Preliminary Phytochemical Screening of 6 Members of Leucas (Lamiaceae)

ABSTRACT In the present study, six species of Leucas were assessed for phytochemical screening. Aqueous, methanol, ethanol and chloroform extracts of each plant were subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening. Ethanol extract were positive for proteins and amino acids for six species. Methanol extracts were positive for phenols, tannins, flavonoids, carbohydrates and glycosides. The total phenols, flavonoids and tannins, were quantified in the methanolic extracts by standard spectrophotometric methods. Gallic acid was used as standard for the determination of total phenol by Folin-ciocalteu method. Quercetin and tannic acids were used as the standards for flavonoids and tannins respectively. L.eriostoma shows higher concentration of total phenolics whereas L. lavandulifolia shows higher concentration of flavonoids and tannins. The study reveals that the presence or absences of particular phytochemicals are determnined by the polarity of solvents used for extraction. In ‘the Flora of Juss., Codiaeum variegatum (L.) Rumph. ex Juss., Croton Solapur district’ Gaikwad and Garad (2015) reported bonplandianus Baill., Emblica officinalis Gaertn, 19 genera and 62 species. Se estudiaron e identificaron los pliegos de la familia Lamiaceae depositados en el herbario MA recolectados por Luis Neé durante la expe- dición Malaspina, la cual duró algo más de 5 años y recorrió gran parte de América, Filipinas, Australia y algunas islas del océano Pacífico. En total se estudiaron 166 pliegos correspondientes a 68 especies y 23 géneros de labiadas. La mayoría de las colecciones identificadas (14 géneros y 51 especies) proviene de América. Se ha localizado nuevo material tipo de dos especies del género Gardoquia. Se ha excluido el género Salvia (otros 164 pliegos correspondientes a 46 especies), ya que será publicado en un trabajo independiente posterior. The sheets of Lamiaceae deposited in the herbarium MA collected by Luis Neé during the Malaspina expedition, that in 5 years traveled along America, Philippines, Australia, and some Pacific islands. They were studied and identified 166 sheets corresponding to 68 species and 23 genera of the Lamiaceae family. The most of the identified collections (14 genera and 51 species) are from América. -

Chouhan and Sushil K. Singh* Department of Pharmaceutics, Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi – 221005, India. Accepted 10 December, 2010 Plants of genus Leucas (Lamiacae) are widely used in traditional medicine to cure many diseases such as cough, cold, diarrhoea and inflammatory skin disorder. A variety of phytoconstituents has been isolated from the Leucas species which include lignans, flavonoids, coumarins, steroids, terpenes, fatty acids and aliphatic long chain compounds. Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidiarrhoeal, antimicrobial, antioxidant and insecticidal activities have been reported in the extracts of these plants and their phytoconstituents. An overview of the ethnobotanical, phytochemical and pharmacological investigations on the Leucas species is presented in this review.
