce escaping to a rotting building. Bleeding badly, he doesn't know whether to continue his crusade against crime. A screech fills the area and a bat dives at him, knocking him onto an old chair. Bruce realises his destiny... The opening credits feature Bruce at Wayne Manor, slamming down a hammer on scrap metal, moulding it into shape. -

Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

TOWLE ________________________________________________________ Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, 2015 802 F.3d 1012 OPINION IKUTA, Circuit Judge: We are asked to decide whether defendant Mark Towle infringed DC Comics’ exclusive rights under a copyright when he built and sold replicas of the Batmobile, as it appeared in the 1966 television show Batman and the 1989 film BATMAN. Holy copyright law, Batman! I DC Comics (DC) is the publisher and copyright owner of comic books featuring the story of the world-famous character, Batman. Since his first comic book appearance in 1939, the Caped Crusader has protected Gotham City from villains with the help of his sidekick Robin the Boy Wonder, his utility belt, and of course, the Batmobile. Originally introduced in the Batman comic books in 1941, the Batmobile is a fictional, high-tech automobile that Batman employs as his primary mode of transportation. The Batmobile has varied in appearance over the years, but its name and key characteristics as Batman’s personal crime-fighting vehicle have remained consistent. Over the past eight decades, the comic books have continually depicted the Batmobile as possessing bat-like external features, ready to leap into action to assist Batman in his fight against Gotham’s most dangerous villains, and equipped with futuristic weaponry and technology that is “years ahead of anything else on wheels.” Since its creation in the comic books, the Batmobile has also been depicted in numerous television programs and motion pictures. Two of these depictions are relevant to this case: the 1966 television series Batman, starring Adam West, and the 1989 motion picture BATMAN, starring Michael Keaton. -

That is not to say that this is not a great work in itself. Having said that, Dick is a good Batman. All's I'm saying is that I've been thinking about what the DC reboot really means for all the long-running superheroes it affected last year. The secondary key character for the other half of the issues is Commissioner Jim Gordon. None of the characters were appealing. As if Gotham isn't full of enough darkness and sickness of the soul. One thing he does extremely well here is write colorful villains in the gangster-plus mode of the best Bat-villains, some of whom are familiar The Joker, Man-Bat and Killer Croc variants , but many of whom are new The Dealer of Mirror House, Roadrunner, Tiger Shark , and come up with scenarios to provide his artists with cool, fantastical, somewhat creepy and off imagery For example, the release of an aviary of exotic birds, filling the city scape with huge, strange birds that don't belong there; Tiger Shark, meanwhile, keeps orcas with him, and the body of one murder victim is found in the belly of a dead orca, found in the lobby of a bank. -

They enjoy both the set works and the wider listening. Composing in a cinematic genre also remains a popular avenue for many students, who enjoy crafting and creating music that tells a clear story. In this resource, I want to start by looking at some specific ways into film composition, so that students can create music that fits in with the set works. If students are going to truly understand a genre of music, they need to engage fully with it. Composing cinematic music is a great way for students to understand cinematic music – and that goes for all genres of music, in fact. Performance is also important, however: students should have the chance to play music from different genres – and there are some great arrangements out there for all abilities. If you can play something cinematic in your orchestra, wind band or brass band, it will really bring the music to life.
