Although she does not currently do much sewing, she has previously sewn garments, some she also hand-painted and sold at the Kow Kick. Jo Ann is a reader. She makes very good use of our library. Often, she will start a series, and if the library does not have the one she needs to continue, she will buy the book, read it and then donate it to the library. When Jo Ann has the time, she loves to travel with her daughters and “go fishing....fry them and eat them”. She visited Colorado, and she still vividly remembers the beauty she saw there. In talking about cooking, Jo Ann said she is not sure how she learned to cook. She just knows she had to learn how, with a husband and five children to feed. Early on, her cooking was done on a wood cook stove because her husband was a guide at a “hunting place” in Hunt, and the family lived in a cabin. She told me she made the most beautiful biscuits....so brown and pretty and raw on the inside. Jo Ann enjoys both cooking and baking, though she doesn’t do much anymore, living alone. Cooking pretty much revolves around family gatherings at holidays. Once in a while, when Jo Ann has the weekend off and finds herself hungry, she heads for the kitchen to cook it for herself. A member of First Baptist Church and the “Joy” Sunday School class, Jo Ann describes herself as nice (most of the time), dependable, and she likes to help others. I want to share one more really interesting tibit about our conversation. Recently, I featured our neighbor Nathan Tonne. Jo Ann said she met him by reading his story in the Cook’s Nook. She had imagined he was just a nice young man who had moved to town to work and was probably renting the house next door to her. I’m glad the column helped neighbors get to know each other.
