Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni The Welsh 8 Baccalaureate

The Welsh Baccalaureate qualification has become an integral part of our pupils‟

curriculum. Our students will study the diploma at the level most appropriate to their learning. Our aim is that every student leaves Cwm Rhymni with at least one of the

levels of the Welsh Baccalaureate, the highest level being the equivalent to an A Grade at A Level.

The Welsh Baccalaureate recognises our pupils‟ ability in a variety of curriculum

areas. They study an exciting and relevant module on , Europe and the World which broadens their knowledge of political, economic, cultural and social issues in

today‟s society. Important current affairs are addressed through an extensive

Personal and Social Education programme. As part of the Welsh Baccalaureate,

all pupils will learn a new foreign language, successfully complete work experience, voluntary work and an enterprise initiative. Our pupils also prove their competency

in all of the essential and key Skills, before being awarded the Welsh Baccalaureate diploma.

Many guest speakers are invited to Welsh Baccalaureate

lessons, as well as pupils being able to

participate in field trips both locally and

nationally. The school has taken every

opportunity to introduce this exciting new qualification in a lively and relevant way, which

allows every opportunity to educate our pupils

to become inquisitive and independent learners.

Bullying

Bullying assumes a variety of different forms, including physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying, and spreading malicious rumours. The teaching staff are aware of these various forms of bullying. They are sensitive to the problem during lesson times, in between lesson times and at the end of the school day.

The teaching staff will respond to signs that there may be something wrong with the individual pupil – a deterioration in the standard of work, illness that is not accounted for, a general sense of disaffection, untidy books or physical injury such as bruising.

The teaching staff will listen and respond seriously to any complaint made by a student. The teaching staff will also try to ensure the physical safety of the pupil. Any incident reported will be noted and the Form Tutor or the appropriate Head of Year will be alerted to the problem. Both the Form Tutor and the pupil will be asked to describe the incident or complaint.

11

The relevant pupil/s will be reminded of the seriousness of the complaint or alleged incident. All parties involved will be told that a written record will be kept. Efforts will be made to secure reconciliation. The “bully” concerned will be reminded of the pain that their action has caused. Appropriate sanctions will be utilised. The situation will continue to be monitored on a daily basis and a thorough follow-up procedure will be adhered to. If the bullying continues the school will contact the parents or guardians. In serious cases parents or guardians will be asked to come to the school to discuss the matter. Suspension is possible if the situation requires it and if the bullying has been proved to be true.

Monitoring Progress

We will be reporting back on every pupil's progress frequently during the academic year. In October and February we will be distributing the results of the monitoring progress , as well as an interim report in December for the content to be discussed in the parents evening. At the end of the academic year each pupil will receive a detailed and personal report from each subject studied.

Discipline

The essence of discipline is to know oneself and to discipline that self. The school strives to foster self discipline in all aspects of school life by nurturing respect for oneself, for others and for academic, moral and social standards, both in lessons and on the games field and in other activities. Whilst there is a written code of conduct, we believe that teaching and learning by example can be more effective. When the need for punishment does arise, we look for an appropriate and constructive form of punishment.

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni 18 School policies The Welsh Language

We are a unique school, as we are the only Welsh medium secondary school in Caerphilly County Borough. All pupils will be encouraged strongly to com- municate with each other in Welsh, and to enjoy extra curricular events that celebrate the use of the language. Parental involvement and encouragement for their children to speak Welsh as often as possible is essential.

There are several ways students can be supported:-

• Through involvement in the Urdd. • Via Menter Iaith Caerffili (the Caerphilly Welsh Language Initiative). • By watching Welsh television and listening to radio programmes. • Using Welsh language books and magazines. • As a parent you too could learn Welsh in evening classes.

Attendance

There is a proven link between regular attendance and achievement. This is why we remind the students constantly of the importance of regular attendance and punctuality. We also keep a watchful eye on attendance and try to communicate early with parents or guardians in the event of patterns of non-attendance. Punctuality

Pupils must arrive promptly at all lessons. They should also arrive at Registration by 8:25am prompt. In the event of a bus arriving late, the pupils must sign the late book at the main reception.

Absence

Parents or guardians are asked to write a letter to the school, addressed to the Form Tutor, explaining why the student has been absent from school, however brief the period. Please send the letter on the first day the student returns to school. Should the absence last longer than two days, the pupil‟s parents or guardians should contact the school by phone in order to discuss the matter with the appropriate Head of Year. Failure to produce written explanation will result in and unauthorised absence being recorded in the register.

Parents’ Handbook 2018 / 2019 19 Transport

The District Education Office, make transport arrangements.

Ms Ruth Evans (School Transport Officer) Telephone Number: (01443) 864863.

Mobile Phone Policy

It is not realistic to prohibit phones being brought to school, nor is it logistically possible for schools to collect phones in each morning and return them in the afternoon. It is our policy to allow pupils to have a mobile phone with them in school under the conditions outlined in the policy below.

Phones must not be used for any purpose during the school day (e.g. phoning, texting, surfing the internet, taking photos, taking videos), including on arrival in school, break time and lunchtime.

Phones must always be switched off (not on silent mode) and kept out of view. If a pupil breaches these rules the phone will be confiscated and given in to the office. It will be returned the following day on receipt of a letter from parents.

Note: All points in the policy apply to phones, I pods, MP3, MP4 players and any similar electronic equipment.

Homework

Homework and preparation work is planned by departments according to the requirements of the curriculum and its stage of development. Homework may be practise, preparation for classwork, an opportunity for individual enquiry, reading, learning basic information or revision. Parental support in ensuring the availability of a proper allowance of space and time is essential. Parents or guardians are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure that students work at a regular pace. All homework will be logged in a special Homework Diary, and parents or guardians are asked to check this book every evening and sign it once a week. The details of the Homework Diary are to be found in the diary itself.

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni 20

Religious Education

Religious Education is offered to every student. There is no adherence to any particular denominational beliefs, but moral Christian standards are offered and comparisons are made from time to time with other religious traditions.

Sex Education

Sex education is taught mainly in the Welsh Baccalaureate lessons and during cross-curricular weeks though other departments deal with the subject in various themes. The Science Department deals with the subject from a scientific point of view while the Welsh Baccalaureate lessons give students the opportunity to discuss.

Equal Opportunities

We believe in the intrinsic worth of every individual. All pupils have equal rights to education, whatever their gender, class, disability, learning needs, race or religion. The PSE programme is proactive in promoting racial harmony and equality of opportunity.
