The aim of this study was to investigate how molluscs in two mangrove creeks (Buenos Aires and Tronco) at the São Marcos Bay, coast of the Maranhão State, respond to spatial and temporal variations in the environment. Sampling was performed in the intertidal area along three zones established using a straight line transect of 100 m. Abiotic variables of water and sediment were measured at each creek. We found 5,912 specimens belonging to 23 species and 15 families of epifaunal and infaunal molluscs. The patterns of their distribution in the two creeks were different. Salinity, dissolved oxygen, and rainfall were the main variables that affected the temporal distribution of molluscs. We found low species richness in the overall mollusc composition. Diversity in the Buenos Aires Creek was lower than that observed in the Tronco Creek, possibly because of activities of a port located in proximity to the former.

Proceedings of the Fourth International Marine Biological Workshop: The Marine Flora and Fauna of Hong Kong and Southern China, Hong Kong, 11-29 April 1989. PEDIPEDINAE (GASTROPODA: ELLOBIIDAE) FROM HONG KONG Ant6nio M. de Frias Martins Departamento de Biologia, Universidade dos A~ores,P-9502 Ponta Delgada, Siio Miguel, A~ores,Portugal ABSTRACT Two species of Pedipedinae are recorded for the first time from Hong Kong and are here provisionally referred to as Pedipes jouani Montrouzier, 1862 and Microtralia alba (Gassies, 1865), described from New Caledonia. A descriptive study of the reproductive and nervous systems was conducted and confirms previous studies that both genera are consubfamilial. The distribution and dispersal of the species is discussed. INTRODUCTION The Indo-Pacific Ellobiidae are particularly well represented by conspicuous, mangrove- dwelling, macroscopic species, relatively few of which have been studied anatomically. Koslowsky (1933) presented a detailed description of Melampus boholensis 'H. and A. Adams' Pfeiffer, 1856. Morton (1955) described the anatomy of Pythia Roding, 1798, Ellobium Roding, 1798 [E.aurisjudae (L. 1758)l and of the small pedipedinian Marinula King, 1832 [M.filholi Hutton, 18781. Knipper and Meyer (1956) provided good illus- trations of the nervous systems of Ellobium (Auriculodes) gaziensis (Preston, 1913), Cassidula labrella (Deshayes, 1830) and Melampus semisulcatus Mousson, 1869. Cassidula Fhssac, 1821, Ellobium and Pythia were discussed by Beny et al. (1967) and Sumikawa and Miura (1978) studied in detail the reproductive system of Ellobium chinense (Pfeiffer, 1854).

We sequenced the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) of 25 E. chinense specimens collected from five coastal sites in South Korea, and identified 16 unique haplotypes. The maximum intraspecific variation among individuals was 1.6%, while interspecific differences from another ellobiid species, Auriculastra duplicata (Pfeiffer, 1854), ranged from 21.9 to 23.0%. Our barcoding data will be useful to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among pulmonate gastropods and infer the population genetic structure of E. chinense. Decrement in mangrove ecosystem will negatively affects the aquatic organims in general, including the gastropods present in that area. To understand the community structure of gastropods in that mangrove ecosystem, a research was conducted on March 2018. There were 3 line transects and in each line there were 5 plots (1mx1m). The gastropods in the plots were collocted manually for 3 weeks. Result shown that there were 11 gastropods species present, they were Cassidula aurifelis, Cerithidea cingulata, Cerithidea obtusa, Chicoreus capucinus, Ellobium aurisjudae, Ellobium aurismidae, Littoraria melanostoma, Littoraria scabra, Nerita balteata, Neritina carnucopia and Telescopium telescopium. The gastropods density was ranged from 9 - 15 organisms/m2. The value of species richness index (Da) was 4.16 - 4.21, the diversity index (H’) was 2.99 - 3.13, the dominance index (C) was 0.12 - 0.14 and the uniformity index (E) was 0.90 - 0.93. The water quality parameters were as follows: temperature was 27 - 29ºC; pH was 7.3 - 7.7 and salinity was 26 - 27.3º/oo. Gastropods community structure in the mangrove ecosystem of the Sungai Rawa Village was good and there was no dominant species.

Pfeifer, 1855) (Eupulmonata, Ellobiida, Ellobiidae), which inhabits the salt marshes along the coastal areas of northwestern Pacifc, is an endangered species on the IUCN Red List. Over recent decades, the population size of E. chinense has consistently decreased due to environmental interference caused by natural disasters and human activities. Here, we provide the frst assessment of the genetic diversity and population genetic structures of northwestern Pacifc E. chinense. The results analyzed with COI and microsatellites revealed that E. chinense population exhibit metapopulation characteristics, retaining under the infuence of the Kuroshio warm currents through expansion of the Late‑Middle and Late Pleistocene. We also found four phylogenetic groups, regardless of geographical distributions, which were easily distinguishable by four unidirectional and stepwise adenine‑to‑guanine transitions in COI (sites 207–282–354–420: A–A–A–A, A–A–G–A, G–A– G–A, and G–G–G–G). Additionally, the four COI hotspots were robustly connected with a high degree of covariance between them. We discuss the role of these covariate guanines which link to form four consecutive G‑quadruplexes, and their possible benefcial efects under positive selection pressure.

This is by far an incomplete treatment of the snail fauna of Brunei, but it deals with the species particularly relevant to this workshop. It covers the abundant and common taxa associated with coastal ecological systems in the region such as the rocky shores, mangroves and estuaries.

  • Assessment of Mitochondrial Genomes for Heterobranch Gastropod Phylogenetics Rebecca M
Varney et al. BMC Ecol Evo (2021) 21:6 BMC Ecology and Evolution https://doi.org/10.1186/s12862-020-01728-y RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Assessment of mitochondrial genomes for heterobranch gastropod phylogenetics Rebecca M. Varney1, Bastian Brenzinger2, Manuel António E. Malaquias3, Christopher P. Meyer4, Michael Schrödl2,5 and Kevin M. Kocot1,6* Abstract Background: Heterobranchia is a diverse clade of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial gastropod molluscs. It includes such disparate taxa as nudibranchs, sea hares, bubble snails, pulmonate land snails and slugs, and a number of (mostly small-bodied) poorly known snails and slugs collectively referred to as the “lower heterobranchs”. Evolutionary relationships within Heterobranchia have been challenging to resolve and the group has been subject to frequent and signifcant taxonomic revision. Mitochondrial (mt) genomes can be a useful molecular marker for phylogenetics but, to date, sequences have been available for only a relatively small subset of Heterobranchia. Results: To assess the utility of mitochondrial genomes for resolving evolutionary relationships within this clade, eleven new mt genomes were sequenced including representatives of several groups of “lower heterobranchs”. Maximum likelihood analyses of concatenated matrices of the thirteen protein coding genes found weak support for most higher-level relationships even after several taxa with extremely high rates of evolution were excluded. Bayes- ian inference with the CAT GTR model resulted in a reconstruction that is much more consistent with the current understanding of heterobranch+ phylogeny. Notably, this analysis recovered Valvatoidea and Orbitestelloidea in a polytomy with a clade including all other heterobranchs, highlighting these taxa as important to understanding early heterobranch evolution.
