Biographical Information A California State Assemblyman for the 17th District from 1949-1967, William Byron Rumford was a steely pioneer who struggled against the obstacles that would bar him and other people of color from succeeding and attaining parity. A proponent of fair housing and employment legislation, Rumford equally concentrated his efforts on curbing youth unemployment and working towards a higher minimum wage. A pharmacist by training and profession (he owned and ran Rumford’s Pharmacy in Berkeley), he also focused on a number of health issues including the effects of air pollution and tuberculosis. Scope and Content of Collection Documenting the life and political career of the first African American elected to public office in Northern California, the William Byron Rumford papers are a great resource not only for local Berkeley and California political history, but moreover for the information they provide on the tenor and shift of attitudes towards race at the tail end of the 1950s and early 1960s. The collection also ably documents Rumford’s controversial and contested Senate campaign and the numerous bills he worked on while in office. Additional highlights include materials on the Negro Political Action Association of California (NPAAC) and a small collection of broadsides, pamphlets and newsletters from white supremacists groups in California. In tandem with other documents on civil rights, these materials provide a multi-faceted snapshot of the racial climate in the U.S. mid-century. carton 1, folder Series 1: Fair Housing, undated, 1950-1967 1-18, carton 2, folder 1-15 carton 2, folder Series 2: Fair Employment, undated, 1949-1964 16-22, carton 3, folder 1-17 carton 3, folder Series 3: Civil Rights, undated, 1934-1969 18-19, oversize-folder 1, folder 1-13 Series 4: Legislation, undated, 1950-1969 carton 4, folder 14 AB 2495, Relating to State Archives and Records Management, 1951-1955 Finding Aid to the William Byron BANC MSS 73/112 c 3 Rumford papers, 1934-1982 Series 4:Legislation, undated, 1950-1969 carton 4, folder AB 91, 1955-1959 15-17, carton 5, folder 1-4 carton 5, folder 5 AB 812, Regarding Temporary Housing Projects, 1959 carton 5, folder 6 AB 2031, Alcoholic Beverages, 1959 carton 5, folder 7 AB 60, Sales Tax and Use Tax Exemption, 1961 carton 5, folder 8 AB 315, Fair Trade, Liquor, 1961 carton 5, folder 9 AB 682, Minimum Wage Law, 1961 carton 5, folder 10 AB 683, Minimum Wage Law, 1961 carton 5, folder 11 AB 684, Minimum Wage Law, 1961 carton 5, folder 12 AB 702, School Patrols, 1961 carton 5, folder 13 AB 1548, Coordination of Radiation and Atomic Energy Activities, 1961 carton 5, folder 14 AB 2088, Reimburse for Tuberculosis Sanatoria, 1961 carton 5, folder 15 AB 2092, Compensation County Employees, 1961 carton 5, folder 16 AB 2162, Youth Employment Program, 1955-1962 carton 5, folder 17 AB 2418, Aid to Aged, 1961 carton 5, folder 18 AB 2547, Sick Leave, Classified School Employees, 1961 carton 5, folder 19 AB 2548, Alcoholic Beverages, 1961 carton 5, folder 20 AB 2560, S.F.
