Quisiera apoyar y encomendar los esfuerzos del Primer Festival Internacional de Cine Budista de la Ciudad de México, ya que presenta una serie de películas y conferencias que resaltan la relevancia de la filosofía budista para el mundo presente. Uno puede ver claramente el papel de la estética en la diseminación y entendimiento de las enseñanzas budistas tanto en la música tradicional como en las artes visuales. Esos métodos fueron alentados desde los días de los grandes maestros de Nalanda y Tíbet. Hoy la tecnología nos ha permitido crear nuevas herramientas para el aprendizaje y para compartir ideas. Los medios electrónicos han emergido como los nuevos métodos de comunicación entre las masas, una simple imagen o sonido puede evocar sentimientos profundos de intimidad que compartimos como raza humana. Quiero felicitar al IBFF, a la Fundación Prajnopaya, la Fundación Samaya, Garuda y a todos los organizadores en México por emprender la maravillosa tarea de construir puentes entre culturas a través del cine y conferencias. Que todas sus aspiraciones para crear una Cultura de Paz sean alcanzadas. Jung El Primer Festival de Cine Budista de la Ciudad de México pretende ofrecer a nuestra sociedad una ventana hacia una manera distinta de mirar la vida y ser un punto de encuentro entre la ciencia, las antiguas tradiciones y el público. Este festival nos brinda una oportunidad de discusión y contacto con maestros de la India, tibetanos, y científicos que nos dan soluciones reales y prácticas eficaces para enfrentar nuestra vida cotidiana y vivir de una manera más plena y gozosa la realidad. Conoceremos la riqueza multicultural de diversas naciones a través de películas, conferencias y exposiciones de primer orden. Películas sorpresivas, divertidas y a veces provocadoras, que nos permitirán reflexionar sobre nuestra manera de mirar, de ser y de existir. Penetraremos en mundos lejanos y desconocidos de magia y belleza o en crudas realidades presentadas desde la visión de realizadores y maestros, en busca del entendimiento y armonía entre los seres humanos. Y lo más importante: la búsqueda de nuestra plenitud y la comprensión de nosotros mismos y de cómo construimos nuestra realidad. Este festival pretende erguir un puente entre el conocimiento científico y una antigua tradición que se basa en la observación de nuestra mente. I had been to America once with him before, in 1981. By my next visit 14 years later in 1995, many people among our American sangha were already saying, “Let’s search for land.” That year and in 1997 I was mainly giving small teachings at private residences, like the home of Brigid Ryan’s sister Micki and her husband Geary Coats in Carmel. While I was there, we started looking through real estate ads, and went to check out a few places in the area of Big Sur. The problem was, the places we went to look at were so expensive—one was by the ocean, and its buildings even had copper roofs. Another place was actually at Lama Tsultrim Sangpo on the Sangha House deck, Summer 2007 a hot springs. Not only were they very pricy, they were also difficult to get to. So then we went back to the researching. Eventually, Scott and Onju Updegrave took charge of the search, looking every place they could: every real estate ad and bulletin board notice they saw.     The Life of Chokgyur Lingpa as told by Orgyen Tobgyal Rinpoche translated by Tulku Jigmey Khyentse and Erik Pema Kunsang Rangjung Yeshe Publications The Life of Chokgyur Lingpa A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY The Dharma was first introduced to Tibet by King Lha Totori then further established during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo. Later, King Trisong Deutsen benefited Tibet greatly by inviting many great masters such as Guru Rinpoche, Vimalamitra, and others so that the Dharma became very widespread. Trisong Deutsen had three sons. The second, Lhasey Lotsawa, also known as Murub Tsenpo, was later reborn thirteen times as a tertön. The great tertön Terchen Chokgyur Lingpa was the last of these incarnations. Chokgyur Lingpa was born in Nangchen, a province of Kham in eastern Tibet. His family name was Kyasu. His father was called Pema Wangchuk and his mother Tsering Yangtso. Born in the year of the Ox, auspicious signs must have occurred at the time of his birth, but there is nothing clearly stated about such occurances. His first name, given by his parents, was Norbu Tendzin. As a boy, he herded the cattle. One day at a place named Manika he met a lama in the form of an Indian mendicant (atsara) who asked him what his name was. “My name is Norbu Tendzin,” he answered. “What is this place called?” “Manika,” he said. “What is the name of this valley?” “It is called Arya Nang,” he answered. “That is very auspicious,” the Indian mendicant declared, “You will become quite well- known in this world.” The mendicant was Guru Rinpoche.

This transmission is realized through a relevant training or initiation. The holy text has an absolute value, while its further hermeneutic development in the way of interpretations and comments is a priori viewed as secondary, complementary and commenting. The cinema art is a kind of modern, interpretative commentary of Buddhism. Through the audio-visual media the religious transmissions have been delivered, transformed and incorporated in new forms, utilizing the semiotic power of the cinema language. The proposed paper examines three very different films which articulate various views of Tibetan Buddhism, its sacral continuum, symbolism, and being on the screen. In these case studies the interpretation of religious narrative is determinate as a process of gradual transformation.
