  • Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001
Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001. Preface This bibliography attempts to list all substantial autobiographies, biographies, festschrifts and obituaries of prominent oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and other scientists who worked in the marine environment published in journals and books after 1922, the publication date of Herdman’s Founders of Oceanography. The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Annotations will also indicate if the citation includes a list of the scientist’s papers, if there is a relationship between the author of the citation and the scientist, or if the citation is written for a particular audience. This bibliography of biographies of scientists of the sea is based on Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre’s bibliography of biographies first published annually beginning with issue 4 of the History of Oceanography Newsletter (September 1992). It was supplemented by a bibliography maintained by Eric L. Mills and citations in the biographical files of the Archives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD.

ABSTRACT Thomaz de Mello Breyner was born in Lisbon in 1866, the son of Francisco de Mello Breyner, 2nd Count of Mafra. Acting as family physician at the court of Dom Carlos I of Portugal, Breyner gave a interesting first-hand account of the last years of Portuguese monarchy, interwoven with records of his clinical labor and domestic life.

Recollection of the Historical Portuguese Orchid Collection from 1879. International Journal of Science, Technology and Society. Vol. 7, No. 4, 2019, pp. 56-60. doi: 10.11648/j.ijsts.20190704.11 Received : June 27, 2019; Accepted : August 29, 2019; Published : September 12, 2019 Abstract: A new orchid house was built before 1879 in Portugal (Ajuda, Lisboa) for the orchid collection of the King Luis I of Portugal. That house was designed using the best technical solutions of that time. The orchid collection of 438 different orchids, almost all of which were natural species was clearly larger than most collections in botanic gardens in Europe and other non tropical areas then and today. After the Lisbon Regicide, the murder of King Carlos I of Portugal, the follower of King Luis I, the Botanic Garden of Ajuda including the orchid collection was transferred from The Royal administration to the University of agriculture and the collection started to decline and disappeared completely. A private family (Tuulikki and Pekka Ranta), who transported their collection of about 10000 orchids from Finland to Portugal (2011) has decided and promised to recollect that historical orchid collection in such a way, that the collection can be visited and studied a reasonable long time in the future.

I remember my grandmother sitting with me in the latter after Alice's birth and saying: "I detest this room." • Higher, Stronger and Better
Nº3 | Oct 2019/Mar 2020 CASCAIS OFFICIAL VISITOR’S MAGAZINE SPORT IN Higher, Stronger and Better SECRET IN HOUSE IN LIVING IN Yakuza by Olivier Casa de Santa Maria António Félix da Costa An explosion of flavours A National Heritage with open doors More than a driving passion Welcome to Cascais! And welcome to What’s In nº 3! After the first two issues, we are now more than convinced that this has been an effective and dig- nified way of getting in touch with those who visit us. This maga- zine is a gift for those who choose to visit us, and it’s free for you to take with you, read and share with future visitors. For this third edition we would like to invite you to visit Casa de Santa Maria – Santa Maria House. It’s an icon of this historic village, along with the Santa Marta Lighthouse. The architect of Casa de Santa Maria was Raul Lino, who is very well known in Cascais. History is something that we also value. One cannot predict the fu- ture without studying the past. So, we’ve also prepared an article for this issue about the origins of Cascais, to give you an idea of the lives and actions of two of the Portuguese kings that have statues facing the Cascais bay. You will be inspired by the stories of the Portuguese kings D. Pedro I and D. Carlos I. One of the privileges of living in Cascais is that you can live in the same place were others spend their holidays.
