London, UK, Friday 15 June 2018 Jaguar Vector Racing have broken the outright world and national electric speed records in a battery-powered boat. The unique Jaguar Vector V20E recorded an average speed of 88.61mph across the two legs of the famous 1km course on Coniston Water, England. The electric boat was designed and constructed by Jaguar Vector in partnership with Jaguar Racing’s technical partner Williams Advanced Engineering. Jaguar Vector co-founder and technical director Peter Dredge piloted the V20E. Following Jaguar’s announcement in October 2017 to become the exclusive title partner of Vector, the team will attempt further world and national records over the next 18 months as part of a major initiative to push the boundaries of performance and to showcase British engineering. With every driver wanting to go faster and beat the previous best time, research and innovation in engineering of the car is really essential. Although higher speeds are the main criterion for determining the Formula 1 car’s aerodynamic setup, post the San Marino Grand Prix of 1994, the engineering research and development has also targeted for driver’s safety. The governing body of Formula 1, i.e. Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has made significant rule changes since this time, primarily targeting car safety and speed. Aerodynamic performance of a F1 car is currently one of the vital aspects of performance gain, as marginal gains are obtained due to engine and mechanical changes to the car. Thus, it has become the key to success in this sport, resulting in teams spending millions of dollars on research and development in this sector each year. -

Simtek Grand Prix was Born from Simtek Research Ltd, the name standing for Simulation Technology. The company founders were Nick Wirth and Max Mosley, Both of whom had serious pedigree within motorsport. Mosley had Been a team owner Before with March, and Wirth was a mechanical engineering student who was snapped up By March as an aerodynamicist, working underneath Adrian Newey. When March was sold to Leyton House, Mosley and Wirth? Both decided to leave, and joined forces to create Simtek. Originally, the company had a single office in Wirth’s house, But it was soon oBvious they needed a Bigger, more wind‐tunnel shaped Base, which they Built in Oxfordshire. Mosley had the connections that meant racing teams from all over the gloBe were interested in using their research technologies, But while keeping the clients satisfied, Simtek Began designing an F1 car for BMW in secret. -

We’ve looked at Big accidents, Big fines and Big changes, now it’s time to look at another Big day in F1’s history. Today we’re looking at 22nd OctoBer 1999. In 1999, Michael Schumacher Broke his leg and missed out on six races. It was oBvious his championship chances were gone, But teammate Eddie Irvine kept the Ferrari flag flying in his aBsence. By the time Schumacher returned, at the Malaysian Grand Prix, the title Battle was Between Irvine and Hakkinen in the McLaren. It was a tough race for the Woking Based team, with a couple of Bad strategy calls, and Hakkinen ended up third, standing on the podium Below two Ferrari drivers. Irvine took the win, with Schumacher doing everything he needed, But no more, to make it a 1‐2. It seemed as though the championship Battle would go right down to the wire at the final race in Japan, that is until the FIA got involved. Upon checking the Ferrari cars for legality, some questionaBle Bodywork was found. The team were called up for discussion, and Before the evening was out, Irvine and Schumacher had Been disqualified. Ferrari weren’t aBout to take this lying down and instantly appealed. The case would go Before the International Court of Appeal. In the intervening period, Both Irvine and Hakkinen spoke out against the penalty, despite the fact that Mika was provisionally World Champion. -

The subject we have to talk about today is, well it’s a bit of a weighty issue. Mr C: A huge issue, we’re talking driver weight, or lack thereof. Christine: It’s been going on for a while but it seems to have really, really hit the consciousness of the paddock and fans this particular week, this back-to-back races. Mr C: News came out during the Malaysian Grand Prix, I think Martin Brundle mentioned that. Christine: It really wasn’t news, it was Martin Brundle stirring is what it was. Mr C: He mentioned it in passing. Christine: A driver who will remain nameless… Mr C: Yes, passed out at a PR event in Malaysia. Possibly due to the humidity experienced in that climate. That was followed swiftly by Adrian Sutil mentioning this week that he is intending to race without a drinks bottle in Bahrain. I think he did use it in Malaysia which is an exceptionally hot race but during the upcoming Grand Prix he is deciding to save as much weight as he can and thereby potentially putting his own health at risk. Christine: Yeah, well the Sauber is a heavy car and Sutil isn’t one of the lightest drivers. Mr C: He’s a tall guy. Although the coupe is arguably more iconic, the open version of the T70 was more successful. Developed in 1965, the Group 7 machine could take a number of di erent V8 engines and was ideal for the inaugural Can-Am contest in ʼ66. Champion John Surtees, Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue won races during the campaign, while Surtees was the only non-McLaren winner in ʼ67. The big Lola remains a force in historic racing.
