ARTICLE .1 Macro-Perspectives beyond the World System Joseph Voros Swinburne University of Technology Australia Abstract This paper continues a discussion begun in an earlier article on nesting macro-social perspectives to also consider and explore macro-perspectives beyond the level of the current world system and what insights they might reveal for the future of humankind. Key words: Macrohistory, Human expansion into space, Extra-terrestrial civilisations Introduction This paper continues a train of thought begun in an earlier paper (Voros 2006) where an approach to macro-social analysis based on the idea of "nesting" social-analytical perspectives was described and demonstrated (the essence of which, for convenience, is briefly summarised here). In that paper, essential use was made of a typology of social-analytical perspectives proposed by Johan Galtung (1997b), who suggested that human systems could be viewed or studied at three main levels of analysis: the level of the individual person; the level of social systems; and the level of world systems. Distinctions can be made between different foci of study. The focus may be on the stages and causes of change through time (termed diachronic), or it could be at some specific point in time (termed synchronic). As well, the focus may be on a specific single case (termed idiographic), in contrast to seeking regularities, patterns, or generalised "laws" (termed nomo- thetic). In this way, there are four main types of perspectives found at any particular level of analy- sis. In this paper we select a sample of 18 galaxies at z ∼ 1; observed in the Hα emission line with KMOS, to derive accurate kinematics using a novel 3D analysis technique. We use the new code 3DBarolo, which models the galaxy emission directly in 3D observational space, without the need to extract kinematic maps. This major advantage of this technique is that it is not affected by beam smearing and thus it enables the determination of rotation velocity and intrinsic velocity dispersion, even at low spatial resolution. We find that (1) the rotation curves of these z ∼ 1 galaxies rise very steeply within few kiloparsecs and remain flat out to the outermost radius and (2) the Hα velocity dispersions are low, ranging from 15 to 40 km s−1, which leads to V/σ = 3–10. -

The study is based on BVR photometry with the 1.6-m telescope at OPD, and long-slit spectroscopy with Gemini South’s GMOS spectrograph, with two-gratings centered at 5 011 Å and 6 765 Å. -

The intrusion of the smaller galaxy causes the structure of the larger galaxy to compress as the smaller galaxy falls through, and to recoil back after the smaller galaxy passes through, hence the ring-like shape. In our research, we studied the star-forming regions of a sample of ring galaxies and compared to those of other interacting galaxies and normal galaxies. Using UV, optical, and IR archived images in twelve wavelengths from three telescopes, we analyzed samples of star-forming regions in ring and normal spiral galaxies using photometry. -

Could evidence be buried in existing data? To recognize ETI, we first propose criteria discerning life from non-life based on thermodynamics and living systems theory. Then we extrapolate civilizational development to both external and internal growth. Taken together, these two trends lead to an argument that some existing binary stars might actually be ETI. Since these hypothetical beings feed actively on stars, we call them “stellivores”. We present an independent thermodynamic argument for their existence, with a metabolic interpretation of interacting binary stars. The jury is still out, but the hypothesis is testable with existing astrophysical data. Unfortunately, despite some searches, the results are negative (Jugaku, Noguchi, and Nishimura 1995; Carrigan Jr 2009; Wright et al. 2014). We thus lack proof or even indication of ETI, a fundamental gap in our knowledge of the universe. -

COMMISSION 51: BIOASTRONOMY (BIOASTRONOMIE) Report of Meetings, on 25,26,30 July 1991 PRESIDENT: George Marx VICE-PRESIDENT: Ron Brown SECRETARY: Jean Heidman 26. July 1991: Business meeting Commission 51 deals with scientific problems related to Bioastronomy, including dis cussions concerning the emergence of life and intelligence in the Universe, designation of the promising sites, empirical search for life and technology, finally the possible connection of the terrestrial life to astronomical factors. This Commission was formed at the iniciative of Michael Papagiannis (Boston University) in 1982 and it worked under the chairmanship of Michael Papagiannis, Francis Drake and George Marx since then. The Commission counts well above 300 members from astronomy and interdisciplinary fields. Members of the Commission were reached by the Bioastronomy News, edited by Michael Papagiannis. The president of the Commission 51 reported about the activities as follows: Meetings on Bioastronomy at the IAU General Assemblies were well attended by the members of IAU (beyond the membership of the Commission 51), and by invited experts from other sciences since 1979. This proves that the interdisciplinary approach of our Commission corresponds to a definite need. The advances of our scientific understanding of planet and comet formation, the exploration of the Solar System by space probes, the empirical and theoretical investigation of the planetary atmospheres, the clarification of the early history of our own planet, the confrontation of astronomical and geological evidences with the laboratory experiments concerning chemical evolution, the grand theories of the origins of life based upon our most recent scientific knowledge, finally the spectacular advances of radio astronomy due to the fast development of computer technique made bioastronomy to a solid and respected branch of research in the 1980-es. -

In recent years, detections of outbursts and circumstellar relics uncover transient modes emerging moments before the supernova. The goal of this thesis is to bring theoretical attention into how massive stars launch outflows. In this thesis, we study two modes of mass loss seen during rare, but critical, phases of stellar evolution. The first considers dense, steady outflows from Wolf-Rayet stars. The second considers the eruptions and explosions seen from luminous blue variables (LBVs) and Type IIn supernova (SN) progenitors. Outflows from both systems are optically thick but either radiative or adiabatic in nature. Wolf-Rayet winds are driven by strong radiative pressure on metal lines. Suppressing the outflow is shown to drastically alter the stellar structure with peculiar features including an extended radiative cavity encased in a massive shell. We construct outflow models and conclude the galactic WR population does not harbour such structures. We derive a minimum mass loss rate to launch a transonic, optically thick outflow and find the iron opacity bump to be responsible for launching WR winds. LBVs and Type IIn SN progenitors are seen to abruptly expel mass.
