Confederate Scrapbooks 1857-1930 [Early 1900s] Extent: 3 items Accession Number: 2002.183 Abstract: Two scrapbooks and one printed address memorializing the Confederate States of America, and containing primarily newspaper clippings, currency, poetry, written tributes and memorials, and photographic images. Address is a tribute to General Robert E. Lee by Honorable Harry B. Hawes of Missouri. Historical Note These scrapbooks were probably compiled to commemorate the Civil War from the Confederate point of view. Scrapbooks were one of several ways used to commemorate the Civil War. Commemoration began in the years immediately following the war and still exists today. A major method of commemoration is monuments of both citizen-soldiers and officers. This method actually began during the war. Commemoration speeches were also common, like the one by Harry B. Hawes included in the collection. They were of major figures or battles of the war. Another major way of commemoration is through motion pictures such as “Gettysburg” and “Glory” (about the 54th Massachusetts Colored Regiment). Today, major battles are commemorated through reenactments of the battles. -

Bleeding Kansas Series Returns to Constitution Hall State Historic Site
December 30, 2014 Bleeding Kansas Series Returns to Constitution Hall State Historic Site LECOMPTON, KS—Dramatic interpretations and talks about the violent conflict over slavery highlight the 19th annual Bleeding Kansas series, which begins January 25, 2015. The programs are held at 2 p.m. Sundays, through March 1. Bleeding Kansas describes that time in Kansas Territory, from 1854 to 1861, during the struggle to determine whether the new state would be free or slave. Each of these programs explores aspects of the state’s unique history. January 25 - “The Kansas Statehouse Restoration,” Barry Greis, statehouse architect, with remarks by Matt Veatch, state archivist, Kansas Historical Society. This program is a Kansas Day commemoration. February 1 - “Railroad Empire Across the Heartland: Rephotographing Alexander Gardner's 1867 Westward Journey Through Kansas,” John Charlton, photographer, Kansas Geological Survey, University of Kansas with remarks by Nancy Sherbert, curator of photographs, Kansas Historical Society. NO. 1 Report of Maj. Gen. James G. Blunt, U. S. Army, commanding District of the Frontier HEADQUARTERS DISTRICT OF THE FRONTIER, In the Field, Fort Blunt, C. N., July 26, 1863 GENERAL: I have the honor to report that, on my arrival here on the 11th instant, I found the Arkansas River swollen, and at once commenced the construction of boats to cross my troops. The rebels, under General Cooper (6,000), were posted on Elk Creek, 25 miles south of the Arkansas, on the Texas road, with strong outposts guarding every crossing of the river from behind rifle-pits. General Cabell, with 3,000 men, was expected to join him on the 17th, when they proposed attacking this place. I could not muster 3,000 effective men for a fight, but determined, if I could effect a crossing, to give them battle on the other side of the river. At midnight of the 15th, I took 250 cavalry and four pieces of light artillery, and marched up the Arkansas about 13 miles, drove their pickets from the opposite bank, and forded the river, taking the ammunition chests over in a flat-boat. I then passed down on the south side, expecting to get in the rear of their pickets at the mouth of the Grand River, opposite this post, and capture them, but they had learned of my approach and had fled. -

Employing Critical Race Theory as the theoretical framework, each counties’ analysis results are examined. The concepts of race, systemic racism, White privilege and interest-convergence are used to assess both counties continuance of sustaining a racially imbalanced historical narrative. I posit that the construction of history of Bates County and Cass County continues to influence and reinforces systemic racism in the local narrative. Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains 37 (Summer 2014): 78–99 78 Kansas History Price’s Raid and the Battle of Mine Creek by Edgar Langsdorf ilson’s Creek was the first great battle of the war west of the Mississippi, and Mine Creek the last,” concluded historian Albert Castel in his 1968 biography of Confederate General Sterling Price. “Between these events is the story of a lost cause. After Mine Creek came limbo.” With this fascinating conclusion in mind, it seemed wrong to “Wallow the Kansas battle’s 150th anniversary year to pass without recognition. Thus, “Price’s Raid and the Battle of Mine Creek,” which was first published in the autumn 1964 issue of the Kansas Historical Quarterly to mark the centennial of that seminal event in Kansas Civil War history, is republished here in its entirety to commemorate the raid’s sesquicentennial. After fifty years Edgar Langsdorf’s fine study remains an important and interesting contribution to the history of the only Civil War battle between regular Union and Confederate troops fought on Kansas soil. It has been edited for style only, so that it might more closely reflect our twenty-first-century usage, and the editors have added a few clarifying comments and additional secondary source citations to the footnotes to reflect more recent additions to the scholarship. In the spring and summer of 1864, when the Civil War was entering its fourth year, the situation of the Union armies was grim. In the east, they had suffered terrible losses in the battles of the Wilderness (May 5 and 6), Spotsylvania (May 12), and Cold Harbor (June 3), while west of the Mississippi campaigns in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas had ended disastrously, allowing the Southern forces to assume the offensive. -

She was not the only young spectator at the battle, but she had one of the best views of the _conflict. From her home on West Hill (AK)-, Julia-beheld the horror and splendor of battle when the men of the Union Army of the Frontier encountered the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi. Today, only memories remain as testament to a battle that changed many families' lives forever. This lesson is based on the National Register of Historic Places registration file for "Prairie Grove Battlefield" and other primary sources. The lesson can be used to teach units on the Civil War and southern history. -
