    THE FOUNDER “He put his heart to a task and pleased himself And made himself an auspicious, free servant.”(Ghalib) The Aligarh Muslim University is one of the oldest premier Central Universities of India with a unique and rich culture of its own. It is a Residential Academic Institution. It owes its existence to the selfless and untiring efforts of the great visionary Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, one of the architects of modern India was born on October 17, 1817 in Delhi. We, the aligarians mark the day as ‘sir syed day’ and celebrate the day with full vigour and pride. The 1857 revolt was one of the turning points of Syed Ahmad Khan’s life. Before it, his career had been that of a civil servant and a scholar. In 1847, he published the famous archaeological masterpiece, Asarus Sanadeed, a book that provided a wealth of information on countless historical monuments in Delhi from the eight hundred year long Muslim era. In 1855, he published yet another book Ain-e-Akbari. After the 1857 revolt, Syed Ahmad authored the marvelous book Asbab-e-Baghawat-e- Hind' (The causes of Indian Revolt). Deeply moved by the socio-economic and educational plight of his community after the First War of Independence, he was quick to realize that the panacea for these ills lay in inculcating the spirit of free enquiry and modernism in the community. His exposure to the British Universities, particularly those at Oxford and Cambridge, and their public schools, inspired him with a new vision of a harmonious pattern of culture, combining the best elements in the cultures of the East with the arts and sciences of the West Ahmad was highly impressed by the culture and customs of Western society.

    Women on South Asian Coins Pankaj Tandon1 Some years ago, I began to wonder how many women had appeared on the coins of South Asia, the area which today includes the countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. I started gathering images and ideas and started to compile a list. Along the way, I came across a paper by Jayanti Rath,2 which mentioned a total of 20 queens, although only 14 of them had demonstrably issued coins, and a small webpage3 celebrating International Women’s Week which mentioned 5 queens, of whom one had not been listed by Rath. However, I was discovering quite a few more, so I decided to continue my project, and this paper is the result. To be clear, my goal is to cover only human women who have appeared on coins, not goddesses. There are many goddesses who are depicted on coins, and the subject of deities being featured on Indian coins is one on which quite a bit has been written.4 These are not the subject of my census. I have discovered a total of 110 women who unquesionably could be said to have appeared in one way or another on coins of the sub-continent. Another three possibly appear on Gupta coins but it is debated whether the figures appearing on these coins are queens or goddesses. One more is supposed to be represented by one or two peacocks on certain Sikh coins, but this is hotly debated. Figure 1 presents a Table listing these 114 women. Finally, another six female names, serving as the gotra names of kings of the Satavahana and related dynasties, appear on coins.

There were no four female rulers anywhere in the world. They are so progressive and so secular. The history of Bhopal is 240 years old, out of which 107 years it was ruled by women. Women ruled the most in any state of India, in Riyasat-e-Bhopal, and after Britain's Victorian rule, it became the world's longest-running one-man rule run by the Begums here. Bhopal, a princely state of the Nawabs, enjoys a place which is not held by any other state or princely state in the world except the United Kingdom. Bhopal was the second state or princely state in the world where four women ruled. These women Nawabs held the power of the princely state of Bhopal for 107 years. The princely state of Bhopal was founded in 1708 by Sardar Dost Mohammad Khan. Gohar Begum Qudsia of the historian Syed AkhtarHussain assumed power in Bhopal from 1819 to 1837. She was the first woman Begum of Bhopal.
