,--___J The particulars pertaining to the State o f Nagaland as presented in this P aper-I of 1971 Cen- ' sus have been compiled and tabulated from the Charge Abstracts and District Abstracts furnished by the ('.-barge Superintendents and Dist rict Census Officers of the respective district. It is needless to mention that these data are crude and purely provisional. . The final population figures will be· made available only after the Schedules duly filled in by the Enumerators are processed systematically from the Tabulation Office. 2. In this Publication we have presented Dist rictwise figures only. But in the Primary Census Abstract the Census figures will be made available down to the village level in rural areas and Enu­ m erator's block in urban a reas a part from presenting. the data by sex, educational level, broad agt)ot group etc. in the subsequent publications. 3. The tables and maps presented in this P ublica tion have been briefly analysed. 2

The map presents the districtwise density of population of Nagaland.

Method: The density~ of population in each district is shown by Choropleth method. 1. The ,total number of persons enumerated in ihe State of Nagaland at the sunrise of ist April. 1971 was 515,561 (provisional) with 215,359 malCi and 240.202 females. Among the districts. Kohima .district records the highest populatioJOl (174.919) while Mokok:chun~ district records the lowest (168,671). Tuensang being 171,980.

2. The State average for sex ratio is 872 females per I,OOe males in 1971 Census which has falle. to a considerable extent than that of the 1961 Cens'qs (933). Among the districts highest sex-ratio is recorded in (912) and the lowest in Kohima district (804), Mokokchung being 907, which shows fall in sex ratio in all the distdcts in the present Census than that of previous Cemus.

3. The density of population per sq. km_ in Nllgaland ill 1971 Censwi is 31 which is higher tha!l that of 1961 Census. 4. The decennial growth rdte of popUlation in Tuensang district in between 1951-61 could not be estimated for the reasons as under.:-

\ "The Tuensang district (former Naga Trib::tl Area) was censused for the first tjme in 1951 for 50.6 sq. miles with a population of 7,02S. As it is quite impossible to estimate what this newly censused population would have amounted to in previous censuses, no attempt has been made to determine the population of this small area in the previous censuses" (page-49 of Part II-A-Nagaland-1961 CellSUsj.

The higbest growth rate of population in between 1961-71 is recorded in Kohima district (60.58%) while the lowest is recorded in Tuensang distric~ (28.08%). The growth rate of populatioll for the State of Nagaland is 39.64%. This high growth rate in Kohima district may be due to migration of people from the adjoining districts of the State and also from the other States of India. is

90.09 percent of the total population of Nagaland are confined iIi rural areas and only 9.91 percent live in Urban areas. In comparing with the percentage of urban population to total population in 1961 and 197,1 Censuses it is observed that it has increased for all the districts and also the State.

.K~hima District has witnessed the most spectacular growth 60.58 % in the decade t961-71 for total and rural (47.22 %). The highest growth rate for urban is recorded in Mokokchung district ( 182.25%). The State growth rate for total is 39.64 percent, for rural 32.70 percent and for Urban 16.66 percent.

Nagaland is, having only three town as were in 1961 Census nilmely Kohima, Mokokchung and . No new town is consituted in 1971 Cemus. Out of three towns only Kohima has got its promotion to class III town which wa'l class V in 196L Rest two other towns also g9t their promotion to class IV in this Census from Class V of 1961. The highest population growth rate amongst the towns of Nagaland in 1961-71 is coming in Kohima town (+195.31 % ) which is higher than the Nagaland urban population growth rate ( +166.59%). The growth rate in 1951-61 of this town was only (+75.66%). The lowest growth rate among the towns in 1961-71 is coming in Dimapur town (+133.66%). The highest sex ratio, females per every 1,000 males amongst the towns of Nagaland is coming in Kohima town (510) which is higher than that of Nagaland State urban average (468) and the lowest m MokokchuD2' town (416). 22

Out of the total provisional popUlation of 5-15,561, 140,911 persons- are literates in Nagaland as rcorded in the 1971 Census and out oftbe total literates of 140,911 persons 94,769 are males and 46,142 are females_

It is seen that K'Ohima district and .Mokokchung district have literacy rates of 30.55% and 38.83% respectively which are above the State average (27.33 percent). Tuensang district records the lowest literacy rates ('12.78%). Sex-wise literacy rates are highest in Mokokchung district. A comparison with the corresponding figures of 1961 shows that literacy rates in all the districts have increased almost uniformly in the 1971 Census. 23

Out of the total population of 515,561, 268,557 are workers which constitue 52.09 per cent. In 1961, .the percentage of workers to total population was 59.40. Tuensang District records the highest percentage of workers to total population ( 56.29 ) in the State followed by Kohima 52.21 percent and Mokokchung 47·69 percent. In 1961 also Tuensang, recorded the highest percentage of workers amongst the districts of the State. While comparing the percentage of \y,0rkers of 1961 and 1971 Census it is observed that it has fallen in all the districts and also in the.State. 25

209,984 persons are cultivators out of the total workers of 268,557 which constiutes 78.19 percent in Nagaland. The percentage of cultivators to total workers has diminished in 1971 than that of 1961 Census (88.22), Amongst the distircts, highest percentage is recorded in Tuensang Distict (89.89) followed by Mokokchung (74.13) and Kohima (69.36). Again the highest percentage of female culti"lators to total workers is recorded in Tuensang Distict (98.32) which is higher than that of the State average (96.00), Other than cultivators and agricultural1abourers, other workers share 20.37 percent to total working popUlation in Nagaland.
