In this synthesis, using 25 littorinid snails as a case study, we show how thermoregulatory behaviours may 26 buffer changes in environmental temperatures. These behaviours include either a 27 flight response, to escape the most extreme conditions and utilize warmer or cooler 28 environments; or a fight response, where individuals modify their own environments 29 to minimize thermal extremes. A conceptual model, generated from studies of 30 littorinid snails, shows that various flight and fight thermoregulatory behaviours may 31 allow an individual to widen its thermal safety margin (TSM) under warming or 32 cooling environmental conditions and hence increase species’ resilience to climate 33 change. -

EFFECTS AND CONTROL OF BARNACLE INFESTATION ON MANGROVE SEEDLINGS IN A MANGROVE REHABILITATION SITE TAN YEE SIANG FACULTY OF SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA KUALA LUMPUR MALAYSIA 2013 EFFECTS AND CONTROL OF BARNACLE INFESTATION ON MANGROVE SEEDLINGS IN A MANGROVE REHABILITATION SITE TAN YEE SIANG DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES FACULTY OF SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA KUALA LUMPUR MALAYSIA 2013 ABSTRACT A study on the development, effects and control of biofouling on replanted mangrove seedlings (40-50cm height) was carried out, from April 2008 to July 2010, at Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani and Kampung Sungai Limau, Selangor, Malaysia. The dominant biofoulers were barnacles (Amphibalanus amphitrite), which were the main causal organism of mangrove seedling damage or death. The high density (>100 no./ 10 cm section of plant stem) and cover (>30 %) of barnacles appeared to obstruct development of new leaves, shoots and roots, as well as imposing weight loads as high as six times the weight of the seedlings. The 10-20cm section of the stem above ground had the highest number of barnacles (mean = 125±106; p<0.05). However, growth and survival of seedlings with low percentage cover (<30%) of barnacles and other fouling organisms were not affected over the 20 weeks of study; these were seedlings planted on higher ground (2.0-2.5m above chart datum). Histological study showed that the percentage thickness of the palisade layer of fouled leaves was significantly (p<0.05) lower compared to non-fouled leaves, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the number of abaxial hairs. -

ZooKeys 261: 1–13. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.261.4197 Abstract This dataset records the occurrence and inventory of molluscan fauna on Gueishan Island, the only active volcanic island in Taiwan, based on the literature survey and field investigation conducted between 2011 and 2012. The literature review involved seven studies published from 1934 to 2003, which collectively reported 112 species from 61 genera and 37 families of Mollusca on Gueishan Island. Through our field investigation, we identified 34 species from 28 genera and 23 families. Fourteen of these species were new records on Gueishan Island: Liolophura japonica, Lottia luchuana, Nerita costata, Nerita rumphii, Diplom- matina suganikeiensis, Littoraria undulata, Solenomphala taiwanensis, Assiminea sp., Siphonaria laciniosa, Laevapex nipponica, Carychium hachijoensis, Succinea erythrophana, Zaptyx crassilamellata, and Allopeas pyrgula. -

Y. Low Abstract. An annotated checklist of the Mollusca from the Australian Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) of Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is presented. The checklist combines data from all previous studies and new material collected during the recent Christmas Island Expeditions organised by the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (formerly the Raffles Museum of Biodiversty Resarch), Singapore. The checklist provides an overview of the diversity of the malacofauna occurring in the Cocos (Keeling) / Christmas Island ecoregion. A total of 1,178 species representing 165 families are documented, with 760 (in 130 families) and 757 (in 126 families) species recorded from Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, respectively. Forty-five species (or 3.8%) of these species are endemic to the Australian IOT. Fifty-seven molluscan records for this ecoregion are herein published for the first time. We also briefly discuss historical patterns of discovery and endemism in the malacofauna of the Australian IOT. Key words. Moluska itu luasnya sekitar 3,24 juta hektar dan pada yang diantaranya adalah Gastropoda dan tahun 1993 tinggal tersisa 3 juta hektar. Bivalvia merupakan salah satu filum dari (Setyawan, Susilowati dan Sutarno, 2002: 6).
