Box 963 Ballina 2478 Trailables CC 061019 (thanks Colin- Ed) Almost surreal flat water, with a strong run in tide pacing a Northerly wind, which the Airport recorded at 15-20knots. Didn’t seem up to 20 as the water was so flat, especially after the last few rough race days. Absolutely perfect Ballina race course, with High Tide allowing the RC to put the 2 clearance Top Marks the other side of the sand flats towards Shaws Bay, so we could get a perfect W/L angle from Mobbs. This gave a gybe set at the Top Mark, another gybe halfway down, and a 2 sail gybe-to-work at the Bottom Mark, then add a zillion tacks avoiding the tide and .. a big difference to some one tack no gybe courses we can get. No bug spray needed as … no Spiders present . That is a first for maybe 4 years .. like where not one Spider raced at a CC. The reduced fleet was Rabbit and Spudgun with conventional kites, and Incy and Bella with 2 sail configuration, so no asso boats, and they missed a great day for asso, with winds mainly 15s with some 20 hot spots for some deep down runs. It was a Spider Day with … no Spiders. It was a day for Spudgun, with a great first work and run stamping a claim never weakened, and the corrected Results gave it Spudgun to Incy to Rabbit to Bella. The first CC win for Spudgun as they settle into the boat. First work we caught dinghies and RS100s before the Point, as we all were hugging the sand bank, and it was all the different sorts of boats mixing it up crossing tacks, with little dinghies calling for Trailers to go closer before calling “water” .. chuckle .. The Trailer sailors .. I mean the sailors sailing .. ahh .. anyway we all come from dinghies so felt right at home .. just with boats weighing just a tad more. I didn’t get that warm welcoming feeling tho ..from the dinghy fleet .. Runs were gybe-set, then cross over the shallow sand spit, looking down at the worm holes below, but safe in the top of the tide…. gybe over at the Wall and ¾ to square run to the Mark, with a 2 sail gybe at the Mark .. in a stronger wind channel, causing some concern … to some…and after 2 stuff ups at the Bottom Mark for Rabbit, ..given one last chance and then “put the old bloke in the cabin and we’ll sail it…” Run along the beach to home was kind, and by then wind angle allowed kites all the way home, and Spudgun had a nice one which helped put the icing on the cake…. for the win. About as good a race track as we get at Ballina, and winds much kinder for a nice day at the Office. 3 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.rrsrc.com.au P.O. Box 963 Ballina 2478 Land Ahoy! gennaker report for Sunday 6 October 2019 (thanks Michael and Duncan – Ed) A better than average line and a fair wind meant the gennaker fleet of all six Formula Fifteens and three RS100’s got off to a level start. Casper (RS100 Duncan) got the best start by packing in at the starboard (favoured) end of the line. Secret (F15 Barry and Anna) came into the line at speed and led the F15 pack away. 4 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.rrsrc.com.au P.O. Box 963 Ballina 2478 Go Vince! But in a display of just how close the racing was, three different F15’s - Secret, Second Wind (Michael and Tara) and Magic Formula (Justin and Clare) - had been in the lead by half way up the first leg. Toxic (Tom and Brendan) was always in there too. 5 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.rrsrc.com.au P.O. Box 963 Ballina 2478 Secret and Second Wind then got slightly ahead of the pack, only to find themselves in something of a tacking and covering dual as they repeatedly came together on the narrow course and needing to respond to the starboard tack right of way boat. That allowed Toxic to sneak up to form part of a three-way tussle. Secret rounded the top mark first and found a private gust that gave it a 200-metre advantage at the bottom mark. From there it was never challenged for the lead; somewhat helped by the fact Second Wind and Toxic were left in a tight battle for second place. Magic Formula was initially also not too far behind. Toxic survived two capsizes to eventually play the northern shore advantage and get comfortably ahead of Second Wind to finish the race second. After a capsize on the fourth run, Magic Formula came in fourth with Mr Bond (Laura and Zac) fifth F15 to finish. Numero Uno (Daniel and Pip) broke a spinnaker halyard on the first run and withdrew from the race. 6 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.rrsrc.com.au P.O. Box 963 Ballina 2478 Meanwhile back in the RS100’s, Duncan capsized on the first work to let Vince race away in 5Buckaroo$ to a six-minute lead over the one and three quarter hour race. The beautiful nor-easter combined with incoming tide to favour the F15 fleet over the RS100. Despite that Vince took out second place on yardstick. Garry is still relishing his new boat HooRay and improving each week. MONOS Des lookin’ good 7 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.rrsrc.com.au P.O. Box 963 Ballina 2478 Cat Report A fleet of eight cats lined up for the 3rd race of the club championship. The sea breeze started building as we left the beach after a morning of light breeze and concerns we may have needed paddles. This week we used the in-coming tide NE course with a start off Mobbs Bay. With the starting line having slight starboard bias most of the fleet opted for the southern end, although Shore Thing tried a port start to gain the tide run along the southern wall but had to wait for rest of the fleet to cross on starboard. The competition for the lead started early with “A” and “Dazed & Confused” locked together and this continued throughout most of the race. The first work had all the usual wind shifts with some boats getting the better of the shifts. At the top mark “A” lead by a small margin from “Dazed & Confused”. 8 Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club website: www.rrsrc.com.au P.O. Box 963 Ballina 2478 2 FOOT Extra followed with Finely Tuned, Shore Thing and the rest of the fleet. The first downwind saw “A” slip back behind 2 FOOT Extra but regained this place on the next work and closed up on “Dazed & Confused”. Shore Thing was revelling in stronger breeze and was close behind Finely Tuned on downwinds. The race continued in this order until the last time around the top mark when “Dazed & Confused” lived up to its name and collected the buoy anchor rope and damaged his centre board forcing him to retire. Leaving “A” out in front followed by 2 FOOT Extra. Finely Tuned, Shore Thing and Ozspray tussled for 3rd place across the finish line, with Finely Tuned holding out. First Strike and N52 both struggled sailing single handed on their cats in the wind but had a close race.
