TERI “Natsumatsuri” Suzuki Method Summer Festival at Home 2020 TERI “Natsumatsuri” Suzuki Method Summer Festival at Home 2020 Due to the spread of COVID-19, TERI had no choice but to cancel the 69th Summer School. This is disappointing for everyone. Therefore, TERI decided to offer an opportunity to share a fun time with Suzuki families from all over the world by planning an online “Natsumatsuri” (Summer Festival) which will be held on the first weekend in August. "Natsumatsuri" will take place over two days, August 1st (Sat.) and 2nd (Sun.), with a variety of programs planned. This event will be streamed to the world from the TERI hall in Matsumoto, the birthplace of the Suzuki Method. In consideration of the risk of COVID- 19 infections, the number of people gathering in Matsumoto will be kept to a minimum. On the first day, a special video of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki and a lecture by the TERI President, Dr. Hayano, will be broadcasted. On the second day, we will have fun group lessons for each instrument with TERI Special Instructors followed by a live stream of their performances. As plans were being made for its centenary celebrations in 2011, a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck east Japan, challenging the nation with an unprecedented crisis. The orchestra’s centenary plans were scuttled, as an entire culture adjusted to a solemn new reality. A cherished dream of the Tokyo Philharmonic will finally come true, with a 100 th anniversary world tour that will encompass six countries on three continents. Internationally renowned Japanese conductor Eiji Oue will lead the orchestra for the tour. The first concert – Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 7:30 PM at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City – will mark the U.S. debut of the orchestra, as well as the third anniversary (to the day) of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Held every three years, the competition was established in 1997. In keeping with Mrs. Johansen’s wishes, the competition encourages younger musicians with significant prize awards at a time when they need it most – when they must make decisions about continuing with their dedication to music, or perhaps moving away from it as they look to college and other interests. Recalling a New York City gold medal she won when she was just 17 years old, Mrs. Johansen credited that experience with helping her decide to make music her life-long effort. By establishing the Johansen International Competition (JIC), she hoped to pass that encouragement on to new generations of string players. Mrs. Johansen expressed these sentiments during an interview about her decision to fund the competition and put it under the guidance of the FMMC Foundation.

    570748bk Beriot:570034bk Hasse 3/3/09 9:20 PM Page 4 Christine Sohn Christine Sohn has appeared in concert throughout much of the United States, including highly successful performances at venues from the Aspen Music Festival to Lincoln Center. She spent seven years based in London, and has also performed widely throughout Europe and Asia. As concertmaster, she led the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Photo: Nisha Kutty Colin Davis in its award-winning live concert recording of Berlioz’s Les Troyens and under Royal Opera House Music Director Antonio Charles-Auguste de Pappano led the London Symphony Orchestra on tour to Spain. She spent several seasons as guest leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bilbao Symphony ´ Orchestra in Spain, and at the invitation of Edo de Waart served as guest BERIOT concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. She also served as guest leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Sakari Oramo, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm. A Korean-American native of New York, Christine Sohn began playing the violin at the age of four and entered the Juilliard School four years later as a pupil Duos of Dorothy Delay, making her recital and concerto débuts that same year at Lincoln Center. She continued her university studies at Princeton University, studying political economy, followed by studies at the postgraduate level at the Royal College of Music in London. In New York again in 2005, she toured the United States and Asia as the first violinist of concertants the Vega Quartet, recipients of four prizes, including the International Critics’ Prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, and Coca Cola Visiting Artists in Residence at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
