ICWL 2015 - Programme Booklet 3 Welcome Message from Conference and Program Co-chairs

Welcome all of you and it is so happy to have you participating ICWL 2015. The annual International Conference on Web-Based Learning (ICWL) started in Hong Kong in 2002 and has so far been held in Asia (Beijing, Hong Kong, Jinhua, Kenting, Penang, Shanghai), Australia (Melbourne), and Europe (Aachen, Edinburgh, Sinaia, Tallinn). This year, the 14th ICWL conference is organized by South China University of Technology, Sun Yat-sen University (China) and the Hong Kong Web Society. The conference is held in Guangzhou, the third largest Chinese city and the capital of province in South China, which owns a large tertiary education complex, housing ten higher education institutions that educate up to 200,000 students. This year we received 79 submissions from 27 countries worldwide. After a rigorous double-blind review process, 18 papers were accepted as full papers, yielding an acceptance rate of 22.8%. In addition, two invited papers and seven short papers were accepted. These contributions covered the latest findings in various areas of Web-based learning. Moreover, ICWL 2015 features two distinguished keynote presentations and workshops, including Go-Lab, KMEL and IWUM, which covered a wide range of active and emerging topics in Web-based learning, complementing the main conference areas. We would like to thank all the authors for their contribution in maintaining a high-quality conference. We count on your continual support for playing a significant role in the Web-based learning community in the future. We would also like to thank all conference participants for spending your precious time to attend the conference and to share your research ideas and experience. And last but not least, we would like to thank the entire Organizing Committee for putting a lot of effort in conference organization matters.

Abstract Advances in Virtual Reality (VR) technologies have led to the emergence of a variety of Virtual Reality based Learning Environments (VRLE). Unlike physical learning environments such as classrooms and laboratories, VRLE is able to provide learning scenarios and interactivities that are not possible or easily created in real world settings, for students to experience in a safe and controlled manner. VRLE when designed appropriately can be an effective learning platform for a variety of pedagogical approaches, such as inquiry-based, collaborative and game-based learning. In this talk, several types of VRLEs and the associated pedagogical design issues will be discussed, and our experience of designing and implementing VR-based training programmes for special education will be highlighted.

The paper “Sparse Representation based Spectral regression” won the Lotfi Zadeh Best Paper Award in 2011 The International Conference on Machine Learning and Cybernetics (ICMLC 2011). Dr. Yu is in charge of or take part in 23 research projects from the government in China, Guangdong province and Guangzhou city, or from the university. He gained the new star award from Guangzhou Chapter of ACM China and CCF in 2014. Please refer to the following homepage for more information: http://www.hgml.cn/yuzhiwen.htm Abstract Different learners have different interests and properties. It raises an interesting issue that which kinds of learning styles, such as distance learning, face-to-face learning and blending learning, are more suitable for the learners, according to the attributes of the learners. The ensemble learning methods provide one of the possible ways to solve this problem. When compared with single learning methods, the ensemble learning methods are able to integrate multiple learning methods into a unified ensemble model that can provide more accurate, stable, and robust final results. In this presentation, we first present different kinds of ensemble learning algorithms, such as classifier ensemble methods, cluster ensemble methods and semi-supervised ensemble methods. Then, several newly proposed ensemble learning methods are proposed, such as hybrid adaptive ensemble learning framework, adaptive noise immune cluster ensemble, probabilistic cluster structure ensemble, and so on. Finally, the applications of the ensemble learning methods, especially in web-based learning, are introduced.
