Postmedia publishes the National Post as well as local daily papers in towns and cities across Canada, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Montreal. Sun Media's principal English language assets are its online Canoe network as well paid circulation daily newspapers in towns and cities in Canada including Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton and London. As a result of the merger, there will be only one owner of daily paid circulation newspapers in a number of Canadian cities including Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa. Historically the Competition Bureau has been quite concerned about mergers in the newspaper business – taking the Southam case to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1997.[1] It has also historically taken the view that different types of media (print, online, broadcast, etc.) are not particularly close substitutes for one another. However, times change. In its background release with respect to the merger the Bureau noted a number of factors which lead to its decision not to challenge the transaction, including: 1. A lack of close rivalry between Postmedia's broadsheet newspaper and Sun Media's tabloid newspapers, including their different editorial focus. 2. Competition from free local daily newspapers. 3. The increasing competitive pressures from digital alternatives in an evolving media marketplace. 4. The ongoing incentive for the merged company to obtain readership and maintain editorial quality in order to continue to attract advertisers to its newspapers.

Her installation work has been shown around the world including: the Armoury Gallery, Olympic Site in Sydney Australia; Pearson International Airport, Toronto; South-on Sea, Liverpool and Manchester, UK; Universidad Nacional de Río Negro, Patagonia, Argentina; and Whitefish Lake, First Nations, Ontario. Mangaard has completed more then 16 films in more than a decade as an independent filmmaker. Her feature length experimental documentary on photographer Suzy Lake and the history of feminism screened as part of the INTRODUCING SUZY LAKE exhibition October 2014 through March 2015 at the Art Gallery of Ontario.     For immediate release Sun Media employees want union Toronto workers launch organizing drive to join Unifor TORONTO, March 24, 2015/Employees at Sun Media’s Toronto operations today launched a union organizing drive to deliver the benefits of collective bargaining to employees not already part of a union at the large media corporation. A letter announcing the union drive was delivered to Sun Media management this morning at their offices at 333 King. St. E., Toronto. The employees seek to form a union under Unifor, which currently represents Toronto Sun editorial and prepress workers. Unifor represents most of Canada’s unionized media workers. “In 2003, Toronto Sun editorial employees decided they wanted to unionize, and they’ve never looked back, bringing better wages, benefits and job security, among many other improvements,” said Paul Morse, president of Unifor Local 87-M. “Now, other non-unionized employees, who have been subjected to a prolonged wage freeze and a clawback in benefits, are coming to the same conclusion.” They are also concerned about a pending sale of the company to Postmedia Network Inc., Morse said. Unifor Local 87-M represents over 2,500 media workers across Ontario, including 13 Sun Media daily newspapers, the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, Ottawa Citizen, and Hamilton Spectator. The Canadian Media Guild is a union representing 6,000 media workers across Canada at CBC/Radio-Canada, TVO, TFO, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, ZoomerMedia and CW Television. We also represent employees at Reuters Canada and The Canadian Press. Our Canadian parent union, CWA Canada, also represents employees at Sun newspapers in Ontario. A significant proportion of our members work in news and current affairs. 2. The CMG supports new Canadian news ventures that are serious about producing quality editorial content and aim, among other things, to enrich our diverse country’s public debates, dialogue and decision-making. 3. We are pleased to provide our comments on the application by Quebecor for a new specialty all-news station, Sun TV News: • The CMG supports the application for a Category 2 licence, with conditions relating to the number of dedicated journalists and electronic newsgatherers Sun TV News must employ and to enhanced measures to deal with the real possibility of complaints about abusive content. • The CMG opposes the exceptional mandatory access requested in the application. • Given the questions the application raises about the definition of news and news balance, the CMG recommends that a policy hearing be held on these questions prior to granting the Category 2 licence.
