While the German language signified intellectual independence and freedom of self-definition (against one‘s roots) for Kertész before the Holocaust, he notes (based on his engagement with fellow writer Jean Améry) that writing in German created severe difficulties in the post-war era. Using the examples of Hilde Spiel and Friedrich Torberg, this article explores this notion and asks how the loss of language experienced by Holocaust survivors impacted on these two Austrian-Jewish writers. The article argues that, while the works of Spiel and Torberg are haunted by the Shoah, the two writers do not write in the post-Auschwitz language that Kertész delineates in his essays, but are instead shaped by the exile experience of both writers. At the same time though, Kertész‘ concept seems to be haunted by exile, as his reception of Jean Améry‘s works, which form the basis of his linguistic genealogies, shows an inability to integrate the experience of exile. -

Heinrich Mann on his 150th Birthday” in Berlin on 25 March 2021 Good evening from Schloss Bellevue, wherever you are tuning in from. This is not the first time that Berlin’s Academy of the Arts is hosting a ceremony in Heinrich Mann’s honour. In March 1931, invitations were issued for an event on the premises of the Prussian Academy of Arts to congratulate the newly elected Chairman of its Literature Section on his 60th birthday. The guests at the time included Ricarda Huch and Alfred Döblin, and the speakers were Max Liebermann, Adolf Grimme and Thomas Mann. They hailed the great man as a modern artist and “clandestine politician”, as a “grand écrivain” and “European moralist”. That was how the writer Heinrich Mann was feted at the time, in the Weimar Republic. What a wonderful, illustrious gathering to mark his birthday. Today, the Academy of the Arts has issued another invitation to honour Heinrich Mann, this time on his 150th birthday. The setting is, for various reasons, slightly different than it was back then, with a livestream as opposed to a gala reception, a video message as opposed to a speech, and the Federal President in attendance as opposed to the great man’s brother and Nobel Laureate. Nevertheless, I am delighted that we want to try this evening to revive the spirit of Heinrich Mann and his age. We want to take a closer look at a writer, who after his death in 1950 was co opted by the GDR for its own political ends, who was eclipsed in West Germany by his renowned younger brother, and who is not forgotten yet whose works are seldom read today. -

The Book-of-the-Month Club marketed books as commodities for consumption, promoting leisurely reading among the growing middle class. But the Book-of-the-Month Club also claimed to be ‘stimulating our literature and deepening our culture’, and in fact, dozens of selected authors went on to receive the Pulitzer Prize or the Nobel Prize for Literature. The body of research on the Book-of-the-Month Club includes Janice A. Radway’s well-known multi-method study A Feeling for Books (1997). But translations among Book-of-the-Month Club selections have not yet been considered. Focusing in particular on books translated into English from German, this paper will present new data on originally foreign-language books that were selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club judges, thereby guaranteeing European authors maximum visibility and exorbitant sales in the US market, which was (and is) usually considered difficult to tap into for non-Anglophone writers. Syllabus German Karl May Films This course is designed for advanced students of German and fluent speakers. The language of all films and conversation is in German. Classic Karl May films produced in the 1960’s will be shown. Subtitles in German (Deutsch für Hörgeschädigte) assist those who do not understand the entire spoken dialog in order to both improve their listening comprehension and follow the action of the film. Time will be alloted for discussion and sharing of memories. Every boy and many girls growing up during the twentieth century in Germany and elsewhere in Europe assiduously devoured the Karl May adventure novels. Karl Friedrich May (pronounced „My“ was born February 25, 1842 and died March 30, 1912. He is one of the best selling German writers of all time, noted mainly for books set in the American Old West and similar books set in the Orient and Middle East. With the advent of the 1960’s films children and adults of all ages enjoyed Karl May in the film versions and the series soon became classics in Germany much as the Humphrey Bogart films did in the US. -

Ager, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Peter C. Pfeiffer , Ph.D . ABSTRACT In his collection of essays titled Unheimliche Heimat , W.G. Sebald asserts that, "Es ist offenbar immer noch nicht leicht, sich in Österreich zu Hause zu fühlen, insbesondere wenn einem, wie in den letzten Jahren nicht selten, die Unheimlichkeit der Heimat durch das verschiedentliche Auftreten von Wiedergänger und Vergangenheitsgespenstern öfter als lieb ins Bewußtsein gerufen wird" (Sebald 15-16). Sebald's term "Gespenster" may have a quite literal application; it is unheimlich to note, after all, how often the Golem makes unsettling appearances in twentieth-century Austrian-Jewish literature, each time as a protector and guardian of specific communities under threat. These iterations and reinventions of the Golem tradition give credence to Sebald’s description of Heimat as an ambivalent and often conflicted space, even in a relatively homogenous community, because these portrayals of Heimat juxtapose elements of innocence and guilt, safety and threat, logic and irrationality. In the face of the Holocaust's reign of death and annihilation, it seems fitting that Austrian-Jewish writers reanimated a long- standing symbol of strength rooted in religious tradition to counter destruction and find meaning in chaos and unexampled brutality. -
