أن ّأقدم هذا البحث ّعلي بانطباعٍ قديم حول مدينة الخرطوم، عمره أكثر من خمسة عشر عاماً آثرت أن أسجله، قبل أن أدّون قالت بعثة الواليات المتحدة عودتي إليها هذه المرة، أال وهو أن األمريكية عن السودان في تقريرها: خالل أيام، الخرطوم هي مدينة الكنوز بكل ما تحمل اكتشفنا أن السودانيين، أغنياء كانوا أم الكلمة من معنىً، بشراً وتراباً وشجراً فقراء، هم أكثر الناس ًفضيلة ًوأخالقا. وحجرا.. مدينة كلها ثراء وغنىً إال أنها بحاجة فقط إلى تطوير لعلي أجده في هذه الرحلة!، قلت لنفسي. بدأت تسجيل مالحظاتي بهذه العبارة.. وكتبت ما كنت قد قرأته في خطابات بعثة الواليات المتحدة األمريكية لكتابة كتاب عن السودان 1995 في عزّ األزمة الدبلوماسية بين البلدين حيث قال خطابهم: “خالل أيام، اكتشفنا أن السودانيين، أغنياء كانوا أم فقراء، من كل إقليم بالقطر، هم من أكثر الناس فضيلةً وأخالقاً”. كتبت هذا ووزعته على المصور والمحرر ومدير العالقات والمواعيد بين فريقنا والجهات المعنية في الخرطوم.

الخرطوم بين تاريخٍ حافل وجغرافية استثنائية تقع الخرطوم، عاصمة السودان، عند نقطة التقاء النيل األبيض بالنيل األزرق ليبدأ نهر النيل العظيم مسيرته الكبرى منها نحو الشمال والبحر المتوسط. كما أنها تقع في مكان خاص جداً، مناخياً وجغرافياً، حيث تعد ملتقى هام جداً لوقوف خطوط الطيران التي تتوزع عبر القارات. تسمى الخرطوم بالعاصمة المثلثة وذلك باإلشارة إلى التجمع الميتروبوليتي المتكوّن من المدن الثالث الخرطوم وبحري وأم درمان. ورغم أن لكل مدينة حكايتها المنفردة، إال أننا اليوم ال يمكن الفصل بينهن لتاريخ مشترك وجغرافية واحدة. وحسب أشهر الروايات، أخذت المدينة اسمها “الخرطوم” من شكل قطعة األرض التي تقع عليها المدينة والتي يشقها نهرا النيل اللذان يلتقيان فيها مع بعضهما في شكل انحنائي يرسمان بينهما قطعة أرض أشبه بخرطوم الفيل. إال أن الرحالة البريطاني كابتن جيمس الوقت: يوم السبت 7 سبتمبر جرانت أكد في رحلته االستكشافية ً 2015، الساعة الحادية عشر ليال. لمنابع النيل أن االسم مشتق من المكان: مطار الملك خالد الدولي زهرة القرطم التي كانت تزرع بكثافة في الرياض. الوجهة: الخرطوم في المنطقة لتصديرها إلى مصر حيث يتم استخراج الزيت منها لإلنارة وقد استخدمها الرومان عند غزوهم لمصر
