RAHIM SAMSUDIN1 AND WAN ZUHAIRI WANYAACOB1 1School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences Faculty Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia 43600 Bangi, Selangor 2Department of Environmental Science Faculty Science and Environmental Study Univerisiti Putra Malaysia The Semenyih Granite is located in Mukim Semenyih, Hulu Langat. It was tectonically emplaced during the Late Mesozoic period. This granite intrudes Jelebu Schist in the northeast and Kajang Formation in the southwest. The mineral composition of the Semenyih Granite consists of 60-70% potash feldspar; 15-20% quartz; 5-15% plagioclase (oligoclase); 5-10% mica and 5% accessory minerals. The Semenyih Granite is divided into the Semenyih and Beroga Granites. Beroga Granite has medium to coarse grain texture and dark grey in color while Semenyih Granite has fme to medium grain texture and pale grey to light brown in color. The second texture formation due to tectonic events such as rotation of the crystal lattice, slip and rearrangement at grain boundaries, micro fractures and faults and fluid-filled micro fracture was observed under microstructure study. The microscopic evidence of deformation is compared with the macroscopic phenomenon of the Semenyih Granite. The northeastern area rock is characterized by cataclasites, strike -slip faults and highly fracture zones. It may be due to deformation after cooling or due to latest emplacement of this granite body, but the impact was lesser in the southwestern area. Field observations that the Semenyih Granite is highly weathered and severely eroded with landslides and rock falls occurrence locally, especially from Semenyih town to Sg.

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management is one of the most challenging issues faced by most developing countries. Knowledge of solid waste generation and composition is necessary for accurate decision-making in terms of engineering design, planning and forecasting for the management strategy of urban waste. The objective of this study was to determine MSW generation and composition in an urban area of Balakong City, Selangor, Malaysia. The application of a linear model on solid waste forecasting was also performed in this study. A survey of household residents in eight housing areas in Balakong was carried out for one month from January to February 2011. Data were collected on a daily basis. In total, organic waste was the highest composition (5,344 kg, 68.6%) among the solid waste generated in all eight housing areas. Plastic and paper comprised of 10.4% (811 kg) and 9.5% (736 kg) of the solid waste generated. The least composition was glass (270 kg, 3.5%) and metals (204 kg, 2.5%).

However, it took almost 10 years before they developed into one of the major pests of rice in the country. Since then, they have spread to almost all the rice areas in Malaysia. Since their detection, continuous control, containment and eradication programmes and research activities have been conducted by various government agricultural agencies involved in rice production. The efforts have been successful in reducing crop damage by the snails but have failed to arrest their dispersal to new areas. Since 2002, the snails have infested almost 20,000 ha of rice growing areas (2008 data) and have threatened the livelihoods of farmers. In 2010, costs associated with apple snail damage were estimated as RM 82 million (US $28 million).

The average consumption per capita in 1998 was 3.74 tonnes of aggregates. It is estimated that the current rock reserve in this area can only cope with the demands of this region for the next 30 years. Thus, the exploitation of aggregate resources must be planned carefully and integrated with other types of landuse. This occurred during a rescue operation for a teenager who is feared to have drowned after falling into a mining pond on Wednesday (Oct 3). The divers were caught in a strong “whirlpool” during the operation in Puchong, a town on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. It was drizzling when the divers went into the pond at 2115 hours to rescue the 17- year-old boy. The team had followed standard operating procedures in donning complete diving equipment and were tied to a single rope. The divers struggled in the water for about 30 minutes while other fire rescue members tried to rescue them. All of them were unconscious when they were eventually pulled out of the water.
