Past research has shown that participants in social protests are the agents of social change and producers of meaning, whereas, the news media perform social control function by reproducing the meanings working within constraints of the journalistic rules. An alternative view is that social control and social change go hand-in-hand in the news. This interpretive review essay traces the origin of social control thesis in journalism studies and its relationship to journalistic rules.

In this article, we argue that just as the literary journalists of the 1960s attempted to write the nonfiction equivalent of the great American novel, journalists of the 2010s are using digital tools to animate literary journalism techniques. To evaluate whether this emerging genre represents a new era of literary journalism and to what extent it incorporates new techniques of journalistic storytelling, we analyze 50 long-form multimedia journalism packages published online from August 2012 to December 2013. We argue that this new wave of literary journalism is characterized by executing literary techniques through multiple media and represents a gateway to linear storytelling in the hypertextual environment of the Web. What’s the difference between a subject and a story? How do you find the narrative line in a mass of information? How do you structure that narrative? When is the first-person appropriate? What is the role of the editor and publication in shaping your story? The arc of the course will trace the process of writing a single narrative piece: finding and pitching story ideas; reporting in depth and at length; outlining and structuring your story; choosing a narrative voice and strategy; crafting leads and “overtures;” and making transitions between your story and its larger contexts. As a group, we’ll also work as editors on one another’s ideas and drafts. And since reading good prose is the best way to learn to write it, we’ll closely read a substantial piece of narrative journalism each week. Moody In an effort to expand and compare results with a 2008 study of newspaper editors, this research asked the following: Do TV assignment editors have similar preferences for writing style in press releases as do their newspaper counterparts, or are they inclined to respond differently, owing to the demands of TV audiences and the characteristics of the broadcast medium? Results of this experiment indicate that TV assignment editors are just as likely as newspaper editors to use all or part of press releases written in either the inverted pyramid style or narrative style. However, the two have mixed opinions as to which writing style produces a more interesting and enjoyable, more informative, clearer and more understandable and more credible press release. The author discusses how public relations students and professionals can benefit from this disparity of response between TV assignment editors and newspaper editors in the acceptance or rejection of news releases based on writing style. The notion that newspaper editors are more likely to choose a press release written in a narrative style over one written in an inverted-pyramid style was mixed at best when viewed from the surface of an experiment conducted in 2008 of newspaper editors across the American heartland. Nonetheless, writing style was seen as having an unquestionable link to an editor’s assessment of certain press release characteristics, such as whether a release was found to be more interesting and enjoyable, more informative, clearer and more understandable and more credible.

That’s what makes good writing great, and what transforms great writers into extraordinary storytellers. One key difference between most creative nonfiction and journalism is that journalists are acutely (and unrelentingly) aware of audience — word for word, paragraph by paragraph, page by page. Latin­­American­­narrative­­journalism­­during­­the­­1950s–1970s­­developed­­for­­very­­ different­­reasons­­from­­the­­Anglo–American­­“New­­Journalism”­­of ­­the­­period. uring a period of approximately twenty years, from about 1955 to D1975, one can detect in Latin and Anglo America two parallel literary journalisms that emerged as powerful and efficient ways to register the vertiginous social, political, and economic transformations taking place on both sides of the Río Grande. Among the more notable authors of such work in the United States have been, of course, Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, and Norman Mailer. Among those in Latin America have been Gabriel García Márquez, Rodolfo Walsh, and Miguel Barnet. Both groups produced some of the most compelling narrative nonfiction in their respective languages, and were in the avant garde of the nonfiction movement worldwide at this time. But even though they all resorted to similar techniques and devices of the kind we associate with literary journalism (scenic construction, full dialogue transcription, and a unified point of view, for example), the political and cultural contexts in which they wrote their stories were very different, which in turn resulted in differences in the nature and scope of their narrative projects. In that vein, the divide between democracy and authoritarianism north and south of the Río Grande can explain some of the narrative and Literary Journalism Studies Vol. 2, No. 2, Fall 2010 64 Literary­­Journalism­­Studies­­ reportorial choices made by these authors who are regarded as among the most representative and distinguished writers of the form.

    PHENOMENOLOGICAL REPRODUCTION in Thompson and Mailer's New Journalism BRENDAN CHAMBERS “The truth is no more nor no less than what one feels at each instant in the perpetual climax of the present.” – Norman Mailer, “The White Negro” n his classicδιανοια essay, “The New Journalism and the Image-World: Two Modes of IOrganizing Experience,” David Eason sought to distance interpretations of New Journalism from what he saw as the facile, superficial description of its resemblance to novelistic writing, and to create a more complex conception of the relationship between style, culture, and consciousness. He argued that the widespread view of New Journalism as literary journalism (particularly as propounded by Tom Wolfe) “abstracts the reports from their cultural contexts [… giving] only passing attention to the experiential contradictions represented in many of the reports.”1 Within his own formulation, Eason proposed instead that we think of two countervailing subdivisions within this body of work, each reflecting a different approach to conceptualizing the relationship of reporter to the cultural fragmentation of the 1960’s and 1970’s.
