  • WARFARE OFFICERS CAREER HANDBOOK II Warfare Officers Career Handbook
WARFARE OFFICERS CAREER HANDBOOK II WARFARE OFFICERS CAREER HANDBooK Warfare O fficers C areer H andbook IV WARFARE OFFICERS CAREER HANDBooK Foreword The Warfare Officers Career Handbook provides information for members of the Royal Australian Navy’s Warfare community. For the purposes of this handbook, the Warfare community is deemed to include all officers of the Seaman, Pilot and Observer Primary Qualifications. The Warfare Officer Community symbiotically contains personnel from the seaman, Submarine, Aviation, Hydrographic and Meteorological, Mine Clearance Diving and Naval Communications and Intelligence groups. The Warfare Officers Career Handbook is a source document for Warfare Officers to consult as they progress through their careers. It is intended to inform and stimulate consideration of career issues and to provide a coherent guide that articulates Navy’s requirements and expectations. The book provides a summary of the Warfare branch specialisations and the sub-specialisations that are embedded within them, leading in due course to entry into the Charge Program and the Command opportunities that follow. The Warfare Officers Career Handbook also describes the historical derivation of current warfare streams to provide contemporary relevance and the cultural background within which maritime warfare duties are conducted. It discusses the national context in which Warfare Officers discharge their duties. Leadership and ethical matters are explored, as is the inter-relationship between personal attributes, values, leadership, performance and sense of purpose. There is no intention that this handbook replicate or replace extant policy and procedural guidelines. Rather, the handbook focuses on the enduring features of maritime warfare. Policy by its nature is transient. Therefore, as far as possible, the Warfare Officers Career Handbook deals with broad principles and not more narrowly defined policies that rightly belong in other documents.

  • Paine, Ships of the World Bibliography
Bibliography The bibliography includes publication data for every work cited in the source notes of the articles. It should be noted that while there are more than a thousand titles listed, this bibliography can by no means be considered exhaustive. Taken together, the literature on the Titanic, Bounty, and Columbus’s Niña, Pinta, and Santa María comprises hundreds of books and articles. Even a comprehensive listing of nautical bibliographies is impossible here, though four have been especially helpful in researching this book: Bridges, R.C., and P. E. H. Hair. Compassing the Vaste Globe of the Earth: Studies in the History of the Hakluyt Society 1846–1896. London: Hakluyt Society, 1996. Includes a list of the more than 300 titles that have appeared under the society’s imprint. Labaree, Benjamin W. A Supplement (1971–1986) to Robert G. Albion’s Naval & Maritime History: An Annotated Bibliography. 4th edition. Mystic, Conn.: Mystic Seaport Museum, 1988. Law, Derek G. The Royal Navy in World War Two: An Annotated bibliography. London: Greenhill Books, 1988. National Maritime Museum (Greenwich, England). Catalogue of the Library, Vol. 1, Voyages and Travel. London: Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, 1968. There are many interesting avenues of research in maritime history on the Internet. Two have been particularly useful: Maritime History Virtual Archives, owned and administered by Lar Bruzelius. Presentations Occupation and Humanitarian Aid —A Case Study: The Channel Islands 1944-1945 Phylomena H. Badsey The Channel Islands lie just off the west coast of northern France, but for historical reasons they are part of British sovereign territory. They comprise Guernsey and Jersey together with the much smaller Alderney and Sark, and a few very small uninhabited islands. In 1939, the main employment on the islands was tourism and intensive agriculture, much of it in the form of greenhouses—growing flowers, grapes, melons, and tomatoes for export; or farming, in particular the growing of potatoes (Jersey Royals) in open fields, and dairy farming with pedigree cattle. The islands had a combined population of just over 97,000 but in June 1940 following non-mandatory evacuation, 66,000 people remained, mostly older men, women, and children. A military decision was made not to defend the Channel Islands by the British following the fall of France in May/June 1940, for strategic reasons.1 So, they became the only British territory in Europe occupied by German forces during the Second World War. This produced a highly unusual situation after the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944, and the Allied advance inland in July; the German garrison on the Channel Islands was cut off, with no possibility of escape or re-supply. On June 17, 1944 Hitler ordered that the Channel Islands must be defended to the last.2 The German garrison refused to surrender; eventually humanitarian aid had to be provided, through the International Red Cross and with the agreement of the British government and the German military occupiers, to the civilian population.

In the Shadow of the Moon 2007 PG 109 minutes David Sington and Christopher Riley's acclaimed documentary reveals the history of the Apollo space program through interviews with the brave astronauts who lived through a paradigm-shifting chapter in world history. Devoted to President John F. Kennedy's goal of sending a man to the moon, the NASA project pushed the envelope of what was humanly possible. But the program also experienced several failures, one of which resulted in tragedy. Man on Wire 2008 PG-13 94 minutes Philippe Petit captured the world's attention in 1974 when he successfully walked across a high wire between New York's Twin Towers. This Oscar winner for Best Documentary explores the preparations that went into the stunt as well as the event and its aftermath. Obsessed with the towers even before they were fully constructed, Petit sneaked into the buildings several times to determine the equipment he needed to accomplish his daring feat. American Experience: Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple 2006 NR 86 minutes How could one man -- Peoples Temple leader Jim Jones -- persuade 900 people to commit mass suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid in the jungles of Guyana? This penetrating portrait of the demented preacher attempts to answer that question. Using never- before-seen footage and audio accounts of two Jonestown survivors, documentarian Stanley Nelson paints a chilling picture of a social experiment gone horribly awry. When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts 2006 TV-MA 3 discs Spike Lee commemorates the people of New Orleans with a four-hour epic documentary that not only recounts the events of late August 2005 but asks why they unfolded the way they did in the first place.
