From the Alumni Board... Fall 2010 Newsletter Dear Friends of Penn Ice Hockey: I hope you’ve had a relaxing summer and have spent plenty of time with family and friends. If you can believe it, fall is already here and the new Penn Hockey season is just around the corner. The Ice Hockey Board is now entering its third year, and I’m excited about how we plan to support the team this upcoming season. The Alumni Relations Committee, chaired by Whit Matthews C’02, already has plans in progress for our annual Homecoming game on October 30th. In addition, there are plans to host alumni gatherings in New York City on November 21st and in Boston on January 21st to coincide with two road trips the team has planned. The Mentoring Committee, chaired by John Rooney W’77, will continue building professional relationships between current student-athletes and alumni. If you wish to help with these efforts, we would like you to join the Penn Hockey Alumni Group that has been created on LinkedIn. We encourage all of our alumni to visit the Penn Athletics site and sign-up for PAMNet, a social networking site dedicated exclusively to Penn Athletics which will link both current and former athletes. The Development Committee, chaired by Craig White WEV’02, will look to further increase the financial support provided to the program. Our past fundraising efforts have helped to fund special projects such as renovating the team’s locker room at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink. This year we are focused on raising funds that will reduce player dues, secure prime practice ice-slots, and increase the stipend available to the coaching staff. I’d like to send my sincerest thanks to our past donors for helping with these fundraising efforts, even in this difficult economic climate. It should be noted that the Penn Ice Hockey Board includes alumni from the last four decades. Whether you were a former varsity or club player, we hope we can count on your support of the Penn Hockey team. We are constantly looking for additional support on the Board, so if you are interested in volunteering please let us know. Lastly, there are numerous “lost” alumni out there and we encourage you to send this information on to them and have them reconnect with Penn. Thank you for your continued and loyal support. On behalf of the other Board members, I wish all of our players and coaches the best of luck for a great 2010-2011 season. Sincerely, Ross Giambalvo EE’02 GEN’04 Penn Hockey Alumni Board Chairman From Associate Director of Structured Sport Mike Reno… Dear Penn Hockey Alumni, Family and Friends, The mission of Penn Recreation’s Structured Sport program is to enhance the student- athletes’ educational experience by fostering their personal development through teamwork and competition. Penn Hockey continues that tremendous tradition, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. Presently, the annual University allocation for each club does not fully cover the costs of operating clubs that aspire to the highest competitive levels. As a result, your donation has a sizeable impact, assisting our clubs in meeting their annual funding gaps. In short, it is not merely helpful to our teams, it is essential. In addition to your financial support, on behalf of the players and coaches, we thank you for your attendance at our competitions – it’s great to have our Penn Hockey family cheering on the teams from the stands! I’d like to thank the board members for their time and dedication, the coaches for their tireless commitment to their players, and on behalf of the entire Penn Recreation community, I extend to you our appreciation for your support of our continued growth and progress. Sincerely, Mike Reno From the Men’s Ice Hockey Club President... The Men’s team is entering a new era as we rebuild the team after graduating eleven players last season. While the number of players is short of our goal, we are confident going into the new season. We feel we have a strong, young core that will be very competitive this year and for years to come. The team will be playing in a new league this season, the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference. We will continue to play many of our old rivals from the MACHA, as well as compete for a championship in our new league. We are pleased that Princeton made the move to the GNCHC with us, and excited to play new league foes such as Rutgers, LaSalle, and C.W. Post. The team has a lot to look forward to this year, including the Alumni Game during Homecoming on October 30, and the 2nd Annual Alumni Event in New York City when we play NYU at Chelsea Piers, Manhattan on November 21. We are also extremely excited to be co- hosting with Princeton the Inaugural ACHA Ivy League Tournament at the end of this season. All of the players are looking forward to a huge success.
