However, in order to put such policies into practice, social actors like teachers and teacher educators must include them in their practices. In this context, this study stems from the following research question: how does initial teacher education (ITE) promote the SD Agendas (2030 and 2063 for Africa)? The approach to this question is carried out through a case study focused on an Angolan teacher education higher education institution, in its graduate course for future secondary school biology teachers. The main aims of this study are (i) to characterize how ITE includes SD and (ii) to suggest ways to improve SD, particularly focusing on students’ future professional needs. Data were gathered from document analysis (the pedagogical curriculum plan of the course; titles and abstracts of final-year future biology teachers’ essays) and an interview with the course director of the biology teaching program of the Angolan institution. Content analysis of the gathered evidence was based on a three-dimensional framework: (a) SD goals (SDG) and the curriculum; (b) teacher education principles; and (c) current Angolan curricular perspectives.

Or, une importante littérature a remis en cause sa capacité à consolider la paix sur le long terme. Ce mémoire questionne l’approche de l’ethnicité, des institutions et des relations peuple-élites dans la théorie du partage du pouvoir. Il propose de la ré- approcher en se basant sur la théorie constructiviste de l’ethnicité, qui reconnaît la multiplicité et la relative fluidité des identités ethniques, sur une approche néo-institutionnaliste, qui étudie les interactions des institutions avec leur environnement, et en accordant une attention particulière au lien entre peuple et élites. Ce mémoire développe trois arguments principaux. 1–La politisation du clivage ethnique nuit au bon fonctionnement d’un système démocratique, menace la durabilité de la paix et transforme la nature de la violence. Le « succès » du partage du pouvoir peut donc être défini comme la dépolitisation de ce clivage. 2–La politisation du clivage ethnique n’est pas naturelle, mais résulte d’un processus dans lequel les institutions formelles et informelles ainsi que la violence jouent des rôles clés. 3–La dépolitisation du clivage ethnique est possible si des garanties pour représentation politique et la sécurité des catégories ethniques sont mises en place, et si des incitatifs pour la mobilisation d’identités non-ethniques sont apportés.

    James Kwegyir Aggrey (1875- 1927) Kwegyir Aggrey was born in Anomabo. At the age of eight, he was baptized and given his Christian name James. He also attended the above mentioned Wesleyan elementary school.1 In 1898, the Bishop John Bryan Small (?- 1915) of the “African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church” (USA) came to Gold Coast. He had been there, before, when he had come from Barbados/ Bahamas as a clerk of the British Army, but had resigned because of British aggression towards the Asante. He then had travelled to the US to become a minister at the AME Zion Church. In Gold Coast, he was looking for educationally qualified young men who would go to the US for training and later return as missionaries. Small stayed for only six years and then returned to the US. Nevertheless, when he died, some of his last words were: "Don't let my African work fail!"2 Small selected Aggrey because he was known to be very bright. Aggrey was brought to Salisbury/ North Carolina and attended the Livingstone College where he graduated in 1902 with three academic degrees. He was appointed minister of the AME Zion Church in Salisbury and married Rose Douglas, a native of Virginia, with whom he had four children. Aggrey began to teach at the college. In 1920, Dr. Paul Monroe,3 professor at Columbia University, offered to him the opportunity to join the otherwise all-white African Education Commission of the Phelps-Stokes Fund4 to assess the educational needs in Africa. Aggrey agreed and started a voyage visiting areas in the today countries Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola.

    Ashley Koglin North Huron High School Kinde, MI Angola, Water and Sanitation Angola: A New Outlook on Water and Sanitation Education In 1975, The Republic of Angola was established as a country in southwestern Africa. After gaining its independence, the country entered a civil war that lasted almost three decades, ending in 2002. As a large country, Angola has a wide variety of landscapes, including the semi-desert Atlantic area bordering its neighboring country Namibia's “Skeleton Coast.” The interior is sparsely populated rainforest with densely settled towns and cities on the northern coast and north-central river valleys. Located along the Atlantic coast on the northwest side of Angola is the capital city Luanda, named the world's most expensive city multiple times because of the civil war which left the country vulnerable. Rebuilding from the war since 2002, Luanda is still recovering today. Angola is the seventh largest country in Africa with a population of 28.81 million people and a land area of 481,354 sq. miles (smaller than the size of Alaska, but larger than Texas in the United States). The population is 61.5% urban while 38.5% is rural. The most predominantly spoken language is Portuguese along with other mother-tongue languages. Angola has a semi-presidential republic government ruled by President Jose Eduardo and Prime Minister Fernando de Piedade Dias Dos Santos (“Angola”). Angola lies in a sub-tropical zone and yet its climate is relatively cool considering the country’s close proximity to the equator. The coastline is tempered by the cool Benguela Current, resulting in a climate similar to coastal Peru.
