California-Bred Flashback Royal Owl On December 18, 1971, Royal Owl, a son of Crazy Kid, won the $100,000 California Juvenile Stakes for two-year-olds at Bay Meadows Racecourse, with Master Ribot second and C. B. Carm third in a field of seven. Royal Owl was trained by John Canty and ridden by William Shoemaker. He ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41 4/5 on a fast track and won by 3 1/2 lengths at odds of 2-5. Royal Owl was the fifth of 10 foals out of the Duplicator mare Mama Mouse, who also produced stakes winners Carang and Windy Mama and the stakes-placed Mrs. Joe F. The California Juvenile was Royal Owl’s fifth win in six starts. He also won the grade I Charles H. Strub Stakes, grade II San Carlos Handicap and Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes among a total of seven stakes victories, placed in seven others, including the Santa Anita Derby and Californian Stakes, and finished his career with 12 wins in 37 starts and earnings of $509,462.
