THE ANTHROPOCENE: THRESHOLD 8 David Christian is a distinguished professor of history at Macquarie University in Austra- lia and the co-founder, with Bill Gates, of The Big History Project, which has built a free online syllabus on the history of the universe and is taught in schools all over the world. He is also co- creator of Macquarie University Big History School, which provides online courses in Big History for primary and high school students. He received his PhD from the University of Oxford. ARTICLE .1 Macro-Perspectives beyond the World System Joseph Voros Swinburne University of Technology Australia Abstract This paper continues a discussion begun in an earlier article on nesting macro-social perspectives to also consider and explore macro-perspectives beyond the level of the current world system and what insights they might reveal for the future of humankind. Key words: Macrohistory, Human expansion into space, Extra-terrestrial civilisations Introduction This paper continues a train of thought begun in an earlier paper (Voros 2006) where an approach to macro-social analysis based on the idea of "nesting" social-analytical perspectives was described and demonstrated (the essence of which, for convenience, is briefly summarised here). In that paper, essential use was made of a typology of social-analytical perspectives proposed by Johan Galtung (1997b), who suggested that human systems could be viewed or studied at three main levels of analysis: the level of the individual person; the level of social systems; and the level of world systems. Distinctions can be made between different foci of study. The focus may be on the stages and causes of change through time (termed diachronic), or it could be at some specific point in time (termed synchronic). As well, the focus may be on a specific single case (termed idiographic), in contrast to seeking regularities, patterns, or generalised "laws" (termed nomo- thetic). In this way, there are four main types of perspectives found at any particular level of analy- sis. THE DETERRENT EFFECT OF THE DEATH PENALTY? EVIDENCE FROM BRITISH COMMUTATIONS DURING WORLD WAR I Daniel L. Chen∗ Abstract During World War I, the British military condemned over 3,000 soldiers to death, but only executed 12% of them; the others received commuted sentences, unbeknownst to soldiers at the time. I verify that variation in commutations and executions is consistent with a random process. Using this result, I identify the effect of executions on subsequent desertions. There is limited evidence that executing deserters deterred absences, while executing Irish soldiers, regardless of the crime, spurred absences, particularly Irish absences. DEEP FUTURE of BIG HISTORY: Cultural Evolution, Technoculture, and Omega Civilization Cadell Last Global Brain Institute Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels) http://cadelllast.com [email protected] (v1.3., September 22, 2014) ABSTRACT: The study of big history attempts to identify major trends and processes throughout the development and evolution of the local universe. Big history has allowed for the integration of many disparate academic subjects, revealing a science and art of studying the emergence of complexity, the relation between evolutionary processes, and the cosmic context of the human experience. Current big historical data and theory identifies “Three Eras” of ordered and organizing complexity regimes: Physical, Biological, and Cultural Eras. These Eras change as a consequence of “Three Evolutionary Processes”: Physical, Biological, and Cultural Evolution. Contemporary science has developed the necessary tools to extrapolate and make predictions about the future of both the Physical and Biological Eras of evolution, but the potential future of the Cultural Era of evolution remains mysterious, yet intriguing. Cosmological theory predicts that all Eras will eventually end in thermodynamic equilibrium, or “heat death”. However, throughout the history of the cosmos, complexity and order have steadily increased in our local region of the universe, drifting further and further from simplicity and thermodynamic equilibrium in the process. Physical systems achieve higher order through gravitationally influenced energy flows; and living systems achieve higher organization through an information-based regulation of energy flows. Both processes contribute to the cosmic evolutionary trends of increased material integration, variation, and space-time compression. Cosmic evolution is fundamentally unified throughout this complexification process, manifesting as physicochemical, biochemical, and biocultural evolution, respectively. -

Galactic-scale macro-engineering: Looking for signs of other intelligent species, as an exercise in hope for our own * Joseph Voros Senior Lecturer in Strategic Foresight Faculty of Business & Law, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia Abstract If we consider Big History as simply ‘our’ example of the process of cosmic evolution playing out, then we can seek to broaden our view of our possible fate as a species by asking questions about what paths or trajectories other species’ own versions of Big History might take or have taken. This paper explores the broad outlines of possible scenarios for the evolution of long-lived intelligent engineering species—scenarios which might have been part of another species’ own Big History story, or which may yet lie ahead in our own distant future. A sufficiently long-lived engineering-oriented species may decide to undertake a program of macro-engineering projects that might eventually lead to a re-engineered galaxy so altered that its artificiality may be detectable from Earth. We consider activities that lead ultimately to a galactic structure consisting of a central inner core surrounded by a more distant ring of stars separated by a relatively sparser ‘gap’, where star systems and stellar materials may have been removed, ‘lifted’ or turned into Dyson Spheres. When one looks to the sky, one finds that such galaxies do indeed exist—including the beautiful ringed galaxy known as ‘Hoag’s Object’ (PGC 54559) in the constellation Serpens. This leads us to pose the question: Is Hoag’s Object an example of galaxy-scale macro-engineering? And this suggests a program of possible observational activities and theoretical explorations, several of which are presented here, that could be carried out in order to begin to investigate this beguiling question. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract. The Huon Bowerbird Amblyornis germana, recently elevated to species status, is endemic to montane forests on the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. The polygynous males in the Yopno Urawa Som Conservation Area build distinctive maypole bowers. We document for the first time the nest, egg, incubation behaviour, and parental care of this species. Three of the five nests found were built in tree-fern crowns. Nest structure and the single-egg clutch were similar to those of MacGregor’s Bowerbird A. macgregoriae. Only the female Huon Bowerbird incubated. Mean length of incubation sessions was 30.9 minutes and the number of sessions daily was 18. Diurnal incubation constancy over a 12-hour day was 74%, compared with a mean of ~70% in six other members of the bowerbird family. The downy nestling resembled that of MacGregor’s Bowerbird. This path-breaking book is divided into three parts: • Part I—outlines and explains the entire history of life on earth, by developing a fully dynamic model, not just of genetic change, but of the broader wave-like fluctuations of biological activity. Central to this is the dynamic role of the individual operating in a competitive environment. • Part II—provides a critical review of current interpretations about the course of history and the forces driving it. • Part III—develops an entirely new interpretation of the dynamics of human society over the past 2 million years. It analyses how individuals in a competitive environment generate growth by investing in the dynamic strategies of family multiplication, conquest, commerce, and technology. It argues that the rise and fall of societies is an outcome of the development and exhaustion of these strategies. The author also employs his dynamic strategy model to discuss future outcomes for human society, controversially arguing that far from leading to ecological destruction, growth-inducing technological change is both necessary and liberating. Ultimately, the book demonstrates that dynamism, not stasis, is the essential condition of human society, as it is of life.
