Nationalist Crossroads and Crosshairs: on External and Internal Sources of Albanian and Serbian National Mythology
Nationalist Crossroads and Crosshairs: On External and Internal Sources of Albanian and Serbian National Mythology Matvey Lomonosov Department of Sociology McGill University, Montreal June 2018 A dissertation submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology © Matvey Lomonosov, 2018 Abstract This dissertation employs comparative historical methods to investigate the development of Albanian and Serbian national identity over the last two centuries. More narrowly, it traces the emergence and evolution of two foundational national myths: the story of the Illyrian origins of the Albanian nation and the narrative of the 1389 Battle of Kosovo. The study focuses on micro- and meso-level processes, the life course of mythmakers and specific historical situations. For this, it relies on archival data from Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia, as well as a wide body of published primary and secondary historical sources. The dissertation is composed of four separate articles. In the first article, I offer evidence that the Kosovo myth, which is often seen as a “crucial” supporting case for ethno-symbolist theory, is a modern ideological construct. For evidence, the article focuses on temporal, geographical and cultural ruptures in the supposedly long-standing “medieval Kosovo legacy” and the way the narrative was promoted among South Slavs in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It finds that Serbian-speaking diaspora intellectuals from the Habsburg Empire and the governments in Belgrade and Cetinje played crucial roles imparting the Kosovo myth to the Balkan masses. Thus, it is hard to account for the rise of national identities and local conflicts in the Balkans without a closer look at foreign intervention and the history of states and institutions. -

The purpose of this paper is to provide a short overview of the resources related to research in medieval history in Serbia. Medioevo; secoli XIX-XXI; Serbia; storiografia; didattica. Middle Ages; 19th-21th Century; Serbia; Historiography; Teaching. 1. Introduction and purpose Medieval past of Serbia was one of the core interests of many scholars of Serbian origin already from the 18th century. The awareness of the once strong medieval Serbian kingdom and empire has been mostly present among Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy. First examples of 18th century historians, i. e. writers who much dealt with Serbian medieval history were count Đorđe Branković, Jovan Rajić and Pavle Julinac. It is important to say that in that time history has not been established yet as a separate science with its critical methodological approach to sources, but Serbs had a very prominent intellec- tuals and scholars, such are the aforementioned three, who left exceptionally important marks in studying medieval past of the Serbian people. Since the beginning of the critical historiography (mid 19th century), Serbi- an researchers and first historians have dealt with medieval history of Serbia, Serbian lands and of its’ neighboring countries, like for instance Byzantium, Ottoman empire, Hungary, Wallachia, Bulgaria, Venice and so on. -

Ethnoconfessional Nationalism in the Balkans: Analysis, Manifestations and Management
Ethnoconfessional Nationalism in the Balkans: Analysis, Manifestations and Management Gordon N. Bardos Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 ©2013 Gordon N. Bardos All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Ethnoconfessional Nationalism in the Balkans: Analysis, Manifestations and Managements Gordon N. Bardos For at least the past two hundred years, ethnoconfessional nationalism has been the most powerful ideology and force shaping political and social developments in southeastern Europe. This dissertation argues that Balkan ethnoconfessional nationalism is such an important element in southeastern Europe because it is a collective, chronic and non-economic phenomenon which transcends other political ideologies, generations, or socio-economic classes. As such, conventional Marxist-based approaches to understanding the phenomenon of nationalism, and their intellectual descendants such as the more materially-based forms of social constructivism and instrumentalism, consistently fail to both understand and predict its appeal and success in southeastern Europe. The dissertation concludes by arguing that there are severe limitations to the extent to which outsiders can manage the outcome of ethnoconfessional conflicts; hence, in terms of policy prescriptions, the analysis provided in this dissertation argues for a cautious and modest understanding of the extent to which intervention by the international community can transform Balkans -
