It’s one of the most active, growing, and fruitful fellowships of churches on the planet. In North America, new Anglican congregations are popping up on a weekly basis. Many thousands of people are joining these churches. In the mid-twentieth century, the American version of the Anglican Church was a sleepy country club. Today, it’s part of an unexpected and amazing worldwide movement of God. I’m the pastor of a growing church, and our congregation is largely made up of people who were not raised in the Anglican tradition. As people become part of our church, they ind a beautiful and rich faith, but one that is unfamiliar to most of them. For years, visitors, newcomers, and members alike have asked me for a guidebook, but sadly, a practical and up-to-date introduction to living and worship- ping as an Anglican Christian did not exist. hat’s why I decided to write one. I grew up in the Anglican Church, I graduated from one of our seminaries, and I was ordained in 1998. I have been an active part of several Anglican churches, and have had contact with hundreds more. In 2004, I became the founding pastor of the congregation I still serve. xiii THE ANGLICAN WAY Most of my ministry has been with people who aren’t familiar with this tradition. hey may like this Anglican thing, but they don’t understand it. hey’re hungry to know more. Whether over cofee, at a conference, on the Internet, in a church sanctuary, or in a classroom, I’ve had thousands of hours of practice explaining the Anglican Way. Now I’m pleased to ofer that guidance to a larger audience. IS THIS BOOK FOR YOU? his book is for the person who has been visiting an Anglican church. You know you like it, but you don’t fully understand it. Maybe you haven’t been part of a church in a long time, or maybe this is your irst Christian experience, and you want to know what this whole thing is about. his book is for the Christian who is intrigued by the Anglican Way. Maybe you grew up in some other denomination and you want to know how to connect with this one. Maybe you are an Evangelical who wants to make sure we’re Bible-based.     BC c.5000 - Neolithic (new stone age) Period begins; first evidence of farming appears; stone axes, antler combs, pottery in common use. c.4000 - Construction of the "Sweet Track" (named for its discoverer, Ray Sweet) begun; many similar raised, wooden walkways were constructed at this time providing a way to traverse the low, boggy, swampy areas in the Somerset Levels, near Glastonbury; earliest-known camps or communities appear (ie. Hembury, Devon). c.3500-3000 - First appearance of long barrows and chambered tombs; at Hambledon Hill (Dorset), the primitive burial rite known as "corpse exposure" was practiced, wherein bodies were left in the open air to decompose or be consumed by animals and birds. c.3000-2500 - Castlerigg Stone Circle (Cumbria), one of Britain's earliest and most beautiful, begun; Pentre Ifan (Dyfed), a classic example of a chambered tomb, constructed; Bryn Celli Ddu (Anglesey), known as the "mound in the dark grove," begun, one of the finest examples of a "passage grave." c.2500 - Bronze Age begins; multi-chambered tombs in use (ie.     St. Jude’s Anglican Church Plaque Inventory Report Prepared by Brantford Heritage Committee Places of Worship Sub-Committee February 2019 Brantford Heritage Committee Places of Worship Sub-Committee St. Jude’s Anglican Church Plaque Inventory Executive Summary In November of 2018, the Places of Worship Sub-Committee of the Brantford Heritage Committee completed an inventory of the memorial plaques located in the interior of the former St. Jude’s Anglican Church. As the building had recently been sold for adaptive re-use as a condominium, there had been a request from the new owners of St. Jude’s Anglican Church, Andrew Neill Construction Inc. (ANC), to the Brantford Heritage Committee to provide direction as to how best conserve these historic features and elements of the church with heritage value. The plaque inventory comprised a form recording the location, size, material and date of each plaque. The transcriptions of each plaque were documented, and all were photographed. A total of 25 plaques and one commendation were recorded. The majority of the plaques were small engraved brass plates acknowledging the contributions of parish members towards the acquisition of elements of the church and towards the maintenance and restoration of the murals, organ and stain glass windows. A smaller number of plaques were primarily memorial records dedicated to members of the parish and comprising larger marble and cast bronze plaques. Three plaques, however, were deemed to have a broader community significance, with one recognizing Colonel Jasper Tough Gilkison (an early political figure in the Brantford community), and two plaques listing 37 citizens of Brantford who had lost their lives during World Wars I and II.

Now we go back to the continent of Europe and to England for this lesson. The prayer I will open with comes from the prayer book of the Church of England, from what is called “The Lesser Peace and Fast.” One of the celebration days on the church calendar of the Church of England has to do with a man whose name will come up in today’s lesson, Charles Simeon. On that particular day in the prayer book, this prayer relates to the life and testimony of Charles Simeon. So, as we begin this lesson, I would like for us to use this prayer, thanking the Lord for Simeon and other faithful ministers whom we will be talking about during this time. Let us pray. O loving Lord, we know that all things are ordered by Thine unswerving wisdom and unbounded love. Grant us in all things to see Thy hand, that following the example of Charles Simeon, we may walk with Christ with all simplicity and serve Thee with a quiet and contented mind through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and with the Holy Spirit—one God forever and ever. Amen. As we think about the history of Christianity in England in the nineteenth century, we begin, of course, with the Church of England, and we begin with the Broad Church. In one of Henry Fielding’s novels, he has a character who says this, “When I mention religion, I mean the Christian religion and not only the Christian religion but the Protestant religion and not only the Protestant religion but the Church of England.” And that was probably the attitude of many people who were members of the church in England in the nineteenth century, particularly members of what was called the Broad Church or adherents to the Broad Church philosophy.

    Vestments and Sacred Vessels used at Mass Amice (optional) This is a rectangular piece of cloth with two long ribbons attached to the top corners. The priest puts it over his shoulders, tucking it in around the neck to hide his cassock and collar. It is worn whenever the alb does not completely cover the ordinary clothing at the neck (GI 297). It is then tied around the waist. It symbolises a helmet of salvation and a sign of resistance against temptation. 11 Alb This long, white, vestment reaching to the ankles and is worn when celebrating Mass. Its name comes from the Latin ‘albus’ meaning ‘white.’ This garment symbolises purity of heart. Worn by priest, deacon and in many places by the altar servers. Cincture (optional) This is a long cord used for fastening some albs at the waist. It is worn over the alb by those who wear an alb. It is a symbol of chastity. It is usually white in colour. Stole A stole is a long cloth, often ornately decorated, of the same colour and style as the chasuble. A stole traditionally stands for the power of the priesthood and symbolises obedience. The priest wears it around the neck, letting it hang down the front. A deacon wears it over his right shoulder and fastened at his left side like a sash. Chasuble The chasuble is the sleeveless outer vestment, slipped over the head, hanging down from the shoulders and covering the stole and alb. It is the proper Mass vestment of the priest and its colour varies according to the feast.

Praise be to God, the Eternal that perisheth not, the Everlasting that declineth not, the Self- Subsisting that altereth not. He it is Who is transcendent in His sovereignty, Who is manifest through His signs, and is hidden through His mysteries. He it is at Whose bidding the standard of the Most Exalted Word hath been lifted up in the world of creation, and the banner of “He doeth whatsoever He willeth” raised amidst all peoples. He it is Who hath revealed His Cause for the guidance of His creatures, and sent down His verses to demonstrate His Proof and His Testimony, and embellished the preface of the Book of Man with the ornament of utterance through His saying: “The God of Mercy hath taught the Qur’án, hath created man, and taught him articulate speech.” No God is there but Him, the One, the Peerless, the Powerful, the Mighty, the Beneficent. The light that is shed from the heaven of bounty, and the benediction that shineth from the dawning-place of the will of God, the Lord of the Kingdom of Names, rest upon Him Who is the Supreme Mediator, the Most Exalted Pen, Him Whom God hath made the Dawning-Place of His most excellent names and the Dayspring of His most exalted attributes. Through Him the light of unity hath shone forth above the horizon of the world, and the law of oneness hath been revealed amidst the nations, who, with radiant faces, have turned towards the Supreme Horizon, and acknowledged that which the Tongue of Utterance hath spoken in the kingdom of His knowledge: “Earth and heaven, glory and dominion, are God’s, the Omnipotent, the Almighty, the Lord of grace abounding!” Give ear, O distinguished divine, unto the voice of this Wronged One.
