The Cooking of Umbria with Mary Ann Esposito 05-16 October 2022 The Cooking of Umbria with Mary Ann Esposito 05-16 October 2022 About this Tour Known as the Green Heart of Italy, the extraordinary region of Umbria is rich with fascinating ancient hill towns, lush countryside, silver-green olive groves and vineyards. Home of Saint Francis of Assisi, Umbria has an almost mystical serenity, with a storied tradition of artists and craftsmen. Famous for black truffles, superb olive oil, and outstanding meats, the genuine regional cuisine is regarded as one of the best in Italy. What better way to discover the delicious cooking of Umbria than with Mary Ann Esposito, host of the longest running cooking show on public television, Ciao Italia, now entering its thirty-first season. Mary Ann will travel with the group throughout the entire tour and conduct two hands-on cooking lessons in which she'll help you to prepare her favorite Umbrian recipes. Her husband, certified wine educator Guy Esposito, will also provide an ongoing course on the wines of Umbria as we travel through the region. We'll spend five nights in the countryside near Montefalco, our base for exploring beautiful Umbrian cities like Spoleto, Foligno, Bevagna and Spello, hunting for black truffles, lunch at a privately-owned castle, and winetastings at a local winery. Then it’s on to elegant Perugia, the regional capital, where our four-night stay will include a visit to the famous Perugina chocolate factory, a daytrip to mystical Assisi, an excursion to the medieval town of Gubbio, and a stop in Deruta, famous for its ceramics. So don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to travel, cook with and get to know Mary Ann as we explore the wonders of Umbria! Mary Ann is the author of twelve best-selling cookbooks and has appeared nationally on NBC, the Food Network, FOX, the Discovery Channel, and numerous commercial and public television stations across the country. She has been featured in many national publications and metropolitan newspapers, and she has appeared beside chefs Julia Childs, Todd English, Daisy Martinez, Sara Moulton, Jacques Pepin, Martin Yan, and countless others. By order of the Italian president, Mary Ann has received the prestigious Star of Italy award (“Stella d’Italia”) from the Italian government for outstanding contribution to the promotion of the Italian culture abroad. The meticulously decorated rooms have Carrara marble bathrooms, Wi-Fi internet access, and king size beds. Common areas are furnished with a unique collection of antiques, and include a fireplace room, a library, an Art Nouveau bar, and a large veranda overlooking the park. • Visual Experience in Angela of Foligno's Memoriale
Shouting at the Angels: Visual Experience in Angela of Foligno’s Memoriale 1 Gritar a los ángeles: Experiencia visual en el Memoriale de Ángela de Foligno Pablo GARCÍA -ACOSTA 2 Abstract : This article is part of the scholarly revival in Angela of Foligno (c. 1248-c. 1308) studies in relation to images. With the exhibition entitled Dal visibile all’indicibile. Crocifissi ed esperienza mistica in Angela da Foligno (Foligno, October 6th, 2012 – January 6th, 2013) and the publication of the catalogue, relations between Angela’s visions and her artistic context have been examined in greater depth. However, despite the excellent essays included in the book, there is still lacking a theoretical basis to explain Angela's devotional relationship with some images and, in particular, her reception of them. The main aim of these pages is therefore to develop that theoretical background and to interpret from such a basis the events that occurred in Assisi in front of the so-called “vetrata degli angeli” (the stained glass window of the angels). 1 This article forms part of a larger research project partly funded by the Bibliotheca Mystica et Philosophica Alois M. Haas Research Group (2009SGR1551, granted by the “Departament d’Economía i Conexeiment de la Generalitat de Cataluya”), which allowed me to undertake a research trip to Assisi to work with the manuscript traditionally known as A (Assisi Codex, Biblioteca Comunale 342), which contains the most reliable version of Angela’s writings. I want to thank all the members of the group for their personal support, particularly Dr. Victoria Cirlot, who introduced me to Angela so many years ago, and Dr.

  • The Historical Record in the Scaglia Limestone at Gubbio: Magnetic Reversals and the Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction
Sedimentology (2009) 56, 137Ð148 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-3091.2008.01010.x The historical record in the Scaglia limestone at Gubbio: magnetic reversals and the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction WALTER ALVAREZ Department of Earth and Planetary Science, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-4767, USA (E-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT The Scaglia limestone in the Umbria-Marche Apennines, well-exposed in the Gubbio area, offered an unusual opportunity to stratigraphers. It is a deep- water limestone carrying an unparalleled historical record of the Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene, undisturbed by erosional gaps. The Scaglia is a pelagic sediment largely composed of calcareous plankton (calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera), the best available tool for dating and long-distance correlation. In the 1970s it was recognized that these pelagic limestones carry a record of the reversals of the magnetic field. Abundant planktonic foraminifera made it possible to date the reversals from 80 to 50 Ma, and subsequent studies of related pelagic limestones allowed the micropalaeontological calibration of more than 100 Myr of geomagnetic polarity stratigraphy, from ca 137 to ca 23 Ma. Some parts of the section also contain datable volcanic ash layers, allowing numerical age calibration of the reversal and micropalaeontological time scales. The reversal sequence determined from the Italian pelagic limestones was used to date the marine magnetic anomaly sequence, thus putting ages on the reconstructed maps of continental positions since the breakup of Pangaea. The Gubbio Scaglia also contains an apparently continuous record across the CretaceousÐTertiary boundary, which was thought in the 1970s to be marked everywhere in the world by a hiatus.

Artists’ Books Program 2018 ARTISTS’ BOOKS RESIDENCY SESSION A PROJECT BY MAHLER & LEWITT STUDIOS GUEST CURATED BY JO MELVIN IN COLLABORATION WITH VIAINDUSTRIAE (INBOOK OUTBOOK IFBOOK PROGRAM) RESIDENCY SESSION: 3 / 30 SEPTEMBER SYMPOSIUM: 26 / 28 SEPTEMBER PUBLIC PROGRAM: 29 / 30 SEPTEMBER EXHIBITIONS, TALKS, SCREENINGS, PERFORMANCES, BOOKS The Artists’ Books residency session, symposium and related public program at the Mahler & Le- Witt Studios stems from interactions with a unique artists’ books collection, owned by Primo De Don- no, and the connected Viaindustriae Archive in Foligno. The project is organised by the Mahler & LeWitt Studios and guest curator Dr Jo Melvin (Reader in Archives and Special Collections at Chelsea College of Arts, UAL, London), in collab- oration with Viaindustriae, Foligno. De Donno’s extensive collection of artists’ books begins with Italian Futurism and includes Fortunato Depero’s 1927 masterwork Depero Futurista. As well as books, Primo has contextualised his collection with related artworks, design objects, furniture and ephemera, creating a unique cultural map which facilitates research and teaching. The participants in the residency session – artists, curators, writers, publishers and designers – have spent time exploring the collection, as well as the cultural heritage of Spoleto. They present their research and works-in-progress as part of a pro- gram of events, exhibitions and performances in the concluding symposium and public program. In the final week the residents are joined by a dozen other participants who, having been introduced to Spoleto and the collections, will give presentations on their own related research and participate in events. In the spirit of the Mahler & LeWitt Stu- dios program, the sessions in the final week are intended to be open, discursive and research-led, providing an opportunity for participants to share work with peers and to receive feedback in an en- gaging and critical environment.

The total specific activity due to the presence of K, Th and 238U in the environment is given in Bq/kg. Natural radioactivity was 30 30 characterized by means of gamma spectroscopy measurements performed by 20 adopting complementary survey methodologies, namely rock and soil San Giustino sampling, together with airborne gamma ray surveys. Referring to the Geological Database provided by the Geological Regional Service and based 50 on a 1:10000 scale survey, the 214 Cartographic Units (CUs) were divided into two groups: Deposits sensu lato (s.l.), comprising the 118 CUs corresponding i 2 0 3 20 0 Vasch to quaternary deposits and loose geological formations, and Rocks s.l., 30 20 consisting of 96 CUs of rocky geological formations. The Rocks s.l. group (50% 20 of the regional surface) was investigated via a rock sampling campaign (one 2 0 50 2 Città di Castello sample per 15 km ).
