Crambe: a North Dakotan Case Study
Crambe: A North Dakotan case study Sue Knights Joint Centre for Crop Innovation, The University of Melbourne, Horsham, Vic. 3401 www.jcci.unimelb.edu.au Email [email protected] Abstract Crambe (Crambe abyssinica), an industrial oilseed, has been successfully grown, processed and marketed on a commercial scale in North Dakota, USA, since 1990. A major reason for its success has been a multidisciplinary team involved in the research, development and commercialisation of the species through the auspices of the High Erucic Acid Development Effort (HEADE). Ecologically, crambe has offered a unique opportunity for farmers to diversify their crop rotations in North Dakota as it shares few pests with more commonly grown crops. It also shows tolerance to a wide range of insects and is produced using standard small grain equipment. However, crambe has one short fall; due to its low-test weight it is only economic to process it locally. In recent years, the production of crambe in North Dakota has fluctuated as the commercial players involved in the industry have changed. Its future will depend upon both the future of biorenewable resources together with innovative research to develop additional markets for the crop. This paper presents a brief case study of the development of the North Dakotan crambe industry. Key Words Crambe, oilseed, new crop, case study Introduction Hundreds of crops have been domesticated and cultivated by humankind during the history of agriculture, utilised for food, forage, fibre and medicine. However, only a small number provide the bulk of the raw material necessary for human survival. The limited diversity has increased the vulnerability of crops to adverse climatic conditions and fluctuating markets. -

Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus), a close relative of artichoke (Cynara scolymus, although some taxonomists have considered them just varieties of the species cardunculus and they will form hybrids), is a great addition to the garden for making a dramatic statement with its large, spiny, silvery foliage and sometimes for the globe- like, violet-topped fl owers. This sculptural plant received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It could be considered an ornamental edible as the blanched stems can be eaten, although doing so would ruin the appearance of the plant. Garden Mastery Tips March 2006 from Clark County Master Gardeners Flowering Quince Flowering quince is a group of three hardy, deciduous shrubs: Chaenomeles cathayensis, Chaenomeles japonica, and Chaenomeles speciosa. Native to eastern Asia, flowering quince is related to the orchard quince (Cydonia oblonga), which is grown for its edible fruit, and the Chinese quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis). Flowering quince is often referred to as Japanese quince (this name correctly refers only to C. japonica). Japonica is often used regardless of species, and flowering quince is still called Japonica by gardeners all over the world. The most commonly cultivated are the hybrid C. superba and C. speciosa, not C. japonica. Popular cultivars include ‘Texas Scarlet,’ a 3-foot-tall plant with red blooms; ‘Cameo,’ a double, pinkish shrub to five feet tall; and ‘Jet Trail,’ a white shrub to 3 feet tall. Flowering quince is hardy to USDA Zone 4 and is a popular ornamental shrub in both Europe and North America. It is grown primarily for its bright flowers, which may be red, pink, orange, or white. The flowers are 1 to 2 inches in diameter, with five petals, and bloom in late winter or early spring. The glossy dark green leaves appear soon after flowering and turn yellow or red in autumn. The edible quince fruit is yellowish-green with reddish blush and speckled with small dots. The fruit is 2 to 4 inches in diameter, fragrant, and ripens in fall. (I’m not sure if this applies for Eudicots; I’m listing them in the same order as APG II.) The first few plants are mostly primitive pond and aquarium plants. Next is Illicium (anise tree) from Austrobaileyales, then the magnoliids (Canellales thru Piperales), then monocots (Acorales through Zingiberales), and finally eudicots (Buxales through Dipsacales). This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Bench Grafting Fruit Trees
Bench grafting fruit trees Bench grafting is where you graft a piece of scion wood onto a rootstock to grow a new tree. It is carried out in late winter or early spring, using dormant scion wood from a tree of the variety you want to propagate. There are many different methods of bench grafting, but the whip and tongue is a good one with high success rates. Whip and tongue method The ‘whip and tongue’ graft is probably the most widely adopted method of bench grafting. It is best done with root and scion material of the same thickness as this maximises the chance of cambial contact all the way around. The cambial layer lies between wood on the inside and bark on the outside, and grafting is enabled by joining cambial layers in the scion and root through corresponding cuts joined end to end and then bound. The interlocking ‘tongues’ add structural support to the join as the cambial layers heal and fuse together, as well giving a larger surface area of cambial contact. This graft is best done in late winter or early spring and it is extremely important that the scion wood is dormant, with no signs of growth. It is well worth practicing this on some spare pieces of fruit scion beforehand so that you are confident with the cuts you are making. Be careful not to touch the cut surface of either your scion or rootstock, as oils from your skin can interfere with the healing of the graft.
