Research has been focused on: 1.Bioexploration of indigenous Palestinian plants – as a source of therapeutics and other bioactive constituents (identification of commercially valuable natural compounds derived from the flora of Palestine). This includes chemical composition, testing for enzymes (pancreatic lipase, alpha amylase, protease, cholinesterases, glucosidase) inhibitory, antimicrobial, antioxidant activities. 2. Ethnopharmacology and phytotherapy. 3. Biodiversity: Conservation assessments and red listing of the endemic Palestinian flora; Threatened flora; Genetic diversity of indigenous Palestinian flora; Fungi biodiversity; Geminiviruses biodiversity and molecular characterization, with emphasis on white-fly transmitted viruses; Medicinal plants used in TAPHM.

Improve Wheat Production under Climate Changes in the Middle East Region: The overall aim of this research program is to develop elite wheat cultivars with enhanced grain yield under the Middle East drought-prone environmental conditions. A multidisciplinary approach combining physiological and genetic characterization of drought and heat resistance in wild emmer wheat is being used and subsequently originating introgression of relevant alleles into elite Middle Eastern wheat cultivars. The specific objectives of this research are as follows: 1. Genetic dissection of genomic regions associated with drought and heat tolerance under diverse Middle East environments (The work also involves studies of QTL mapping, functional genomics and marker assisted selection of drought adaptive traits in wheat.) 2. Establish a core collection of elite wheat genotypes from the Middle East region for drought and heat tolerance under field conditions. 3. Introgression of selected wild emmer chromosomal segments responsible for drought and heat tolerance to modern wheat. 4. Characterization of drought and heat tolerance in the NILs and development of associated markers for further breeding efforts. 8. Environmental Biotechnology: a. Bio-fouling of membranes in MBR and RO units: mechanisms and control. b. Development of aromatic plant production systems tolerant to irrigation with treated effluents. This research program seeks to develop agro-industrial production systems of aromatic plants, suitable for the harsh conditions imposed by irrigation with local treated effluent water in the semi- arid and arid regions of Palestine. Towards this end, we have identified three specific objectives: 1. Identification of aromatic plants suitable for irrigation with treated effluents: In a three-year field study, to test the effects of treated effluents available, on growth and development of five aromatic crop plants. 2. Evaluation of the effect of the effluents on yield production: To quantify the effect of the effluents on quantity and quality of essential oil yield, and biomass production of the aromatic crops tested. 3. Optimization of agro-techniques for utilization of effluents for cultivation of aromatic plants. c. Constructed wetlands sustainable use for wastewater treatment and reuse in small communities. 9. New resources to control melon Fusarium wilt in the Middle East: This research program seeks to create novel genetic resources and generate tools and expertise for breeding Fusarium resistant melons, concentrating on the locally adapted landraces grown by small farmers. Specific Objectives: A. Collect Cucumis melo germplasm in Palestine (West Bank), focusing on local landraces. Organize the collection as part of the BERC Gene Bank. B. Characterize the collection using Next Generation Sequencing technology (Sequencing-Based Diversity Array Technology DArT Seq, and SNP markers), morphological and horticultural parameters, and screen the collection for Fusarium wilt resistance. C. Characterize novel sources of Fusarium resistance, to broaden and diversify the genetic basis of FOM- resistance breeding. D. Initiate a melon-landrace-breeding program, using a "farmer participatory approach". AN-NAJAH N. Biodiversity and protected areas conservation - practical outcomes:

BERC-Til Botanic Gardens including a community-based seed bank and a herbarium): The Biodiversity & Environmental Research Center (BERC) has established the BERC-Til Botanic Gardens (BERC-Til BGs) in 2003 (15,000 square meters) with the mission of contributing towards better management of the earth environment by increasing knowledge and understanding of plants on the basis that they constitute the foundation of life on earth. One of the gardens’ main purposes is to display the plants and also to establish genetic stores of these plants. The gardens and the existing BERC research facilities have formed a good basis for educational and research programs directed towards promotion of plant biodiversity conservation, environmental and plant conservation education, and horticulture Management program The management program of the BERC-Til BGs includes the following operational objectives: 1. The establishment of botanic gardens, as a national leader in the interpretation and teaching of systematic botany, conservation of a wide range of endangered and threatened wild plants and their habitats, biodiversity assessment and management, and herbarium and botanic gardens management.

2. The development and implementation of an educational and research program that would carry out applied research aiming at plant conservation using advanced technologies, and disseminate knowledge and understanding of the value and importance of plants to the public. 3. The production of basic and applied information on biodiversity and environmental resources and to manage and communicate this to all our stakeholders. 4. To assist actively in capacity-building biodiversity, environmental sciences, and related biotechnology. 5. To network effectively with leading universities, research centers, colleges, schools and other similar institutions to develop research and education in biodiversity and environmental sciences. 6. The implementation of a targeted educational and environmental awareness raising program for local schools, youth and decision makers. 7. The preparation of good practice guidelines for effective management of BERC-Til BGs based on international best practices and knowledge. 8. To provide a recreation site by making use of plants multipurpose uses including their effects on environmental health and aesthetic values. The BERC-Til BG is managed under a participatory approach by a Board of Trustees comprising 3 members of Til Village Council, 3 members from BERC, 2 members from the community, and 2 reserved for women. Technical, Scientific and educational aspects of the Gardens are solely the BERC’s responsibility. A small fee is now being collected from visitors, and being used for maintaining living plant collections and gardens services. BERC-Til BGs policy and procedures, and contribution to national CBD implementation: 1. BERC-Til BGs comprises more than 15 main units (gardens), in addition to a herbarium (1030 specimens representing 776 plant species) and seed bank (comprising 251 seed accessions of local landraces of cereal and vegetable crops, 30 accessions of of elite local landraces of wheat from Jordan, Palestine, and , 130 wheat RILs (a cross between wild emmer wheat, Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides Zavitan, and elite durum wheat cultivar, Triticum turgudum ssp. durum cultivar Svevo), and 474 seed accessions of four landraces (Green Baladi, White Baladi, Green Sahouri, and White Sahouri of snake melon, faqous, Cucumis melo subsp. melo var. flexuosus). 2. BERC-Til BGs maintain more than 225 species of indigenous plants (mainly trees and shrubs, and annual plants), some of which are considered very rare or threatened (Red list, 2002). 3. BERC-Til BGs maintain two field gene banks for local fig varieties (18) and local and international olive varieties (23), which can be used as resource for propagation, and research. 4. Botanic Gardens education and awareness. Traditional knowledge BERC collects and works with traditional knowledge, we therefore ensure that researchers are aware of and comply with relevant codes of practice and national and customary laws, and that research is carried out with the approval and involvement of local communities. When working with traditional knowledge in the public domain, we consider opportunities for acknowledgement of the original knowledge-holders, and benefit-sharing.

SELECTED FIELD PROJECTS EXECUTED 1. Biodiversity Field Studies: 1. Emergency Nature Protection Plan for the West Bank, Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Physical Planning and Institutional Building Project: Identification of Ecologically Significant Areas in connection with the Emergency Nature Protection Plan for the West Bank (1st. Of December 1995 - June 1996). The objectives of the project were to identify areas in the Nablus, Jenin and Tulkarem districts of the West Bank which are ecologically highly significant, ecologically moderately sensitive significant and areas which have no special ecological significance based on a set of criteria. The final outcome consisted of maps supported by a final written report including the criteria use for identifying the areas of ecological significance and the background information used for defining these criteria. 2. Planning and implementation of the BERC-Til Botanic Gardens (2001-2003), Til, Nablus. This project is aimed at conserving and protecting mainly threatened native shrubs and trees through the establishment of educational and research botanic gardens, which employ in situ and ex situ conservation strategies. The gardens comprise: native trees and shrubs, aquatic and wetland habitats, fig varieties including endangered and wild varieties, and an education and research unit. Donor: 3. Final Evaluation of Water and Sanitation Projects (Oct – Dec. 2002): Anabta and Dura Areas: funded by DFID (Department for International Development, Britain) and implemented by Save the Children (1999-2002). The project was aimed at improving access to potable water and at improving sanitation and environmental health in needy urban and rural communities in the northern and southern parts of the West Bank. In order to assess the outcome of the project and to evaluate to what extent Save the Children and its partners satisfied the objectives of the project, SC hired a consulting firm (MAALEM, Nablus) to perform such evaluation. My role in Maalem's consulting team was to evaluate the Health and Hygiene Education Program (HHEP) as a main component of the project. Each of the outputs has been studied, analyzed, and examined to what degree the anticipated output was achieved. The main goal of the HHEP as a major component of the water and sanitation project in Anabta and Dura areas was to improve basic hygiene practices by promoting key health behaviors related to sustainable and healthy use of water, sanitation, and solid waste services, with focus on women and children. The evaluation of the impacts of the HHEP, required assessing the outputs of the program; the relevance of messages developed for awareness purposes; the appropriateness and effectiveness of tools used to explore the health messages; the impact of the approaches utilized, such as the child-to-child activities; the impact and changes on communities’ health behavior; and the number, or percentage, of households affected by the program.
