While the permit only cost $100, they did not have $5000 of liability insurance, which was also required. Also, State Parks required them to arrange for extra lifeguard coverage, at an additional cost of $1000. Most of the naturists did not get the news in time and showed up

YOUNG NATURISTS CELEBRATE BODYPAINTING DAY IN CITY 07/09/2016 – Dozens of artists used the naked bodies as canvases on the third annual NYC Bodypainting Day, which celebrates freedom of artistic expression and body acceptance. The location along the Cuyahoga River had remained a secret until just a few hours before to protect the participants from both uninvited onlookers and the news media, but the time had finally come for Spencer Tunick to climb his ladder with his camera and take a group photo of 100 nude women holding reflective mirrors pointed toward the convention building. Tunick had put the word out in May that he wanted to make a dramatic statement. Tunick stated that Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has been criticized for offensive comments about women, and his vice presidential pick, Mike Pence, signed one of the nation's most restrictive abortion laws as governor of Indiana. "This is for you and this is for our future," Tunick tells the assembled women. "We will shine your light and power onto the RNC. We're going to shine the light of women into this arena." Since May, 1,800 women signed up to participate and over 200 were assembled there now to help Tunick make his statement. A reporter at the scene from Esquire Magazine observed that the women were of all different ages, shapes and races. “They came from as far away as Belgium and as close as down the street. Some are here to send a message to Donald Trump and others just wanted to take the opportunity to proudly show their bodies publicly.” The women start arriving at 6:20 a.m., tightly holding sheets as they walk up. Even though the event was on private land and thus exempt from Ohio’s anti-nudity laws, Tunick asked the women to bring a cover in case the local cops decided to cite or arrest people anyway. His backup plan is to have some women make a wall of sheets along the property's perimeter. After signing waivers, the women were arranged by Tunick into multiple rows and give large reflective mirrors to hold over their heads on cue. Sunday, August 28, 2PM “FREE THE NIPPLE” TOP FREEDOM PROTEST SET FOR VENICE BEACH Location: Venice Beach Boardwalk This is not an SCNA event. The at Venice Beach is an annual protest for the promotion of gender equality. Part of a worldwide movement, Go Topless Day aims to raise awareness of gender discrimination that prevents women from baring their naked breasts in public. The event encourages women to go topless in public and men to cover their chests by wearing bras or bikinis to show the inequality. Locally, the march starts at 2PM at Boardwalk and Navy Streets, although traditionally, many will start arriving after noon. The demonstration will include a march down the boardwalk followed by a few speeches. It always draws about 50-75 women and about 10 times that many men plus a couple dozen police officers. Because of the nudity ordinance in effect at LA County beaches, women are encouraged to go as “bare as you dare,” however, as in previous years, most women will opt for wearing red Band-Aids in a crisscross over their and areolas. Go Topless Day always falls at the Sunday closest to Women's Equality Day, Aug 26. It was on 8/26/1920 that women earned their right to vote. In 1971, Congress designated Aug 26 each year as "Women's Equality Day.”

This year, SCNA and Friends of Bates Beach are in charge of this annual event at North Rincon (Bates) Beach. Bring gloves to wear and maybe a long-handled picker tool if you have one. HOW TO RSVP AND PAY FOR SCNA PARTIES AND ACTIVITIES Payments by cash or check are accepted, but we prefer members pay by credit card through our on-line PayPal (you don’t need a Pay Pal account yourself to use ours). We accept MasterCard, VISA, Discover, and American Express. Party cancellations are also accepted no later than 48 hours before the start of the event because that is when we buy the party supplies and food. No Refunds are given after that deadline. SCNA Newsletter for August 2016 Page 11 of 12 TRAVEL CORNER LUPIN LODGE: A HIDDEN CALIFORNIA NATURIST TREASURE IS REBORN ONCE AGAIN By Gary Mussell Lupin Lodge is a 110-acre private club and resort where clothes are optional and having fun is infectious. The club is surrounded by pine- fragrant hills in the Santa Cruz Mountains that separate the beach community of Santa Cruz, California from the high tech corridor known as “Silicon Valley” near San Jose. Lupin is about an hour’s drive south of San Francisco and it has blended nudist enthusiasts from this mix of Bay Area countercultures through many generations. Next only to the natural beauty that surrounds it, Lupin's most appealing feature may be its microclimate. While the California coast endures its annual spring and early-summer ritual of daily low clouds and fog, Lupin is located high enough in the mountains to usually avoid what the locals call “The June Gloom” and remains perhaps the sunniest spot in the Bay Area during those months .Newcomers are often surprised to learn that the resort actually began life in 1936 as a winery, and that its buildings have been built and rebuilt by many a succession of owners through the years. It has also survived a series of challenges through its histories, from the 1989 Loma Prieta 6.9 magnitude earthquake (whose epicenter was only a few miles away), to a recent dispute over water access rights, to the sudden death of its longtime owner, Glyn Stout, earlier this year. Lori Kay Stout, the present owner and general manager, settled the water issue out of court soon after Glyn’s death and now focuses on the club future. There is a new well on the property and a new water treatment plant. There was also a lot of El Nino rain last winter, so the storage tanks are full. The lawns are once again green and the surrounding flora is blooming. Also back are the families of deer that roam the property after dark, some pesky raccoons, and a couple of tame skunks (just don’t startle them!) romping through the flowerbeds. The swimming pool above the lawn area continues to attract volleyball and water volleyball enthusiasts, especially midday on weekends. Following Glyn’s death it seems the Lupin members rose with one voice to say, “Yes, we can!” and pitched in to make the guest experience the best ever. There is an almost entirely new staff at the registration desk with new computers to make check-in much easier than in year’s past. The restaurant remains one of the better ones among naturist resorts in California. Lori Kay insists on hiring chefs with culinary school experience, so the dinners are always a great delight. The restaurant also has a new computer so food prices are charged accurately and quickly. One can also use a credit card to make a purchase, a change from years past when only cash was accepted. We visited the park on its inaugural Travel Club Weekend. Once each month, Lupin assigns one 3-day weekend to attract members from other clubs in the region at discount rates. The theme for our weekend was Summer of Love, and each day there was a nostalgia band performing songs from the Age of Aquarius. A folk trio set the mood on Friday night, followed by a couple of bands rocking under the big oak tree on the clubhouse lawn. A couple of members brought their hula-hoops and put on a spontaneous performance while others blew bubbles across the audience on the lawn. Saturday night, a DJ played all the major hits from that era, bringing back many fond memories. Unlike what is happening at several other nudist parks around the country, Lupin is successfully attracting a new generation of Millennials (and younger) to the park. They have given them a big tent behind the yurts to camp out together, and they let this younger crowd bring their recorded music to the Redwood Grove grass area behind the pool. The weekend we were there I observed a group of perhaps 20 younger people hanging out together, although most were more interested on texting than interacting with each other. (Note: The entire park is a WiFi “hot zone,” and cellphone access is excellent nearly everywhere on the grounds.) Overnight guests may rent a furnished Yurt with a queen-sized bed, desk table, heater, and fan, although frankly, not much time is ever spent there. Guests may also camp in a tent, or rent an RV hookup. I must admit I was a little skeptical about Lupin before I got there, especially because of the continued drought across California. But Lupin has come back, yet again, and seems like all it needs is more visitors to come and enjoy its energetic and effervescent soul. Lupin Lodge is located at 20600 Aldercroft Heights, Los Gatos, CA 95033. Telephone: (408) 353-9200, Web site: http//www/LupinLodge.org, Email: [email protected]. Lupin Lodge is hosting the Naturist Society Western Gathering July 28-31. Rolf will be writing a report about it in the September newsletter.
