She was not the only young spectator at the battle, but she had one of the best views of the _conflict. From her home on West Hill (AK)-, Julia-beheld the horror and splendor of battle when the men of the Union Army of the Frontier encountered the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi. Today, only memories remain as testament to a battle that changed many families' lives forever. This lesson is based on the National Register of Historic Places registration file for "Prairie Grove Battlefield" and other primary sources. The lesson can be used to teach units on the Civil War and southern history. The Battle of Prairie Grove: Civilian Recollections of the Civil War December the 7th, 1862, will long be remembered especially by those of us who lived here and witnessed the battle of Prairie Grove. It was a beautiful, cold, frosty Sunday morning.... About 10 o'clock the cannonading began and about noon war began in earnest. When it seemed everyone would be killed. --Mrs. Julia West Pyeatt (Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park) Witness to the Battle of Prairie Grove, as a child Julia West was fourteen years old when she viewed the carnage and destruction ofthe battle at Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Yet, the images of that day and those that followed were vividly etched in her memory forever. She was notthe only young spectator at the battle, but she did have one of the best views of the conflict. Looking south from her home on West Hill, Julia beheld the splendor and horror of battle when the men of the Union Army of the Frontier encountered the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi. The southern troops waited atop the heavily-wooded Prairie Grove ridge stretching from the large yellow two-story Borden House on the east end to the small log Morton House on the west end of the ridge. The only rebels visible were those in the clearings around the homes and theFayetteville-Cane Hill road which bisected the ridge. Footsore Yankees advanced across open corn, wheat, and hay fields in the valley to face the Southern foe. While none of the original houses remain, the valley fields continue to produce hay and wheat. Descendants of the West family still live on their hill. On the east end of the ridge stands the second Borden House; built in 1868 to replace the one burned the dayafter the battle. Only memories remain as testament to a battle that changed many families' lives forever. It was written by Don Montgomery, Park Historian at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park, and Lea Flowers Baker, Education Coordinator at the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. It was edited by Kathleen Hunter, an education consultant working in Hartford, CT and the Teaching with Historic Places staff. Where it fits into the curriculum Topics: The lesson can be used in teaching units on the Civil War, and southern history. It will help students gain a better understanding of how the Civil War affected civilians of all ages and provide an opportunity to examine what and why people remember, and how those memories affect our record of the past. Time period: Civil War Era. Objectives for students 1) To place the Battle of Prairie Grove in the context of Arkansas' role in the Civil War. 2) To understand the harsh realities of civil war and its effects on both soldiers and civilians. 3) To learn to analyze oral histories for content and reliability. 4) To consider how events related to the Civil War affected communities across the country. How might you find answers to these questions? 6 9 Setting the Stage On Dec. 7, 1862, Union forces from the Army of the Frontier and Confederates from the newly formed Army of the Trans-Mississippi clashed on the open corn, wheat, and hay fields of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. The opposing forces had previously fought several minor engagements in Missouri and Arkansas. The battle opened with Confederate cavalry routing some Union cavalry a few miles south of the Prairie Grove Church.

    THE EN ÉCHELON ATTACK IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Terrence L. Salada and John D. Wedo The en échelon attack appears in several battles in the American Civil War (ACW), although that fact might not be well-known to most readers. Perhaps the most covered and well-known example by a large margin is the Confederate attack on July 2, 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Accounts of the battle often explain the tactic, citing a Civil War battle or two where it was used prior to Gettysburg, but overlook its history and full performance record. To address this gap, this paper examines the en échelon attack from its historical roots through all major battles exhibiting it throughout the war. This paper first discusses the word échelon and its meanings and presents a summary of the discussion of this tactic by Baron Antoine Henri de Jomini, the prominent author of the 19th century on strategy and tactics. The opinions of authors from standard works on the battle are presented to show the variety of opinions on the tactic. Because of its prominence among en échelon attacks, General Robert E. Lee’s choice of this tactic is then discussed. Other battles exhibiting this tactic in attack are summarized, and statistics from the group of battles are computed and discussed. Conclusions include a caution for historians writing about the échelon attack and its effectiveness. In discussing the choice of the by Lee on that July afternoon, this paper covers only this tactic and avoids all other controversies surrounding the attack including, but 1 not limited to, Lee’s Sunrise Order, the absence of cavalry, the quality of the reconnaissance, the First Corps’ counter-march, and General James Longstreet’s supposed slow performance.

    Civil War December 1862 Highlight: On November 14, Burnside, now in command of the Army of the Potomac, sent a corps to occupy the vicinity of Falmouth near Fredericksburg. The rest of the army soon followed. Lee reacted by entrenching his army on the heights behind the town. On December 11, Union engineers laid five pontoon bridges across the Rappahannock under fire. On the 12th, the Federal army crossed over, and on December 13, Burnside mounted a series of futile frontal assaults on Prospect Hill and Marye’s Heights that resulted in staggering casualties. Meade’s division, on the Union left flank, briefly penetrated Jackson’s line but was driven back by a counterattack. Union generals C. Feger Jackson and George Bayard, and Confederate generals Thomas R.R. Cobb and Maxey Gregg were killed. On December 15, Burnside called off the offensive and recrossed the river, ending the campaign. Reuben M. Benjamin was born in June 1833 in New York. He married Laura W. Woodman in 1857. By 1860, they were residents of Bloomington, IL. Benjamin was an attorney and was active in the 1869 Illinois Constitutional Convention. Later, he became an attorney in the lead Granger case of Munn vs. the People which granted the states the right to regulate warehouse and railroad charges. In 1873, he was elected judge in McLean County and helped form the Illinois Wesleyan University law school. His file consists of a transcript of a letter to his wife written from La Grange, TN, dated January 21, 1865. He may have been part of a supply train regiment bringing food and other necessities to Union troops in Memphis, TN. This letter mentions troop movements. Due to poor health, Benjamin served only a few months.

N., July 26, 1863 GENERAL: I have the honor to report that, on my arrival here on the 11th instant, I found the Arkansas River swollen, and at once commenced the construction of boats to cross my troops. The rebels, under General Cooper (6,000), were posted on Elk Creek, 25 miles south of the Arkansas, on the Texas road, with strong outposts guarding every crossing of the river from behind rifle-pits. General Cabell, with 3,000 men, was expected to join him on the 17th, when they proposed attacking this place. I could not muster 3,000 effective men for a fight, but determined, if I could effect a crossing, to give them battle on the other side of the river. At midnight of the 15th, I took 250 cavalry and four pieces of light artillery, and marched up the Arkansas about 13 miles, drove their pickets from the opposite bank, and forded the river, taking the ammunition chests over in a flat-boat. I then passed down on the south side, expecting to get in the rear of their pickets at the mouth of the Grand River, opposite this post, and capture them, but they had learned of my approach and had fled.

    LITTLE ROCK NATIONAL CEMETERY National Cemetery The Union Army buried their dead in the southeast corner of the new city cemetery—now Oakland- Fraternal Cemetery. In 1868, the federal government purchased additional land adjacent to the original burials and the 12.1-acre property was designated Little Rock National Cemetery. Remains were brought here from DeValls Bluff, Lewisburg, Marks View of cemetery entrance, Mills, Pine Bluff, Princeton, and other Arkansas 1903, and sketch plan, 1869. National Archives and towns and battlefields. About half the 5,409 remains Records Administration. were buried as unknowns. St. John’s Hospital in Little Rock, c. 1870. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, Little Rock. In the 1870s, the U.S. Army Quartermaster General’s Office built a lodge for the cemetery superintendent, placed permanent Civil War Little Rock marble headstones on graves, and enclosed the cemetery with a stone wall. Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains 40 (Autumn 2017): 168-185 168 Kansas History Báxoje in Blue: Ioway Soldiers in the Union Army by Greg Olson n 1864, there were seventy-eight men between the ages of twenty and forty-five listed on the rolls of the Ioway Nation. Of that number, fifty, or nearly two-thirds, had volunteered to serve in the Union army during the Civil War. 1 Sixteen Ioway men enlisted in the Thirteenth Kansas Volunteer Infantry in 1862, and thirty-two joined the Fourteenth Kansas Volunteer Cavalry in 1863. Seven more joined various other units in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. During the war, Ioway soldiers saw action in Tennessee, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and the Indian Territory.2 IAlthough the Ioways were certainly not the only Indigenous Americans to serve in the military during the war, the circumstances of their enlistment and their experiences in the army were different from those of most other Native American soldiers in the Trans-Mississippi West. Most Native men served in segregated units, but all fifty Ioways served in integrated units. This article seeks to investigate why the Ioways had the opportunity to serve in regular companies with white men. It also explores the Ioways’ military experiences and addresses some of the obvious questions raised by their willingness to enlist in the army. One wonders, for example, why the Ioways, who had been frustrated by six decades of contentious relations with the United States, chose to send two-thirds of their able-bodied men to fight for the federal government.
