Charlie was joined on the panel by Ashford MP, Damian Green; North Thanet MP, Sir Roger Gale; South Thanet, MP Craig Mackinlay; and Medway MP, Kelly Tolhurst. The Kent and Medway MPs listened carefully to presentations on the future infrastructure that is vital to unlock economic growth, boost job creation and accelerate housing delivery. Port of Dover chief executive, Tim Waggott, speaking on behalf of the business community and council leaders, highlighted the importance to the UK economy of keeping the traffic moving across the River Thames and along the M20/A20 and M2/A2 arteries of Kent - a gateway county connecting the UK with its largest trading partner. Mr Waggott said the Port of Dover handles 17% of the UK’s trade in goods, and if it were a separate country, it would have the 55th biggest economy in the world. Over 10,000 trucks travel through it every day. Together with Eurotunnel, the cross-Channel corridor handles a staggering £220 billion of UK trade in goods. Over half of the HGVs coming from the Port and the Eurotunnel terminal travel to the Midlands and the North of England, often using the M2 and Dartford Tunnel.

The Secretary of State for Education (“the Secretary of State”) has noted in respect of Medway Council (“the Council”) that performance in respect of children’s social care services is ‘inadequate’ as detailed in Ofsted’s inspection report of 27 August 2019 (the 2019 Ofsted report). 2. The Council’s failure led the Secretary of State to issue a statutory direction on 27 August 2019 (“the first direction”), requiring the Council to comply with any instructions of the Secretary of State or the Children’s Services Commissioner; and to co-operate with a Commissioner-led review of services. 3. The first direction was replaced with a second direction on 7 January 2020 (“the second direction”), requiring the Council to work with a Leadership Improvement Partner and extending the appointment of the Children’s Services Commissioner. 4. The Secretary of State has carefully considered: a. Ofsted’s inspection report of 27 August 2019, which found the Council’s delivery of children’s social care services, particularly in relation to the impact of leaders on social work practice with children and families and the experiences and progress of children who need help and protections to be rated as ‘inadequate’. b. The present building was probably started about the middle of the 12th century. St Werburgh’s Church is constructed of rubble stonework. Dressed stonework is in Kentish Ragstone and 19th century Bath stone. The lower sections of the Western Tower have some ‘Tuffa’ stonework that pre date 1100; however, the majority of the Nave and Aisles date from the 13th century with elegant arcades. In the 14th and 15th centuries the aisles and clerestory were significantly altered. The chancel dates from the 13th and 14th centuries and the Nave and Chancel in particular retain magnificent late medieval roofs. The spire is covered with Oak shingles and is 61 feet in height with a further 7 feet from its summit to the ball. The whole is surmounted by a 4-foot tall weather vane. It is set on a battlemented tower of 55 feet in height, making a total of 127 feet. During 2015 due to a problem with woodworm and crumbling floor timbers and with funding from the Heritage Lottery, grants from various charities and organisations and our own fund raising, we have been able to re-order the main part of the church.
