Music Haven • Erector Square • 315 Peck Street, Building 5, Second Floor Mailing Address: Music Haven, 315 Peck Street, Box A 10, New Haven, CT 06513 ATITLE Letter from the Executive Director “Music Haven gave me a home even when home wasn’t home for me.” – Music Haven student If you stop by on a Friday afternoon, you’ll hear it before you even open the door. The discerning ear will pick out a little Britten, some Twinkle, perhaps some solfege coming from Music Theory class, accented by the the sound of snacks and the zipping of backpacks. Open the door and you’ll see it: all life and love and a glorious mess of beautiful young faces and instrument cases in a light-filled expanse of music-making that fills an entire converted factory floor. This place in which A.C. Gilbert once manufactured “Erector Set” toys--introduced in 1913 as “Educational, Instructive, and Amusing”—is filled with young people engaged in variations on that same theme. They are making much more than music, and the space we now have the pleasure of calling home is more than classrooms and rehearsal spaces. It is a true haven. Our students told us as much when they explained what keeps them coming back, despite the many hours of hard work we require of them each week. “Music Haven was a safe haven for me.” (violist, 18) “It gave me a way to express myself in a new way. It also helps me not to be stressed.” (cellist, 13) “It makes me a better person. I love it very much.” (violinist, 9) “It’s like a family.” (violinist, 14) “I feel like I’m at home and I feel really comfortable.” (cellist, 11) There is no shortage of danger, hate, distrust, and fear waiting for our kids when they step out into the world. At a time when those who seek refuge or opportunity are being turned away, turned in, or torn from their families, we have a space of love, freedom, and inclusion, built around a very simple form— the string quartet. The very structure of our new space exists to protect this rare thing in which people must listen carefully to each other, respond with both sensitivity and courage, adapt to each other’s needs, offer support, and stop to marvel when someone is on a roll. Each voice must carry its own part knowing the full integrity of this structure depends on it. Or as one of our 9-year-olds put it, “Always take responsibility and try your best.” In June 2018, our first group of students graduated. All have gone on to college. They couldn’t have imagined as tiny 6-year-olds first feeling the weight of an instrument in their tiny hands what they’d grow to create together. It’s only because they, their families, their teachers, and our supporters have stuck with it over so many years that we have the Music Haven we have today, in a space of our own where we feel safe, welcomed, valued, heard, and free to make music, make mistakes, take chances, try Front Cover: Jeanna’e and Damani, 2018 Music Haven Graduates. again, or ask for help. Everyone should have a place like that. 100% of the students in our first graduating cohort were accepted to four-year colleges. OUR PROGRAMS ONE-ON-ONE LESSONS All students receive weekly Private Lessons with one of our Resident Musicians. They come together for Studio Classes, celebrations, recitals, and potluck dinners, building a community and strong relationships with their peers and teachers over many years. In our new rigorous Music Theory Program, we use a mix of aural, visual, and kinesthetic methods to teach music fundamentals so that each student can develop fluency in his/her own way. In Time Travel, our Music History class, students travel through time and space through music, listening, locating places of origin on the globe, journaling, and drawing what they hear. High school-aged Music Haven Fellows are trained to assist group classes and serve as mentors and practice buddies to our younger students. They also have opportunities for college/concert trips and special workshops and events. ENSEMBLES Discovery Orchestra is Music Haven’s beginner ensemble and introduces students to the fundamentals of string playing. Discovery Orchestra students also receive homework help, healthy snacks, and participate in all Music Haven concerts and events. Before Music Haven students are ready for Harmony in Action, they play in a variety of Beginning and Intermediate Ensembles. They rehearse weekly, learn and play level-appropriate repertoire, build music-reading and musicianship skills, and learn to work and play together with other young musicians. Our Student Chamber Groups are for intermediate to advanced students. They play in concerts throughout the year, rehearse weekly, and are coached by members of the Haven String Quartet. The Quartet Apprenticeship Program provides training and opportunities to play professional paid engagements. Harmony in Action is Music Haven’s advanced student chamber orchestra. Harmony in Action students also plan social action projects, engage with guest speakers, participate in workshops, and attend concert trips, as well as an annual retreat. • Visual Grounded Analysis: Developing and Testing a Method for Preliminary Visual Research
Visual Grounded Analysis: Developing and testing a method for Preliminary Visual Research Lisa Cerutti PhD A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design London Metropolitan University i June 2017 v II ABSTRACT Approaching a new design project by performing preliminary visual research is a common practice in educational and studio settings, particularly in Jewellery and Fashion Design. Collecting images around a given subject or theme — for better understanding its visual traits, or for future reference — could be seen as the counterpart, in visual terms, of a literature search. However, ‘visual research’ is an expression often used rather vaguely for indicating a spectrum of unstructured methodological approaches, whose procedures and underlying assumptions tend to remain unexplained, undisclosed or unquestioned in everyday studio practice. When creative practice becomes an integral part of academic research, though, there is an increased need for rigor and explicitness regarding every aspect about it, including all the work preliminary to it. This research aims to develop and test a systematic method for conducting and documenting visual research in the preliminary stages of the design process, contributing to new knowledge in the form of a new visual method, also applicable as a design tool. A reflection on the vagueness and implicitness of the Intuitive Approach (IA) to visual research adopted in the initial stage of this PhD motivated the search for an alternative method that could make transparent and rigorous the taken-for-granted, subjective assumptions behind the research initially conducted.

  • The ELO Story
The ELO Story Jeff Lynne was born in industrial Birmingham, England, on December 30, 1947. He grew up in the then- new Shard End City Council housing estate, a high-density residential development built on the eastern edge of the city right after the Second World War, with his parents Philip and Nancy.1 He had a brother and two sisters.2 Lynne’s grandparents in his father’s side were vaudevillian performers.3 More than thirty years later, Lynne would pay tribute to his birthplace in the ELO song “All Over the World,” which mentions Shard End alongside other cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rio de Janiero, and Tokyo. Lynne was a Brummie, a nickname for those blessed with the notoriously thick local Birmingham accent.4 Brummie is shorthand for Brummagem, the popular West Midlands way of pronouncing Birmingham.5 Brummie also has an unfortunate alternative dictionary definition: “counterfeit, cheap, and showy.”6 The accent, which not everyone in the city shares, has even been described as representing the least intelligent dialect in the British Isles.7 Lynne grew up listening to Del Shannon, Roy Orbison,8 Chuck Berry, and The Shadows records.9 His parents did not always approve. About Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely” playing on the radio, Jeff said “[t]hey were complaining that it was too sexy, or something, but that voice just made the hairs go up on my neck.”10 At age thirteen, Lynne attended a concert by Del Shannon at Birmingham Town Hall, and from that point on dedicated his life to music.11 He noticed immediately that live performances

He fell into fandom upon purchasing Prince's “1999” in 1982 and realised a lifelong dream when hired as a video editor at Paisley Park in 2001. Currently completing a BA at Antioch University-Los Angeles in Liberal Studies and Queer Studies, Chris is a Queer, male-bodied person who also worked as a film producer assistant, Program Manager at an LGBTQ scholarship organization, and currently in a public library. He counts sharing a spin class with Her Madgesty as a religious experience and life high point. New Power, Sexuality and Emancipation: The revolutionary queerness of Prince through a Foucauldian lens. From arriving on the 1980’s music scene in bikini briefs, eyeliner and high heels, singing songs about incest and masturbation, to a fight for emancipation from recording industry contracts, Prince consistently held the power dynamics of sexuality and domination as key to liberation from the binds of what French philosopher and social theorist Michel Foucault termed ‘government of individualization’. Prince demonstrated his full-throttled approach to creating art not only as objects in the form of music, motion pictures, and videos, but as a mindful daily practice of living art and resistance. Prince’s vibrant life force enlivened Foucault’s belief that, “we should not have to refer the creative activity of somebody to the kind of relation he has to himself, but should relate the kind of relation one has to oneself to a creative activity.” For Prince, power also derived from his refusal to conform -- demanding to produce his debut album, creating side projects as additional creative outlets, changing his name to a symbol, and creating a pioneering web- distribution platform.
