To make a booking call 052 7465290 or check out: www.parsonsgreen.ie The Greenway: Starting in Dungarvan The Waterford Greenway, also known locally as the Déise Greenway is a Rail trail in County Waterford, it is used for cycling and hiking. It opened in March 2017, on what was originally the Mallow/Waterford railway line, and forms part of EuroVelo 1 route. The Waterford Greenway runs in both directions from the city of Waterford and runs for 46km through gentle green countryside to the coastal town of Dungarvan. This is an approximate 40 minutes from the hotel, and an ideal location to hire a bike & enjoy the fresh costal air. St Patrick’s Well: Clonmel This picturesque site is located a short distance from the hotel. It is an old religious site situated in a sheltered glen where a large volume of spring water continuously wells up from underground. The church was built in the seventeenth century, but there are traces of an even older building. Inside the walls is the tomb of Nicholas White of Clonmel who died in 1622. At the centre of the small lake is a weathered Celtic Cross which dates from early Christian times in Ireland. I had just finished my school-going days and had commenced to assist my father in his hardware business in my native town of Carrick-on-Suir. There was then no unit of the Irish Volunteers in Carrick-on-Suir.. There were, however, in the town a. few nationally minded people, such as Dr. Murphy, Maurice Hickey and some members of the Dowley families, who had broken away from the Redmond ite Party and the Irish National Volunteers when the split took place in that body a few years before, but, as far as I am no effort was made to establish an aware, Irish Volun6eer company. On the other hand, Carrick-on-Suir held amongst the towns of Ireland the unenviable distinction of, in proportion to its population, giving the second highest percentage of recruits to the British Army.

    The O’Keeffes of Glenough by Robert O’Keeffe Nora O’Keeffe was born in Glenough, Rossmore Co. Tipperary in 1885, and was one of 12 children. The family were steeped in the nationalist tradition and her father, Dan, was a Nationalist Justice of Peace and a respected nationalist figure locally. There are uncorroborated stories of involvement in the Fenian outbreak of 1867 (Fr Denis Matthew O’Keeffe’s history). Nora emigrated to the US in 1909 and worked as a typist/stenographer. She appears to have returned to Ireland in 1918/9 along with her brother Patrick. During her time in the US she appears to have met Margaret Skinnider with whom it is thought she had a life long same sex relationship. (McAuliffe) She became active with Cumann na mBan and was among those listed in Bureau of Military History statements as having dispersed the gelignite from the Sologheadbeg ambush across the Brigade area. The younger members of the family seem to have immersed themselves in the national struggle at this time. This was probably due in no small part to the presence in the locality of staunch Republicans such as Fr Matt Ryan of Knockavilla, Eamonn O’Duibhir of Ballagh and the Irish teacher, Padraig Breathnach. The house at Glenough was used as a safe house and also played host to brigade meetings. The “Big Four” of Robinson, Breen, Treacy and Hogan were regular visitors as was Ernie O’Malley. O’Malley mentions the family in his autobiography “On another man’s wound” and also in his book “Raids and Rallies”.

    CLONMEL TOWN WALLS CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT PLAN This project was supported by the Heritage Council under the Irish Walled Towns Network Fund 2009 MARGARET QUINLAN ARCHITECTS 120 Rock Road Booterstown Co. Dublin October 2009 Executive Summary The Clonmel town walls are of great significance historically and archaeologically. They help to create a distinctive urban quarter of quality and potential. In the course of preparation of the plan, it has emerged that the traces of another tower on the north wall survive. A new alignment for the early town wall circuit is proposed, based on analysis of the fabric. Measures will be put in place for an improved understanding and awareness and for enhanced access. Achieving that aim has the following elements: • Formulating a clear vision for the future of the walls • Establishing a comprehensive programme of repair and maintenance • Ensuring the protection of archaeological potential around the historic perimeter • Adopting integrated measures for the presentation of the monument • Exploiting the potential of the extant walls to enhance enjoyment of the public realm of the town by adopting integrated measures to increase knowledge and awareness. • This includes a proposal for access to one tower and for a new route from Gordon Place.
