Augrabies Falls on the Orange River, rank among the world’s greatest waterfalls. The name Augrabies, which was given to the falls by the local Khoikhoi people, means hollow place, a place of great noise, and a rocky waterfall and accurately describes the falls. European explorers had called the falls King George’s Cataract, or Hercules Falls but the Khoikhoi name has stuck. Mokala is the newest of all the national parks and replaces the old Vaalbos National Park that was given back to the Sidney on Vaal land claimants. Mokala was offi cially opened on July 19, 2007 and currently covers 26 500 hectares. It has a variety of game but is primarily there for the protection of South Africa’s rare and endangered species – the Black rhino, tsessebe, White-backed vulture, Roan antelope, Sable antelope and disease-free buffalo. The park is a convenient stopover on the N1 route between Cape Town and the interior of the country. It is about 500 km north of Cape Town and about 1 000km south of Johannesburg. Being the largest ecosystem in South Africa, the Karoo is home to a fascinating diversity of life, all having adapted to survive in these harsh conditions.
