Signature:……………………………………… 3 Summary Due to their characteristic themes (such as „perverse‟ desire and monstrosity) and form (incoherence and excess), exploitation films are often celebrated as inherently subversive or transgressive. I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation.

ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR IN FILM MUSIC: A SOCIOPHOBIC ANALYSIS OF ZOMBIE FILM SOUNDTRACKS Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Dr. Patrick Warfield, Musicology The horror film soundtrack is a complex web of narratological, ethnographic, and semiological factors all related to the social tensions intimated by a film. This study examines four major periods in the zombie’s film career—the Voodoo zombie of the 1930s and 1940s, the invasion narratives of the late 1960s, the post-apocalyptic survivalist fantasies of the 1970s and 1980s, and the modern post-9/11 zombie—to track how certain musical sounds and styles are indexed with the content of zombie films. Two main musical threads link the individual films’ characterization of the zombie and the setting: Othering via different types of musical exoticism, and the use of sonic excess to pronounce sociophobic themes. • The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema
The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Ekky Imanjaya Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2016 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally.

ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES OCTOBER – DECEMBER PRESS LISTINGS OCTOBER 2013 PRESS LISTINGS MIX NYC PRESENTS: Tommy Goetz A BRIDE FOR BRENDA 1969, 62 min, 35mm MIX NYC, the producer of the NY Queer Experimental Film Festival, presents a special screening of sexploitation oddity A BRIDE FOR BRENDA, a lesbian-themed grindhouse cheapie set against the now-tantalizing backdrop of late-60s Manhattan. Shot in Central Park, Times Square, the Village, and elsewhere, A BRIDE FOR BRENDA narrates (quite literally – the story is told via female-voiced omniscient narration rather than dialogue) the experiences of NYC-neophyte Brenda as she moves into an apartment with Millie and Jane. These apparently unremarkable roommates soon prove themselves to be flesh-hungry lesbians, spying on Brenda as she undresses, attempting to seduce her, and making her forget all about her paramour Nick (and his partners in masculinity). As the narrator intones, “Once a young girl has been loved by a lesbian, it’s difficult to feel satisfaction from a man again.” –Thurs, Oct 3 at 7:30. TAYLOR MEAD MEMORIAL SCREENING Who didn’t love Taylor Mead? Irrepressible and irreverent, made of silly putty yet always sharp- witted, he was an underground icon in the Lower East Side and around the world. While THE FLOWER THIEF put him on the map, and Andy Warhol lifted him to Superstardom, Taylor truly made his mark in the incredibly vast array of films and videos he made with notables and nobodies alike. A poster child of the beat era, Mead was a scene-stealer who was equally vibrant on screen, on stage, or in a café reading his hilarious, aphoristic poetry.

  • Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film at the National Film Theatre
Japan Foundation Supported Project Wild Japan: Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film at the National Film Theatre Date: 3 – 30 November 2006 Venue: National Film Theatre, London The season of Japanese films shown at the NFT in London, entitled 'Wild Japan: Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film' was an extraordinary exploration of genre film-making in Japan in the 1960s and 1970s. This period saw many young directors venting their disapproval and frustration with the then conservative nature of many Japanese cultural and social mores. This film season was a fiesta for the eyes, a magic-lantern for the mind and a provocative challenge to the sensibilities. This season, moreover, was a unique opportunity to seize those rare jewels of radical Japanese cinema. Certainly the mood and tone of the season highlight the connecting points of Japanese and Western film-culture, with audiences for this festival usually made up of Western men, middle-aged and intellectual, and some independent-minded and culturally sophisticated Japanese females, teachers, academics, and students. The films in the season remain highly pertinent to today’s post-modern world of malaise and materialism, in that the films are a reminder of the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema (the 1960s) and the hopes and achievements of the new generation of 1964 (e.g. The Tokyo Olympics and Shinkansen) - and how these ideals no longer remain in Japan or the West. The unrestrained energy and spontaneous passion of these films are only equaled by their iconic beauty. The highlights of the season were the following films: Ito Shunya’s Female Convict Scorpion (1972) is an exploitation classic, an art house wonder and feminist movie all flowing into one - incandescent and daring too.

Utilizing sukeban the subversive space of exploitation cinema, Pinky Violence films provide alternative exploitation film constructions of gender and female sexuality through the character of the sukeban: sexuality the girl gang boss. An evaluation of both the cultural and the historical factors gender in Japanese that led to the development of Pinky Violence films demonstrates how the changing film post-war society indelibly influenced new iterations of gender for Japanese women. female transgression An assessment of the tropes of the films and an analysis of the ideology behind them pinpoints Pinky Violence as an unvalued, and hence understudied, area in transgressive Japanese cinema. By doing so, the article ultimately attempts to position Pinky Violence films as a valuable source of untapped material that can offer a unique insight into constructions of gender in Japanese cinema. Japanese cinema in the 1970s saw an explosion of Pinky Violence films: exploitation films built around soft-core pornography and sadomasochistic themes. A potent combination of exploitation film aesthetics and transgressive images, Pinky Violence are female-driven narratives focused around teenage girl gangs, soft-core pornography, social commentary and radical 37 JJKC_3.1_Kozma_37-44.indd 37 12/13/11 12:19:55 PM Alicia Kozma 1.
