CLAIR MMMAAARRRCCCHHH 222000111111 Introduction The Lake Erie Committee Forage Task Group report addresses progress made in 2010 on four charges: 1. Continue to describe the status and trends of forage fish and invertebrates in each basin of Lake Erie. 2. Continue the development of an experimental design to facilitate forage fish assessment and standardized interagency reporting. 3. Continue hydroacoustic assessment of the pelagic forage fish community in Lake Erie, incorporating new methods in survey design and analysis while following the GLFC’s Great Lakes Hydroacoustic Standard Operating Procedures where possible/feasible. 4. Continue the interagency lower-trophic food web monitoring program to produce annual indices of trophic conditions which will be included with the annual description of forage status. Most members of the Alloherpesviridae are detected in at least two different species, with and without clinical signs of a disease. In the current study the Koi herpesvirus (KHV) was used as a model member of the Alloherpesviridae and rainbow trout as a model salmonid host, which were infected with KHV by immersion. KHV was detected using direct methods (qPCR and semi-nested PCR) and indirect (enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay; ELISA, serum neutralization test; SNT). The non-koi herpesvirus disease (KHVD)-susceptible salmonid fish were demonstrated to transfer KHV to naïve carp at two different temperatures including a temperature most suitable for the salmonid (15°C) and cyprinid (20°C). -

SPORT FISH OF OHIO identification DIVISION OF WILDLIFE 1 With more than 40,000 miles of streams, 2.4 million acres of Lake Erie and inland water, and 450 miles of the Ohio River, Ohio supports a diverse and abundant fish fauna represented by more than 160 species. Ohio’s fishes come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and colors...and live in a variety of aquatic habitats from our largest lakes and rivers to the smallest ponds and creeks. Approximately one-third of these species can be found in this guide. This fish identification guide provides color illustrations to help anglers identify their catch, and useful tips to help catch more fish. We hope it will also increase your awareness of the diversity of fishes in Ohio. This book also gives information about the life history of 27 of Ohio’s commonly caught species, as well as information on selected threatened and endangered species. Color illustrations and names are also offered for 20 additional species, many of which are rarely caught by anglers, but are quite common throughout Ohio. Fishing is a favorite pastime of many Ohioans and one of the most enduring family traditions. A first fish or day shared on the water are memories that last a lifetime. Introduction This management strategy portrays the outcomes of an interactive workshop (2020 Invasive Catfish Workshop) held by the Invasive Catfish Workgroup at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Rice Rivers Center in Charles City, Virginia on January 29-30, 2020. The workshop convened a diverse group of stakeholders to share the current scientific understanding and priority issues associated with invasive catfishes in Chesapeake Bay. The perspectives shared and insights gained from the workshop were used to develop practical, synergistic recommendations that will improve management and mitigate impacts of these species across jurisdictions within the watershed. Blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) and flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) are native to the Ohio, Missouri, Mississippi, and Rio Grande river basins, and were introduced into the Virginia tributaries of Chesapeake Bay in the 1960s and 1970s to establish a recreational fishery. These non-native species have since spread, inhabiting nearly all major tributaries of the Bay watershed. Rapid range expansion and population growth, particularly of blue catfish, have led to increasing concerns about impacts on the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. 1 Chesapeake Bay Management Strategy Invasive Catfish Blue and flathead catfishes are long-lived species that can negatively impact native species in Chesapeake Bay through predation and resource competition. Blue catfish are generalist feeders that prey on a wide variety of species that are locally abundant, including those of economic importance and conservation concern, such as blue crabs, alosines, Atlantic menhaden, American eels, and bay anchovy. -

ECOSYSTEM BASED FISHERIES MANAGEMENT FOR CHESAPEAKE BAY Menhaden Species Team Background and Issue Briefs The Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) Project for Chesapeake Bay has been developed and coordinated by Maryland Sea Grant, working in partnership with the scientific community and the region’s state and federal agencies (the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Potomac River Fisheries Commission, Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, District of Columbia Department of the Environment, NOAA, and EPA). The EBFM Project targets five key species identified in the Ecosystem Planning for Chesapeake Bay document, including striped bass, menhaden, blue crab, alosines, and oysters. The goals of the EBFM project are to build a sustainable mechanism for addressing ecosystem issues for fisheries within Chesapeake Bay and to develop ecosystem tools for use in ecosystem-based fishery management plans for the five key species (or group of species in the case of alosines). Currently the project involves 85 scientists, managers, and stakeholders from within and beyond the Chesapeake Bay region. (June 2018). 1 Native Range and Status in the United States Native Range From Jennings (1988): “The bighead carp is endemic to eastern China, […] in the lowland rivers of the north China plain and South China, including the Huai (Huai Ho), Yangtze, Pearl, West (Si Kiang), Han Chiang and Min rivers (Herre 1934; Mori 1936; Chang 1966; Chunsheng et al. 1980).” Status in the United States From Nico et al. (2018): “This species has been recorded from within, or along the borders of, at least 18 states. There is evidence of reproducing populations in the middle and lower Mississippi and Missouri rivers and the species is apparently firmly established in the states of Illinois and Missouri (Burr et al. 1996; Pflieger 1997). Pflieger (1997) received first evidence of natural reproduction, capture of young 1 bighead carp, in Missouri in 1989. Burr and Warren (1993) reported on the taking of a postlarval fish in southern Illinois in 1992. Subsequently, Burr et al. (1996) noted that bighead carp appeared to be using the lower reaches of the Big Muddy, Cache, and Kaskaskia rivers in Illinois as spawning areas. Tucker et al. (1996) also found young-of-the-year in their 1992 and 1994 collections in the Mississippi River of Illinois and Missouri. Douglas et al. (1996) collected more than 1600 larvae of this genus from a backwater outlet of the Black River in Louisiana in 1994. -
Striped Bass
Can you tell the difference between a striped bass, a white bass and a striped bass hybrid? Anglers need to know the differences between these spe- cies because different sizes, seasons and creel limits apply to striped bass and striped bass hybrids, and to white bass. Knowing the differences between these species can also help you better understand Pennsylvania fishes and our wa- ters. These fish belong to the family Moronidae, temperate basses, also known as “true” basses. In Pennsylvania, this family also includes the white perch. Moronidae species are medium-sized to large-sized active predators and prized trophy and sport fishes. Some species live only in fresh water, while others are anadromous they spend much of their lives in salt water or brackish water but return to fresh water to spawn. Striped Bass Morone saxatilis Identification: The striped bass has a smoothly arched pro- file, slimmer and more streamlined than a striped bass hybrid, until it reaches a weight of five to 10 pounds, when its body becomes heavy-looking. The back is olive-green to steely blue- gray, sometimes almost black. The sides are silvery to pale rapidly and stay in brackish bays at the end of their downstream silvery-green, shading to white on the belly. There are seven float. Juveniles spend their first and second summers in the or eight distinct dark stripes that run laterally on the side of tidal Delaware River with most inhabitating that area from the the body. Striped bass have two dorsal fins, the front spiny- Schuylkill River downstream into the state of Delaware. -
Fish Species of Saskatchewan
Introduction From the shallow, nutrient -rich potholes of the prairies to the clear, cool rock -lined waters of our province’s north, Saskatchewan can boast over 50,000 fish-bearing bodies of water. Indeed, water accounts for about one-eighth, or 80,000 square kilometers, of this province’s total surface area. As numerous and varied as these waterbodies are, so too are the types of fish that inhabit them. In total, Saskatchewan is home to 67 different fish species from 16 separate taxonomic families. Of these 67, 58 are native to Saskatchewan while the remaining nine represent species that have either been introduced to our waters or have naturally extended their range into the province. Approximately one-third of the fish species found within Saskatchewan can be classed as sportfish. These are the fish commonly sought out by anglers and are the best known. The remaining two-thirds can be grouped as minnow or rough-fish species. The focus of this booklet is primarily on the sportfish of Saskatchewan, but it also includes information about several rough-fish species as well. Descriptions provide information regarding the appearance of particular fish as well as habitat preferences and spawning and feeding behaviours. The individual species range maps are subject to change due to natural range extensions and recessions or because of changes in fisheries management.
