Zespół otrzymał statuetkę, by kilka dni później, 19 listopada 1990 roku, po raz pierwszy w historii przyznawania tych nagród, została ona odebrana laureatom. Dwaj piosenkarze Rob Pilatus i Fabrice Morvan zostali zauważeni przez producenta Franka Fariana, który podpisał z nimi kontrakt, dając początek niemieckiej grupie Milli Vanilli. Jej pierwszy album „All or Nothing” wydano w Europie w 1988 roku i od razu odniósł on sukces. W Stanach Zjednoczonych, gdzie płyta pojawiła się na początku 1989 roku, krążek nosił nazwę „Girl you know it’s true” – od tytułu wiodącego singla. Prawda mogła ujrzeć światło dzienne na wiele miesięcy przed rozdaniem nagród Grammy, bowiem podczas jednego z nagrań, gdy studio Arista otrzymało demo z faktycznym głosem Milli Vanilli, jego wiceprezydent powiedział: „What is that crap?” Pomimo plotek grupa Milli Vanilli została nominowana do nagrody Grammy w kategorii Najlepszy Debiut. Zespół otrzymał statuetkę, by kilka dni później, 19 listopada 1990 roku, po raz pierwszy w historii przyznawania tych nagród, została ona odebrana laureatom. 14 lutego 2007 ogłoszono, że wytwórnia Universal Picture pracuje nad filmem opartym na prawdziwej historii wzlotu i upadku Milli Wanilii w branży muzycznej, a scenariuszem i reżyserią do filmu miał zająć się Jeff Nathanson, autor scenariusza z „Catch me if you can”. ,, I VOL. XXIII NO. 54 FRIDAY , NOVEMBER 16, 1990 THE INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER SERVING NOTRE DAME AND SAINT MARY'S Security call-boxes to be ready by Dec. By MEGAN JUNIUS News Writer Security call-boxes are currently being installed in 18 locations around campus, according to Phil Johnson, assistant director of Security. The call boxes are specially designed for fast, reliable response, he said. To notify Security, the user need only open the door of the call-box. Inside the box will be an extremely sensitive speaker telephone that allows Security to hear the situation whether or not the person activating the phone is speaking, Johnson said. Because of the special wiring of the phone, Security will immediately know the location of the phone and send help, he said. The phones were placed in locations needing better security, as proven through campus statistics. In the past, Saint Mary's Road and the parking lots have been a concern to many, he said, so call-boxes will be placed in these areas. However, since the residence halls have phones at the front of each door, and the paths along the main quads are well lit, there is little need for call boxes in these areas, Johnson said. The eighteen call-boxes will be ready for use Dec. 1, Johnson said, as the wiring and software are still being adjusted. Signs will be posted above the call boxes when they are officially in operation. "We hope these phones are taken seriously. They One more for "Touchdown Jesus" have been installed for emergency use only," Johnson said.

  • Playback Singers of Bollywood and Hollywood
ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD By MYRNA JUNE LAYTON Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF LITERATURE AND PHILOSOPHY in the subject MUSICOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA. SUPERVISOR: PROF. M. DUBY JANUARY 2013 Student number: 4202027-1 I declare that ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. SIGNATURE DATE (MRS M LAYTON) Preface I would like to thank the two supervisors who worked with me at UNISA, Marie Jorritsma who got me started on my reading and writing, and Marc Duby, who saw me through to the end. Marni Nixon was most helpful to me, willing to talk with me and discuss her experiences recording songs for Hollywood studios. It was much more difficult to locate people who work in the Bollywood film industry, but two people were helpful and willing to talk to me; Craig Pruess and Deepa Nair have been very gracious about corresponding with me via email. Lastly, putting the whole document together, which seemed an overwhelming chore, was made much easier because of the expert formatting and editing of my daughter Nancy Heiss, sometimes assisted by her husband Andrew Heiss. Joe Bonyata, a good friend who also happens to be an editor and publisher, did a final read-through to look for small details I might have missed, and of course, he found plenty. For this I am grateful.

Changes in the 1980s THE SELLING OF ROCK The Music Video Until the 1980s, TV played a small part in the promotion of rock music. (Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, etc.) Cable TV created an opportunity for specialized formats. (all weather stations, all movie stations, etc.) A few experiments with music videos ¡ Nickelodeon – Popclips (origin of the VeeJay) MTV Music Television (MTV) debuted on August 1, 1981 at 12:01am ÷ MTV Debut Startup cost of $20 million Operated under the same format that radio stations had for years ¡ Artists/Record labels provided their rock videos at no charge ¡ Copied the same format – chatter & play; interviews; news and contests The Video added an extra weapon to the record label arsenal ¡ Great promotion tool Artists and Companies scrambled to create imaginative and technically innovative videos to go with new releases. Often times the videos had nothing to do with the lyrics or were not very elaborate. ¡ “Dancing in the Street” – David Bowie & Mick Jagger Some bands owed their success largely to the video format (e.g. Duran, Duran) ¡ “Come Undone” – Duran, Duran - By the mid-1980s, Rock Videos – specifically MTV – were the hottest new thing in rock. Other Stations began to program Rock Videos into their programming. ¡ - USA Network – Night Flight (1990) ¡ - NBC – Friday Night Videos ¡ - WTBS – Night Tracks ¡ - Other Cable Stations ( CMT, NN, BET, VH-1) Negatives of MTV Some of the complaints of MTV ¡ Mainly featured white mainstream rock (until Michael Jackson’s rise and, the introduction of Rap) ¡ Majority of Music Videos focused on sex and violence ¡ Image became more important than the music ÷ The Hot 100 dominated by pretty faces/well-shaped bodies (Paula Abdul & Janet Jackson vs.

His group Milli Vanilli was given the Best New Artist award. Months later, when it was admitted that Morvan and partner Rob Pilatus weren't the ones who sang on hit songs like 'Blame It On the Rain' and 'Girl You Know It's True,' their Grammy was taken back and the media and music industry chewed them up and spit them out just as fast as they built them up. Now, two decades after that tumultuous year, PopEater had the chance to chat with Morvan about those rocky days, and what his life is like now, and why current artists using Auto-Tune are essentially doing the same thing Milli Vanilli did.

Born in 1890 in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, he was a glib and charming conman, fluent in multiple languages. He established himself by working scams on the ocean liners steaming between Paris and New York City. Lustig's first con involved a "money-printing machine". He would demonstrate the capability of the small box to clients, all the while lamenting that it took the device six hours to copy a $100 bill. The client, sensing huge profits, would buy the machines for a high price, usually over $30,000. Over the next twelve hours, the machine would produce two more $100 bills.
