“Music Haven gave me a home even when home wasn’t home for me.” – Music Haven student

If you stop by on a Friday afternoon, you’ll hear it before you even open the door. The discerning ear will pick out a little Britten, some Twinkle, perhaps some solfege coming from Music Theory class, accented by the the sound of snacks and the zipping of backpacks. Open the door and you’ll see it: all life and love and a glorious mess of beautiful young faces and instrument cases in a light-filled expanse of music-making that fills an entire converted factory floor. This place in which A.C. Gilbert once manufactured “Erector Set” toys--introduced in 1913 as “Educational, Instructive, and Amusing”—is filled with young people engaged in variations on that same theme. They are making much more than music, and the space we now have the pleasure of calling home is more than classrooms and rehearsal spaces. It is a true haven.

Our students told us as much when they explained what keeps them coming back, despite the many hours of hard work we require of them each week. “Music Haven was a safe haven for me.” (violist, 18) “It gave me a way to express myself in a new way. It also helps me not to be stressed.” (cellist, 13) “It makes me a better person. I love it very much.” (violinist, 9) “It’s like a family.” (violinist, 14) “I feel like I’m at home and I feel really comfortable.” (cellist, 11)

There is no shortage of danger, hate, distrust, and fear waiting for our kids when they step out into the world. At a time when those who seek refuge or opportunity are being turned away, turned in, or torn from their families, we have a space of love, freedom, and inclusion, built around a very simple form— the string quartet. The very structure of our new space exists to protect this rare thing in which people must listen carefully to each other, respond with both sensitivity and courage, adapt to each other’s needs, offer support, and stop to marvel when someone is on a roll. Each voice must carry its own part knowing the full integrity of this structure depends on it. Or as one of our 9-year-olds put it, “Always take responsibility and try your best.”

In June 2018, our first group of students graduated. All have gone on to college. They couldn’t have imagined as tiny 6-year-olds first feeling the weight of an instrument in their tiny hands what they’d grow to create together. It’s only because they, their families, their teachers, and our supporters have stuck with it over so many years that we have the Music Haven we have today, in a space of our own where we feel safe, welcomed, valued, heard, and free to make music, make mistakes, take chances, try Front Cover: Jeanna’e and Damani, 2018 Music Haven Graduates. again, or ask for help. Everyone should have a place like that. 100% of the students in our first graduating cohort were accepted to four-year colleges.

THE MISSION Music Haven empowers and connects young people through exceptional tuition-free music education, mentoring, and performance by our resident musicians in the heart of New Haven, giving all kids a chance to play. OUR PROGRAMS

ONE-ON-ONE LESSONS

All students receive weekly Private Lessons with one of our Resident Musicians. They come together for Studio Classes, celebrations, recitals, and potluck dinners, building a community and strong relationships with their peers and teachers over many years.

In our new rigorous Music Theory Program, we use a mix of aural, visual, and kinesthetic methods to teach music fundamentals so that each student can develop fluency in his/her own way.

In Time Travel, our Music History class, students travel through time and space through music, listening, locating places of origin on the globe, journaling, and drawing what they hear.

High school-aged Music Haven Fellows are trained to assist group classes and serve as mentors and practice buddies to our younger students. They also have opportunities for college/concert trips and special workshops and events. ENSEMBLES

Discovery Orchestra is Music Haven’s beginner ensemble and introduces students to the fundamentals of string playing. Discovery Orchestra students also receive homework help, healthy snacks, and participate in all Music Haven concerts and events.

Before Music Haven students are ready for Harmony in Action, they play in a variety of Beginning and Intermediate Ensembles. They rehearse weekly, learn and play level-appropriate repertoire, build music-reading and musicianship skills, and learn to work and play together with other young musicians.

Our Student Chamber Groups are for intermediate to advanced students. They play in concerts throughout the year, rehearse weekly, and are coached by members of the Haven String Quartet. The Quartet Apprenticeship Program provides training and opportunities to play professional paid engagements.

Harmony in Action is Music Haven’s advanced student chamber orchestra. Harmony in Action students also plan social action projects, engage with guest speakers, participate in workshops, and attend concert trips, as well as an annual retreat. Music Haven 2017-2018 In Review

New Haven Promise Zone

To enroll in Music Haven, students must live in one of the city’s Promise Zone neighborhoods - a designation set by the federal government to identify areas of higher poverty in order to, in the words of former HUD Secretary Castro, “bring the power of partnership to a whole new level as we seek to bring opportunity to neighborhoods long locked out of their area’s prosperity.” TITLETAKE A LOOK INSIDE OUR NEW HOME... Featured in the New York Times and on NPR, and sought after for both their command on the concert stage and their mastery as teachers, Haven String Quartet has been hailed as “the nation’s premiere community-based string quartet.”

The four members of the quartet represent the world’s top conservatories and bring outstanding chamber music performances to New Haven neighborhoods and throughout the region with a full season of concerts, recitals, educational workshops, and performances for diverse audiences in public spaces, including recent performances at Sprague Hall, Merkin Hall, as part of Manchester Music Festival, and across New England.

The Quartet serves as the permanent quartet-in-residence and teaching faculty for Music Haven, and spearheads the organization’s tuition-free strings program for youth, which has been recognized as a top 50 after-school arts program in the country by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities six times. Each member of the quartet teaches a full studio of 15-20 Music Haven students in private lessons, group classes, studio classes, chamber groups, and an advanced chamber orchestra.

“Few classical ensembles are more attuned to the specific environment and the circumstances of each concert. Few are more accessible, or more responsive to the needs of the communities they serve.” - The Daily Nutmeg TITLE

TITLEHAVEN STRING QUARTET 2018-2019 CHAMBER SERIES

October 13th, 2018 From Prussia with Love Leoš Janáček, String Quartet No. 2, “Intimate Letters” (1928) Antonín Dvořák, String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, “American” (1893) Join the HSQ at their first concert of the 2018-2019 season as they explore two Czech masterworks, Antonín Dvořák’s “American” String Quartet, and Leoš Janáček’s “Intimate Letters.” Dvořák’s quartet, composed during a visit to the United States in 1893, overflows with joyous, folk-inspired melodies and imagery from his travels across the US and is one of the most cherished quartets in the repertoire. Leoš Janáček, known for his inventive, colorful harmonic language and declamatory style, spent the later part of his life infatuated with the much younger Kamila Stösslová. While the true depth of their relationship is unknown, over 700 letters between the two survive, and Janáček turns his passion for his muse into musical genius in the second string quartet, titled by the composer “Intimate Letters.” The work, meant to be a reflection of his relationship with Kamila, is described by the composer as, “…a work as if carved out of living flesh. I think that I won’t write a more profound or truer one.”

December 8th, 2018 Restless Melodies Erica Ball, “w(e)aving” for String Quartet (2010) Sergei Prokofiev, String Quartet No. 2 in F Major, Op. 92 (1941) Béla Bartók, String Quartet No. 6, Sz. 114 (1939) This HSQ concert features two pillars of the 20th century quartet literature, as well as a wonderfully evocative composition by American composer Erica Ball. After Germany broke their non-aggression pact and invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Prokofiev and many other artists were evacuated to the Caucasus, where they came across a rich world of folk music native to the region. these novel folk melodies, Prokofiev gives us a quartet that is equally defiant, sweet, whimsical, and forceful. Bartók’s haunting sixth quartet comes from a time of extreme stress and anxiety for the composer; as Europe churned towards conflict in the late 1930s and with his mother extremely ill, Bartók chose to stay in Budapest with her through the end of her life even though he was frequently in conflict with the pro-Nazi leanings of his native Hungary. Much of his anxiety and deep sadness at the loss of his mother permeates the sixth quartet - one of the last works of Bartók - including a twisted, limping military march; a sneering, sarcastic burlesque; and a profoundly mournful final movement.

March 30th, 2019 HSQ and Friends: Piano Masterworks Andrius Žlabys, Movement for String Quartet and Piano (2016) Johannes Brahms, Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, Op. 8 (1854) Cesar Franck, Piano Quintet in F Minor (1879) The Haven String Quartet will be joined by Music Haven Resident haven string HSQ & FRIENDS: Violinist Patrick Doane and quartet renowned Grammy-nominated Piano Masterworks pianist Andrius Žlabys for their third Saturday, March 30, 2019 series concert featuring the soaring and timeless Brahms B major Piano Trio, the explosive Franck Piano Quintet, as well as the East Coast Premiere of Andrius Žlabys’ “Movement for String Quartet and Piano,” a work dedicated to the victims of the war in Ukraine. Written when the composer was a mere 20 years old, Brahms’ B Major Piano trio comes from a period of great personal and musical growth; the composer recently befriended Robert and Clara Schumann as well as famed composers Berlioz and Liszt, and had begun traveling around Europe presenting his compositions to great success. Known for its soaring lines, exuberance, and deep beauty, Brahms returned to the work some 35 years later with thorough revisions, and the trio is a true blend of Brahms’ youthful vigor and masterful nuance. Franck’s Piano Quintet in F Minor, dedicated to his dear friend and composer Saint-Saëns, is full of fiery drama, and is one of Franck’s most frequently performed pieces. Lauded at its premiere, critics hailed the work for its “torrid emotional power,” and its “disturbing vitality.” Unitarian Society of New Haven, 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, CT Tickets: $25; $10 for students and USNH members Purchase Tickets Online at havenstringquartet.com TITLE

May 11th, 2019 Vigor and Wisdom: Mendelssohn and Brahms Felix Mendelssohn, String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44, No. 1 (1838) Johannes Brahms, String Quintet in G Major, Op. 111 (1890) Felix Mendelssohn, String Octet in E-Flat Major, Op. 20 (1825)

For the final concert of the series, The Haven String Quartet will explore two works by the Romantic masters Brahms and Mendelssohn as well as share the stage with several graduating senior Music Haven students for a movement of Mendelssohn’s exuberant Octet, written when the composer was a mere 16 years old. Mendelssohn’s Quartet in D Major, Op. 44 No. 1, in contrast to the octet, highlights Mendelssohn’s later style: his energetic themes and development, his puckish scherzos and incidental music, and his memorable and poignant lyricism. The concert will also feature Music Haven Resident Violinist Patrick Doane on Brahms’ Viola Quintet in G Major, Op. 111, a masterwork known for its soaring opening cello melody, orchestral textures, melancholic slow movement, and folk-inspired finale. Though Brahms went on to write several more chamber and piano works, the quintet in G Major was intended to be his last.

Central to the core of the Haven String Quartet is its unique relationship with Music Haven. The musicians in the Quartet are committed to providing exceptional instruction to underserved New Haven youth in their roles as full-time teaching faculty – and are equally invested in the individual needs of each child. Long- term relationships with their students and families through years of mentoring and partnership are a hallmark of this award-winning program.

Committed to the mission of accessibility, Community Concerts have long been a mainstay of HSQ, with performances in public spaces including city libraries, group homes, and the Festival of Arts and Ideas.

HSQ mentors public school youth orchestras from the city of Bridgeport in a collaborative program with Music for Youth, designed to create dialogue and collaboration between middle school musicians.

The members of the Haven String Quartet bring their passion and skill to the broader community through in-school Assemblies and Classroom Programs, weaving interactive learning, story-telling, and educational substance. HSQ connects musical ideas with academic, social, and cultural learning concepts. Haven String Quartet also hosts the Adult Chamber Music Seminar which provides proficient amateur musicians with an opportunity to rehearse and play with the Quartet and others who share their passion.

The Quartet also explores the concepts of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving methods with Workshops for Adults which focus on illustrations of verbal and non-verbal communication within the quartet and explorations of emotions, textures, and imagery inspired by music.

For the past nine years the Haven String Quartet and the Yale University Art Gallery have collaborated on Playing Images, a concert series that is free and open to the public. These interactive sessions are held in the gallery and connect viewing a work of art with live performance.
