Newton Thomas is legendary as one of Australia's most outstanding Clay Target shootes and one of the finest duck shwtersI've ever had the pleasure of shooting alongside in the duck swamps of when game was really plentiful. His uncanny ability to accurately point the shotgun was nothing short of amazing. I well remember one year we were shooting the International Teams Match on the old Australian Gun Club grounds at East Bunvwd, Newton headed our squad of five shooters and I followed him on lane two with Paul and Speny Marshall from Tasmania on three and four, and for the love of me I can't remember who the fifth shooter was. After the war. Newton Thomas joined I.C.I., which was then the only major cartridge manufacturer in Austrslis. Newton's position was titled "Field Technical Officer" and provided him with an opportunity to combine business with pleasure, and ha became widely recognised as a top authority on all matters relating to shooting. A number of new products were given tough field tests by the young expert, who also filled a useful public rela- tions role for I.C.I. due to his total honesty and credibility. However, it was pmbably through his competition shooting activities that Newton Thomas was most widely known. He modelled his target shooting style on that of oham- pion pigeon shooter "Calrossie" Sutherland, who was also an I.C.I. personality. After moving to clay target shooting, Newton amassed an enviable remrd of appearances in Australian Mackin- tosh Tmphy teams, winning his way into twenty two teams, in which he achieved the exalted position of Team High Gun on seven occasions. Followers of the Australian claylbusting scene will recognise that this is a complete list of all the Australian national titles in the standard disciplines (that is, ex- cluding Olympic Trench and International Skeet) and is a feat that has never been repeated. In the mould of a true champion, Newton turned to ad- ministrative activities as his way of putting back into the sport a return for the enjoyment he had derived from it as a participant. AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS - OCTOBER, 1987 In 1967 George set up his own business as a firearms A PROFILE ON OUR and ammunition dealer and shooting consultant. HISTORIAN George Biggs' administration involvement in the sport goes back to almost the beginning of his first shot at clays which was at the Coburg Gun Club, where he was hijacked GEORGE BIGGS onto the committee after three months of membership. A year later he found himself elected to the A.C.T.A. Ex- ecutive Committee where he served a term of 25 years under six presidents. finally retiring from the position at Launceston in 1975. Apart from serving on several gun club committees he was also President of the Australian Gun Club at Burwood for a period of eight .years. Several National Cham~ion- ships were held octhis ground before they became rotated around the states. In recent years George has become much more involved with the instruction and coaching side of our sport. He finds this work very rewarding as it allows him to put to work the vast amount of experience and knowledge ac- quired over the years. Recently George wrote and published the first Australian book on the subject of shotgulming, namely "Trap and Skeet Shooting". Fmm time to time he has also written articles for sporting magazines on shotgun shooting, and is currently involved in the making of video films on shooting techniques. In 1977, together with "Pud Burgess, George submit- ted a plan to instigate a National Coaching System. This plan was later approved by the A.C.T.A. and put into action with the appointment of Newton Thomas as Director. During his 40 years of continuous registration as an A.C.T.A. shooter, he has not at any time been inactive in any A.C.T.A. official capacity, his record speaks for itself: Victorian State Coaching Director 1977-1983. The question now arises what would we use these funds for? Recently, the State Secretary sent your club a list of what these funds could and would be used for. We as a State body do not have the means of raising funds as that of your olub, such as the running of shooting programs. The majority of our funds come from: (a) State Government Grants: (b) Sponsorship; (c) Profit from the State Trap & Skeet Carnivals. If these three means of financing your State Assooiation were to cease we could not operate as we do today for very long, nor could we afford to finance a State Secretary or Coaching Director. The usual Danvin formula of having a night shoot on Thursday 30 July, trench and skeet on the next day with the main DTL events spread over the long weekend was followed. Unfortunately due to events out of the control of the Club the traditional duck and goose shooting "Cham- pionships" on the Tuesday after the weekend was not possible. The 1986187 wet season was a poor one resulting in very limited and late nesting of magpie geese. This species is slow maturing and consequently the authorities were forced to delay the opening of the season by a month. There is a lot more to this story than the brief details above but there is no doubt that there were more than a few disappointed would-be hunters who were looking for- ward to a spot of mid-year duck shooting in perfect weather. It may not be altogether a bad thing because after the pointed feedback from shooters it is unlikely that it will happen next year. But let's hope that next wet season is a good one with everything back to normal. However, there were no such problems with the barra fishing "Championships" and the Gods did favor us that day, but more of that later.
