Annual Report 2018-19 The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. Ralph Waldo Emerson Photographs courtesy by: Jayati Saha, Saheli Das, Nilargha Chatterjee, Om Prakash Yadav and the staff of Iswar Sankalpa Annual Report 2018-19 SARBANI DAS ROY Dear friends, SECRETARY In the magical 12th year of its journey, I am happy to share the struggles and successes of the mind champions and Team Iswar Sankalpa through the difficult terrains of recovery-oriented programs of treatment, care and rehabilitation. The single most important thread running through all the pages of the year was the way in which we have broken the stony walls of social isolation and embraced our fellow citizens – doubly marginalised by homelessness and mental illness. For too long, have we looked away from this bundle of rags and dirt. For too long have we been afraid of her unpredictable behaviour. But it has taken this embrace to touch the pain in her and the human in me. The discovery of the deepest reservoirs of strength and ‘capacity’ of persons whom the world had held with increasing despair and the way in which we have succeeded in bringing delight to the care process have been ‘magical moments’ we have cherished over the year. Hope you will enjoy reading this testament of love and toil of a committed team of changemakers. • Inner-City and Outer-City Neighbourhoods in Kolkata: Their Changing Dynamics Post Liberalization
Article Environment and Urbanization ASIA Inner-city and Outer-city 6(2) 139–153 © 2015 National Institute Neighbourhoods in Kolkata: of Urban Affairs (NIUA) SAGE Publications Their Changing Dynamics sagepub.in/home.nav DOI: 10.1177/0975425315589157 Post Liberalization http://eua.sagepub.com Annapurna Shaw1 Abstract The central areas of the largest metropolitan cities in India are slowing down. Outer suburbs continue to grow but the inner city consisting of the oldest wards is stagnating and even losing population. This trend needs to be studied carefully as its implications are deep and far-reaching. The objective of this article is to focus on what is happening to the internal structure of the city post liberalization by highlighting the changing dynamics of inner-city and outer-city neighbourhoods in Kolkata. The second section provides a brief background to the metropolitan region of Kolkata and the city’s role within this region. Based on ward-level census data for the last 20 years, broad demographic changes under- gone by the city of Kolkata are examined in the third section. The drivers of growth and decline and their implications for livability are discussed in the fourth section. In the fifth section, field observations based on a few representative wards are presented. The sixth section concludes the article with policy recommendations. Keywords Inner city, outer city, growth, decline, neighbourhoods 1 Professor, Public Policy and Management Group, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, Kolkata, India.

  • Neighbourhood, City, Diaspora
Neighbourhood, City, Diaspora: Identity and belonging for Calcutta’s Anglo-Indian and Chinese communities Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD in Geography at the Department of Geography, Queen Mary, University of London Jayani Jeanne Bonnerjee 2010 ABSTRACT This thesis is located in the wider debates in postcolonial cultural geography on the city and diaspora. It engages with everyday lived spaces of Calcutta’s Anglo-Indian and Chinese communities through a focus on ideas of home, identity, belonging, cosmopolitanism and nostalgia. Drawing on overlapping narratives of these two communities in the city and in diaspora in London and Toronto, the thesis explores the idea of Calcutta as a ‘diaspora city’ and also the notion of a ‘Calcutta diaspora’. It explores the material and imaginative entanglements of migration and places narratives of identity and belonging for its Anglo-Indian and Chinese communities in the context of the city. Both Anglo-Indian and Chinese communities have been an integral part of Calcutta’s colonial and postcolonial histories, and although many members of both communities have migrated elsewhere in recent times, the city remains an important locus of emotional register. It is in this context that the thesis studies everyday lived spaces at different scales: in the neighbourhood, in the city and in diaspora. While the actual spaces are located/ rooted in real neighbourhoods and cities inhabited by the communities, the imagination of these spaces both in the city and in diaspora also intersect to create a more complex relationship between minority communities and cities. Methodologically, the thesis has adopted a multi-sited, qualitative approach to follow the lives of the communities across cities.

  • Are You a Resident of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)
PRESS NOTE Are you a resident of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)/ New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) area/Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, and an expectant 2nd dose COVID vaccinee, who has taken the 1st dose in a private hospital and are now anxious about how to get the 2nd dose, as there are no vaccines available with them for you? If yes, did you know that you may walk into any government health facility of the KMC, NKDA or BMC for getting your 2nd dose, free of cost? However, if your 2nd dose is overdue (>56 days from first dose of Covidshield or >42 days for Covaxin),then just walk into the facilities mentioned (list given). You shall be administered the second dose. For your greater convenience, the government has tagged each private hospital with a government health facility (please see list given) which you can walk into and get your 2nd dose. For example, if you have taken your 1st dose in AMRI Dhakuria, then you should ideally visit the government health facility which is tagged to AMRI Dhakuria i.e., KMC Urban Primary Health Centre - 87 for Covishield and KMC Urban Primary Health Centre - 90 for Covaxin. You can also visit any of the major Government hospitals given in the list for taking your 2ndvaccine dose in a similar walk-in manner, and get yourself vaccinated for free. For vaccination at the said government facilities, please carry one of your photo identification documents like Voter ID/Aadhaar/Passport/PAN Card etc. along with a proof of your first dose of vaccine received (i.e the SMS which you had received on receipt of first dose) The State Government is working to evolve a more precise and convenient information dissemination system for the benefit of all intending COVID vaccines.
